Your Travel Guide to Dumaguete, Negros Oriental as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dumaguete from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers coming from Manila or other major hubs like Cebu or Davao, flying is the most convenient way to reach Dumaguete. Sibulan Airport (DGT), also known as Dumaguete Airport, serves the city. Major airlines operate regular flights, and depending on your departure city and booking time, fares can range from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip. The flight from Manila typically takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. It's always a good idea to book flight tickets well in advance to snag better deals.

If you prefer a more scenic or budget-friendly journey, land and sea travel is also an option, though significantly longer. From Manila, you can take a bus to various ports in the Bicol region or Mindanao, then catch a ferry to Dumaguete. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Batangas port and then a ferry to Caticlan or Iloilo, followed by another ferry to Dumaguete. Bus fares can vary widely, from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 for longer inter-island routes. This option is best for those with ample time and a desire for a more adventurous travel experience.

For travelers already in the Visayas, ferry services connect Dumaguete to nearby islands like Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor. The ferry from Cebu City to Dumaguete, for instance, takes approximately 4 to 6 hours, with ticket prices typically ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500. These sea routes offer a different perspective of the Philippine archipelago and are a popular choice for island hopping enthusiasts.

Best Time to Visit Dumaguete

Dumaguete enjoys a tropical climate, with generally warm temperatures year-round. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking pleasant weather is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring the city, and visiting nearby islands like Apo Island for diving or snorkeling.

The period between December and February is often considered the most comfortable, with slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity compared to the hotter months of March to May. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially better deals, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or late May.

The wet season, from June to October, brings more frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy. While this might deter some travelers, it also means fewer tourists and lower prices. The rain often comes in short bursts, and you can still enjoy many activities between showers. For divers and snorkelers, the marine life around Dumaguete and nearby islands like Apo Island is spectacular year-round, though visibility can be affected by heavy rains.

Food and Dining Near Dumaguete — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Dumaguete, beyond its "gentle people," is also known for its culinary scene, offering a delightful array of local flavors. A must-try is the *Budbod Kabog*, a local delicacy made from millet seeds, often served with latik (coconut caramel). You can find this sweet treat in local markets and some specialty stores, offering a unique taste of Negros Oriental. It’s a perfect snack to enjoy with a cup of coffee.

Another local specialty that captures the essence of Filipino comfort food is *Kinilaw*. While found throughout the Philippines, Dumaguete's version often features fresh, locally caught fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer or light meal, best enjoyed at local eateries or restaurants near the coast. The tanginess and freshness are truly invigorating, especially on a warm day.

For those with a sweet tooth, *Silvanas* and *Sans Rival* from Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries are legendary. Silvanas are cashew-meringue cookies sandwiched with buttercream and coated in cashew nuts, while Sans Rival is a layered cake with similar components. These desserts are so popular that they are often bought as pasalubong (souvenirs). You can find the original shop easily in Dumaguete.

Don't leave Dumaguete without trying *Sinugba*, which refers to grilled meats and seafood. Many restaurants and roadside stalls offer a variety of options, from pork belly to fish and squid, all grilled to perfection over charcoal. It’s a staple in Filipino gatherings and a satisfying meal, especially when paired with garlic rice and a dipping sauce. Exploring these local dishes offers a delicious way to connect with the culture of Dumaguete.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Dumaguete

Dumaguete is renowned for its friendly and hospitable locals, embodying the "City of Gentle People" moniker. When interacting, a polite greeting like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders and local customs is appreciated. Dress modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas. The city has a relaxed atmosphere, but it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places.

For safety, Dumaguete is generally considered a safe city for tourists. However, like any urban area, it's advisable to take standard precautions: keep your valuables secure, be mindful of your belongings, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. If you need assistance, local police can be reached at emergency numbers, which are usually available through your hotel or local information centers. It’s also a good idea to have the contact details of your embassy or consulate readily accessible.

To enhance your travel experience in Dumaguete and the Philippines, consider downloading a few essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. If you plan on using ride-hailing services or booking local tours, having the Traveloka app is highly recommended, as it allows you to book hotel rooms, flights, and activities seamlessly. Need to train front desk that when a guest ask for the printout of the final bill , they should inform the guest of any bills due at that point . The reason is that they will come out in a few minutes with a full of baggages. Your front desk ran after me when I came out with baggages in the parking lot to ask for remaining chatges … So inefficient.

The staff at CoCo Grande are the best, they treat everyone like family. It’s clean, quiet, and relaxing. It is dated but that gives it character. Traffic would be the only negative factor but that is a problem all over the city of Dumaguete.

The price was good. The beer in the mini fridge was cold. Bed was comfortable, room was spacious. AC was cold. Had an extra twin bed. Breakfast was full on American. Service was nice and efficient.

Staff were very nice and accommodating! Had I known that this is the sister hotel of Coco Grove Hotel in Siquijor than I would have booked at Coco Grove instead of the horrible Resort Deja Vu in Siquijor.

The staff at CoCo Grande are the best, they treat everyone like family. It’s clean, quiet, and relaxing. It is dated but that gives it character. Traffic would be the only negative factor but that is a problem all over the city of Dumaguete.

Hotel is so outdated. Needs a renovation. Smell is really bad, window curtains smells terrible. Lobby and spa smells mold.. only the good thing is the staff is really accomodating and friendly. Staff is only the positive thing in that building. Nothing else.
