Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common and efficient method. Major airlines operate frequent flights from key cities like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Palawan to Manila. You can often find competitive fares by booking flight tickets in advance, especially if you are flexible with your travel dates.

From NAIA, reaching Makati is straightforward. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available at the airport terminals, offering direct transport to your accommodation. The journey typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes, depending heavily on traffic conditions. For a more budget-friendly option, you can take an airport bus or a combination of LRT/MRT trains and jeepneys, though this requires more navigation.

If you are traveling from Luzon but not directly to Manila, bus services are extensive. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from various provinces. Once you arrive at a Manila bus terminal, you can then transfer to local transport like jeepneys, buses, or the MRT/LRT to reach Makati. Planning your route in advance using navigation apps can significantly ease your journey.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, typically from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather for exploring. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for walking around the city, visiting outdoor attractions, and enjoying al fresco dining.

The wet season runs from May to October. While this period brings frequent rainfall, it doesn't usually mean continuous downpours. Showers are often heavy but short-lived, typically occurring in the afternoon. Traveling during the wet season can mean fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, offering a different kind of appeal for budget-conscious Filipino travelers.

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the cooler months of the dry season, from November to February. This period coincides with festive celebrations and offers a comfortable climate for all your city explorations. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Makati's indoor attractions and extensive public transport ensure you can enjoy your trip year-round.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary heritage, and Makati offers a fantastic platform to explore these flavors. A must-try is **Adobo**, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, slow-cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, its savory and tangy profile is deeply satisfying. You'll find excellent versions in many local eateries and even upscale restaurants.

Another Filipino favorite is **Sinigang**, a sour soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with tamarind broth. It’s often prepared with pork, shrimp, or fish, along with an assortment of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The comforting, tangy broth is perfect for a hearty meal, especially on a cooler evening. Look for restaurants that offer authentic home-style versions.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, **Lechon** (roasted pig) is an absolute delight, though often reserved for special occasions. However, you can find delicious **Lechon Kawali** (crispy fried pork belly) or **Crispy Pata** (deep-fried pork knuckle) in many Filipino restaurants, offering a satisfying crunch and rich flavor. These dishes are best enjoyed with a side of rice and a dipping sauce.

Don't leave without trying **Lumpia**, Filipino spring rolls. They come in various fillings, from fresh vegetables (lumpiang sariwa) to savory minced meat and vegetables (lumpiang shanghai), often served fried until golden brown and crispy. They make for a perfect appetizer or snack, easily found in casual dining spots and food stalls across Makati.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Makati, a friendly demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to show respect to elders and use polite terms like "po" and "opo" when speaking. While Makati is generally safe, especially in commercial areas, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded places.

Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For transportation, stick to reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is 117. Familiarizing yourself with basic Filipino phrases can also enhance your interactions and show appreciation for the local culture.

For navigating Makati and the wider Metro Manila area, several apps are indispensable for Filipino travelers. **Waze** or **Google Maps** are essential for real-time traffic updates and navigation, crucial for planning your journeys. **Grab** is the go-to app for ride-sharing, food delivery, and even grocery shopping, offering convenience and transparent pricing.

Consider downloading a translation app if you're not fluent in Tagalog or other local dialects, although English is widely spoken in Makati. For managing your finances, mobile banking apps like **GCash** or **Maya** are incredibly useful for cashless transactions, paying bills, and sending money. Having these apps installed will make your travel experience smoother and more convenient.

The place is already old. You can see the rust on different sides of your room, especially in the comfort room. The toilet flush and the shower are not working properly. The aircon is noisy and very old, it's not too cold anymore. All in all, the place lacks maintenance. When we arrived, the attendant was able to open the wrong room with someone inside because he didn't read the room number that was supposed to be ours. Can you imagine if someone just suddenly opened your door?
