After being to the Philippines 10 times you expect to settle on many aspects of accomodations unless you stay in Makati, Manila. Not so.much with my stay here. Upon my arrival I was met with a very pleasant staff. They made sure i was happy with my room (I selected thw two twin bed room as I was traveling alone) and they informed me of the hotel policies and amenities. There is no pool but I was not there to swim so that was fine. Breakfast was included and they chexked with me the night before for slelection but there are other food choices if you decided to dine elsewhere. ANY newd I had or concern, which there were few, were immediately addressed and accomodated. After staying in my share of hotels, THIS is thebone I will revisit the next time I am in General Santos City, Philippines. This hotel is located.within a block of the citt center park which is a great place to walk or jog, especially at night. It is totally safe, as is the hotel. Being from Dallas, Inwas surprised to see that literally feet from the hotel, there is an authentic Texas Barbecue eatery with smokers and all. All in all, thisnwas well worth my money and I was very comfortable here.

Your Travel Guide to General Santos as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to General Santos from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach General Santos City from Manila and other major Luzon cities is by air. General Santos International Airport (GES) serves the region, with regular flights connecting it to the capital. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate these routes. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 40 minutes to 2 hours. Fares can vary significantly based on booking time and season, but budget-conscious travelers can often find deals for around PHP 3,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip if booked in advance. To secure the best prices, it's wise to book flight tickets well ahead of your travel dates.

For those traveling from Visayas or other parts of Mindanao, flying into General Santos is also the quickest option. Cities like Cebu and Davao have direct or connecting flights. If you are coming from areas not directly served, you might need to transit through Manila or another major hub. Always compare flight options to find the most efficient route for your journey.

Traveling by land is a more time-consuming but potentially more economical option for those coming from nearby Mindanao provinces. Buses operate from various cities like Davao, Cotabato, and Cagayan de Oro to General Santos City. The journey can take anywhere from 4 to 10 hours or more, depending on the origin city and road conditions. Bus fares are considerably lower than flights, typically ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 for a one-way ticket. This option is best suited for travelers who have ample time and prefer to see the landscapes along the way.

Best Time to Visit General Santos

General Santos City enjoys a tropical climate, characterized by warm temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The city does not experience a distinct cold season, making it a year-round destination. However, there are periods that are generally more favorable for visiting. The dry season, typically from March to May, offers the most sunshine and the least amount of rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions.

The rest of the year, from June to February, falls within the wet season, with intermittent rain showers. While you might encounter some rain, it usually doesn't disrupt travel plans significantly, as showers are often brief. This period can also be advantageous for budget-conscious travelers, as accommodation prices might be slightly lower during the off-peak months. Regardless of when you choose to visit, always pack light clothing, sunscreen, and an umbrella for unpredictable weather.

Food and Dining Near General Santos — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

General Santos City is renowned for its fresh seafood, especially tuna. A must-try dish is the grilled tuna belly, known for its rich, succulent flavor and slightly fatty texture. You can find excellent versions of this at local eateries and restaurants, often served with soy sauce, calamansi, and chili. It’s a true taste of the city’s maritime bounty.

Another local specialty that reflects Mindanao’s culinary influences is Sinuglaw. This dish is a delicious combination of grilled pork (lechon kawali) and raw fish (kinilaw), marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and spices. The interplay of textures and the tangy, savory flavors make it a unique and satisfying meal that showcases the region's distinct palate.

For those who enjoy spicy food, try the local version of La Paz Batchoy. While originating from Iloilo, General Santos has its own take on this hearty noodle soup, often incorporating local ingredients and a robust broth. It’s a comforting and flavorful dish, perfect for a filling meal, especially on a cooler evening.

Don't leave General Santos without sampling some of the local fruits. The region is known for its sweet mangoes, papayas, and bananas. You can find these fresh at local markets or enjoy them as part of desserts and juices. Exploring the local markets is also a great way to discover other regional delicacies and snacks that offer a genuine taste of Filipino flavors.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for General Santos

General Santos City is a melting pot of cultures, with a significant population of migrants from various parts of the Philippines, alongside indigenous communities. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality, and visitors are often welcomed warmly. It's respectful to greet locals politely and be mindful of local customs, especially when visiting religious sites or interacting with elders.

When it comes to safety, General Santos City is generally considered safe for tourists, especially in well-trafficked areas. However, like any urban center, it's wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying expensive items openly, and keep your valuables secure. Stick to well-lit areas at night and use reputable transportation services. In case of emergencies, local police hotlines are available.

For seamless travel, having a few essential apps on your smartphone can be very helpful. Ride-hailing apps can be useful for getting around the city, though their availability might vary. Navigation apps like Google Maps are indispensable for finding your way around. For communication, ensure you have a reliable local SIM card or an international roaming plan.

It's also beneficial to have the Traveloka app installed on your phone. This allows you to easily manage your bookings, search for accommodations, and discover local attractions and activities. Overall is good. You get what you pay. Very well located super-downtown close to main park dedicated to Gen. Paulino Santos , OLPGV Catholic church, malls and nice restaurants. Area is safe at night. Pros: staff is kind and helpful, the Filipino breakfast they serve is good, rooms (and the whole building) are new and well kept. All spaces are clean. Furthermore undoubtedly they offer a very reasonable price. Cons: WiFi is often not working, and when is working you have to login every time you access. They don’t make the bed or change towels daily, you need to remind them. The rooms lack a safe, so you have to deposit your valuables at the front desk.

The property was ok and the staff very friendly... my issue was the loud music and thumping bass that shook our room into the early morning hours...

The free breakfast for Muslims guests children are not palatable to their taste since the hotel has mixed vegetable sauteed in butter and vegetable omelet only for the guest's preference since no other alternative was offered.

Would love to go back on this hotel someday. Affordable price, excellent staff and very friendly and family oriented people. Location wise, its in the heart of the city so it's easy access anywhere you go. I'm very satisified during my stay. Delicious breakfast every morning. I also enjoy my hot and cold shower so diffinitly will going to recommend this hotel to friends and family!❤️
