Your Travel Guide to Coron as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Coron from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Coron from Manila and other major Philippine cities like Cebu is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Busuanga Airport (USU), the gateway to Coron. Flights from Manila typically take around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for around PHP 3,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip if you book flight deals early.

For travelers looking for more economical options, or those coming from nearby islands in Palawan, ferry services are available, though they are less common for direct travel from Luzon. These sea routes can take considerably longer, often spanning several hours or even overnight. Bus travel is not a direct option to Coron itself, as it is an island municipality. Travelers usually need to fly or take a ferry to reach the area.

Once you land at Busuanga Airport, shared van transfers are the standard and most practical mode of transport to Coron Town Proper, where Coron Gateway Hotel & Suites is located. These vans typically cost between PHP 150 to PHP 250 per person and the journey takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Booking your flights in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak seasons, to secure the best prices and ensure availability.

Best Time to Visit Coron

The ideal time to visit Coron for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and lower chances of rainfall, making it perfect for island hopping tours, diving, and exploring the famous lagoons and lakes. The weather is consistently pleasant, offering the best conditions for outdoor activities that Coron is known for.

The peak tourist season typically falls between December and April, coinciding with school holidays and the most favorable weather. During this period, expect higher prices for flights and accommodation, and more crowds at popular attractions. For those seeking a more relaxed experience and potentially lower costs, the shoulder months of November and May can be excellent choices, offering good weather with fewer tourists. The wet season, from June to October, can bring heavy rains and rough seas, which may disrupt travel plans and limit access to certain areas.

For a taste of local snacks, try *Taho*, a sweet snack made of silken tofu, arnibal (brown sugar syrup), and sago pearls, often sold by vendors in the morning. For a more substantial meal, look for *Crispy Pata*, deep-fried pork leg, a popular Filipino comfort food. These dishes are readily available in many local restaurants and are sure to satisfy your palate.

Quite an old property, there were towels down in the public areas as it leaked when it rained. Felt like the floors had never been cleaned (very very dusty), and there were also "soft spots" in the floor that felt like we might fall through at any moment. Staff were very helpful, and the building location right by where the island tours depart was convenient, but didn't make up for the rundown nature of the building overall. The provided wifi didn't reach our room either.

There were rats in our room. While I was in the bathroom a rat ran along the bottom of the door, up the side of door, and into the roof. There wasn’t any running water between 2am and 6am. The door chain was broken. The bath was filthy. The people running this hotel know about the rats, it was not a surprise to them.

Place is outdated, not well-maintained by management, although staff and service were nice. It wasn’t worth being charged $55 for a 3rd guest in a room with 2 queen beds for $55 a night for 3 nights. Booked this place coz it’s conveniently next to the port but should’ve looked somewhere else.

This hotel was awful. Bedsheet dirty (with stains), towels were very dirty and full of holes. Bathroom was not fully constructed, missing tiles, broken parts.. etc I am very disappointed that expedia give this hotel such a high rating when it is not even close. I travel quite a lot to different parts of the world and I know what to expect more or less but this hotel has been terrible. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel and the stars should be just 2. Only good thing was the location. Not sure if will keep buying my trips trough expedia.. I have photos for proof if needed.

The room and the bathroom were very spacious. Provided water, towels, toothbrush, comb, soap, shampoo, in-room slippers, coffee, kettle and ref. Location: walking distance to different restaurants, pasalubong shops, tour agencies and motorcycle rentals. Cable TV provided, but not so clear, lines all over were present. WiFi provided, but slow. Good for browsing FB, but not for playing Netflix. Electricity was going on and off at night, but didn't bother me so much. I think this is the case in Palawan. Water - heater was not that strong. It was already in the maximum but can't really feel the hotness of the water in the shower. Housekeeping - not automatic. You have to tell them if you want your room to be cleaned and they will. Staff - they were very friendly, cheerful and helpful. This is what I liked most during my stay.

Coron Gateway was a great choice for island hopping and diving activities in Coron. Though the suites are a little dated and the hotel doesn't have a restaurant on-site, service was friendly and helpful. Location is very close to the pier and local market. Walkable distance to many great restaurants. Suites are very roomy, spacious, modern.

Even if it is in a good position, near the departure of tours, but they haven’t got any maps or they couldn’t give you any information about what we can find in the neighborhood. There are too many ants and they ask us 1000 pesos per night for an additional single bed that is actually a mattress on the floor??? It makes hard to stay there with children. We didn’t take a shower for two days because at first there wasn’t hot water then there wasn’t water at all. We had problem with wc discharge during all the stay. Most of towels are overused. WiFi doesn’t work in rooms and for two days it didn’t work at all. Our room was very nice, but if you can’t have basic service it’s useless. Breakfast is not included. Really bad accommodation compare with the price

The pluses: Great location right next to all of the boat launches, convenient to everything if you want to walk the town, very helpful and accommodating staff with great attitude and desire to help. The minuses: old building in desperate need of upgrade all around, wifi almost never works, low water pressure but that's the case all over coron, daily brownouts when it rains. The rest of the story: a cyclone hit the area and all flights and ships were canceled so a sudden and unexpected stay extension became necessary. Coron Gateway Hotel & Suites jacked their prices by more than double even for their long-stay customers, while other area hotels did not. I can understand supply/demand but this was a shameless and outright FU squeeze. Would I stay again: not as a first choice. If nothing else was available I would choose Coron Gateway over a tent. There are other more comfortable options around Coron City.

This hotel was right on the water, which meant that it was perfect if you were doing island hopping! Staff were very friendly and helpful. The only issue we found was that the rooms had some stains on the carpet and bed sheets. But that was the only negative really! Would recommend.

I love the location of this hotel, which is the near the port, and it is surrounded by many small stores and eateries. I have stayed in this hotel when it was very new and stayed several more when I come to Coron. My memories about it stayed with me. The rooms were relatively large and commodious.

The hotel’s electric power is on and off. No air conditioner. The hotel rooms need upgrading. The hotel personnels are very professional, polite and very accommodating. They were able to transfer us to a smaller hotel.

This hotel is located in a perfect location. The staff was very nice and we were able to check in right when we arrived at 10am which was nice. The rooms are very spacious and the WiFi worked perfectly. Overall a great place to stay in Coron

Booked for three days, checked in the first room and it smelled really bad. Moved to another room, same thing! It was late in the day, so we checked out the next day. This hotel has potential if management will just fix the place!
