Your Travel Guide to Coron as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Coron from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers planning a trip to Coron, the most practical and time-efficient route is by air. The primary gateway is Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) on Busuanga Island, which serves Coron. From Manila, several airlines operate direct flights to Coron, including Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines. Flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect to pay anywhere from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 or more for a round trip if booked in advance during off-peak times, and potentially higher during peak seasons. Booking your book flight well in advance is crucial for securing the best prices.

If you are coming from other major hubs like Cebu or Davao, you will likely need to take a connecting flight via Manila, although occasional direct flights might be available depending on the airline's schedule. The journey from Cebu or Davao will naturally take longer due to the layover. Alternatively, some travelers opt for a more adventurous and budget-friendly route involving ferries, though this is significantly more time-consuming and less common for reaching Coron directly from Luzon or Mindanao.

For instance, one could travel by bus from Manila to various ports in Quezon or Batangas, then take a ferry to Palawan (Puerto Princesa or El Nido), and subsequently arrange land and sea transfers to Coron. This multi-leg journey can take upwards of 24-48 hours and is generally not recommended unless you have ample time and are seeking a very specific travel experience.

For those who prefer land travel as much as possible before the final sea leg, you can take a bus from major terminals in Metro Manila (like Cubao or Pasay) to El Nido or Puerto Princesa in Palawan. Bus companies like Cagsawa Travel and Jac Liner offer routes. The bus journey to Batangas port for the ferry to Palawan can take around 2-3 hours, with bus fares ranging from PHP 200-300.

The subsequent ferry trip to Palawan is a long one, often overnight, and then you would need another bus or van transfer to Coron. This entire process is lengthy and requires careful planning. Given the convenience and time savings, flying directly to Coron is the preferred method for the vast majority of Filipino travelers.

Best Time to Visit Coron

Coron, like much of Palawan, experiences a tropical climate, which can be broadly divided into two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season typically runs from November to May, and this is generally considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and lower humidity, making it ideal for island hopping, swimming, snorkeling, and diving.

The months of December to February are particularly pleasant, with cooler temperatures and minimal rainfall. This period is perfect for those who want to maximize their outdoor activities and enjoy the pristine beaches and lagoons without the interruption of rain.

The wet season, on the other hand, usually spans from June to October. During this time, rainfall is more frequent, and typhoons can occur, although they are more common in the northern parts of the Philippines. While the wet season might bring occasional downpours, it doesn't necessarily mean continuous rain. There can still be plenty of sunny days, and the advantage of traveling during this period is that there are fewer crowds and accommodation prices might be lower.

For travelers who are flexible with their dates and don't mind the possibility of occasional rain, the wet season can offer a more relaxed and budget-friendly experience. However, it's crucial to monitor weather forecasts closely if you plan to visit during these months, as sea conditions can sometimes affect boat tours.

For the best overall experience, aiming for the shoulder months of the dry season, such as November or May, can be a good strategy. You can often enjoy favorable weather conditions similar to the peak season but with fewer tourists and potentially better rates. Ultimately, the "best" time to visit depends on your priorities. If guaranteed sunshine and calm waters for all your planned activities are paramount, then the dry season from November to May is your best bet.

If you are a budget-conscious traveler or prefer a more laid-back atmosphere and don't mind a bit of unpredictable weather, the wet season can still offer a rewarding trip.

Food and Dining Near Coron — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Coron's culinary scene is a delightful reflection of its coastal location and Filipino heritage, offering fresh seafood and local flavors that are sure to please any palate. One dish you absolutely must try is the **Kinilaw**, the Filipino version of ceviche. Freshly caught raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is "cooked" in vinegar (often coconut vinegar), mixed with onions, ginger, chili peppers, and sometimes calamansi juice. The tangy, spicy, and refreshing flavors are perfect for the tropical climate.

You'll find excellent kinilaw in most local restaurants and even in some carinderias around Coron Town Proper. Look for places that serve it fresh, as the quality of the fish is paramount.

Another seafood delicacy that is a staple in Coron is **Grilled Tuna**. Given Coron's proximity to rich fishing grounds, the tuna here is exceptionally fresh. Whether it's a simple grilled tuna belly, a whole grilled tuna, or tuna steaks, the smoky char and succulent texture are a treat. Many restaurants offer this, often served with a side of soy sauce, calamansi, and chili, or with a tomato and onion salsa.

For an authentic experience, seek out local eateries that grill their catch daily. The taste of freshly grilled tuna, perhaps enjoyed with a side of garlic rice and a cold San Miguel beer, is a characteristic Coron dining experience.

Don't leave Coron without trying **La Paz Batchoy**, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular throughout the Philippines. While not exclusive to Coron, a warm bowl of La Paz Batchoy, with its rich pork and shrimp broth, tender noodles, and generous toppings of pork cracklings, chicharon, and vegetables, is incredibly comforting, especially after a day of exploring. You can find good renditions in local eateries and markets.

It’s a flavorful and filling dish that offers a taste of Filipino comfort food.

For those looking for something a bit more adventurous, **Tamilok** is a unique local delicacy found in Palawan. These are woodworms that are harvested from mangrove trees and are typically eaten raw, dipped in vinegar with garlic and chili. They have a slimy texture and a briny, slightly sweet taste, often described as tasting like oysters. While it might sound unusual, trying Tamilok is a true local experience for the daring foodie.

You might find it offered in some specialized restaurants or by locals who can procure it.

Finally, no Filipino dining experience is complete without enjoying fresh **Lato** or sea grapes. These are a type of seaweed that looks like tiny green grapes and has a unique, slightly salty, and popping texture when you bite into them. Lato is usually served as a salad, often with tomatoes, onions, and a simple vinaigrette or calamansi dressing. It's incredibly refreshing and a great accompaniment to grilled seafood.

You can find fresh lato at local markets or as a side dish in many seafood restaurants.

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay in Coron Hilltop View Resort. The staff were all nice and extra helpful. The food was great and the pool was really clean. We enjoyed dipping the water after going around coron.

The hotel’s location is a little bit far from coron town proper, you have to ride a tricycle at 25/head/way to be able to go to town. Our accommodation is nice but you have to climb about 25 stairs to be able to go to your villa. Slow to zero wifi and 3G connection on the villa. Slow wifi in the reception area. We booked a 3 nights stay, for the first two mornings there was a buffet breakfast served but on the third morning only set breakfast was given. Their kitchen/food attendant staff were very grumpy, they don't even smile on guests, no initiative in refilling food on the buffet, you have to ask then to refill each item you like. One time the food they served even had flying insect on it, I just called the attention of the attendant, I removed the chicken with the fly but the attendant didn't even bothered to replace the whole batch. I won't stay here again, and will not recommend it to my friends/families.

Staff are accommodating esp Ms. Eve from front desk. The room is huge ac is working. However there are no complimentary bottled waters inside the room and there’s no signal in the hotel maybe of its location and there’s no wifi which is stated upon booking. Buffet Breakfast is ordinary I hope they would improve their menu. If you want peace and quiet away from town I recommend this place.

This hotel is perfect for relaxation, a bit away from the busy and noisy town proper, walking distance to Mt. Tapyas. All of their staffs and operations manager, James is very accommodating. They fix our tours and tricycle ride without extra charge. They also serve superb food in their hotel restaurant. All in all I'm very satisfied staying here, and we'll definitely book again to this hotel.
