What Guests Say About Their Stay

Resort was beautiful. Everything was new, in excellent condition and very clean. Rooms were spacious and very clean. Staff were extra friendly and helpful. Food was good but menu was a little limited. Activities for an extended stay were a little limited; pool, massage and surfing (which is not going to be for everyone). Could use more activities both on resort and off resort. For example, a pre-arranged car that could be hired to see local sites like Aliwagwag falls, or for a trip into Cateel. There was nowhere within walking distance to go for shopping etc. Maybe some playing cards or board games that could be borrowed for playing around the pool? Wifi was okay but a little unstable and since the TV only had streaming and used the Wifi, we couldn't really watch TV. Resorts just opened in 2023, so a few growing pains perhaps. The above comments should be easy to address. Overall I would go back.

Stayed with family and extended family for 2 nights. Excellent customer service, great pool with loungers in the pool. Food of a good standard with a decent breakfast. Actually managed to get a strawberry milkshake, as good as any you will find in the UK, and the wife said the Halo-Halo was one of the best she had ever had. We stayed in a 2 bedroom chalet, which was airy, with a fridge and coffee making facilities (no tea, though being from the UK, I travel with my PG Tips anyway. Beds were comfortable and clean, as you would expect from a decent resort such as this one.

This beach front property was great. The staff was all friendly and accommodating. The manager was very nice and ensured that our stay was satisfactory. When the staff was not attending to guests needs, they were all focused on the cleanliness of the property. The pool has a kids area that is connected to the 4ft side of the pool for everyone to enjoy. The food was great. I would recommend the chocolate shake and pasta. Every need that our group had was addressed in a quick and satisfactory way.

Your Travel Guide to Cateel as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cateel from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Reaching Cateel from Manila or other major Philippine cities primarily involves flying into Davao City (DVO), the closest major airport. Numerous airlines operate daily flights to Davao City from Manila, Cebu, and other key urban centers. The cost of flight tickets can vary significantly depending on the season, how far in advance you book, and the airline. To secure the best fares, it's recommended to book your book flight tickets well in advance, especially during peak travel periods.

From Davao City, the journey to Cateel is predominantly by land. Buses and vans are the most common modes of transport. The trip can take approximately 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic conditions and the number of stops. Bus fares are generally budget-friendly, making it a popular choice for many Filipino travelers. You can find terminals in Davao City that serve routes going to Cateel. It's wise to check the latest schedules and fare rates directly with the bus companies or at the terminal.

For those who prefer more comfort or are traveling in a group, hiring a private car or van from Davao City is an option, though it will be more expensive. This offers greater flexibility in terms of departure time and stops along the way. The scenic route through Davao Oriental is part of the adventure, showcasing the diverse landscapes of the region. Planning your transportation in advance is key to a smooth journey to Cateel.

Best Time to Visit Cateel

Cateel, like much of Mindanao, experiences a tropical climate. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking pleasant weather is generally during the dry season, which typically runs from March to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities, beach enjoyment, and exploring natural attractions like waterfalls. The temperatures are warm, typical of a tropical climate, so light clothing and sun protection are essential.

The wet season, which usually spans from June to February, can bring more frequent rainfall. While this doesn't mean constant rain, there can be periods of heavy downpours, especially during typhoons that may affect the eastern seaboard of the Philippines. However, the rainy season also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, which can be appealing for budget-conscious travelers. If you don't mind occasional rain showers and are looking for a more tranquil experience, visiting during the shoulder months or even the wet season can still be rewarding.

Ultimately, the "best" time to visit Cateel depends on your personal preferences and priorities. If maximizing outdoor time and beach activities is key, aim for the dry months. If you prefer fewer tourists and are prepared for potential rain, the other months can offer a different, yet equally enjoyable, experience of Cateel's natural beauty.

Food and Dining Near Cateel — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When visiting Cateel, embracing the local culinary scene is a must for any Filipino traveler. Davao Oriental, and Cateel in particular, offers a taste of fresh, regional flavors. Seafood is a prominent feature due to its coastal location. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid, often seasoned simply to highlight their freshness, are readily available in local eateries and resorts. Look for dishes like *sinugba* (grilled) or *kinilaw* (Filipino ceviche) prepared with local catches.

Another local specialty you might encounter is *La Paz Batchoy*, a hearty noodle soup with pork and vegetables, though its origins are in Iloilo, it's a popular comfort food across the Philippines and can be found in many local carinderias. For those with a sweet tooth, try local delicacies made from fruits abundant in the region, such as mangoes or bananas. Freshly squeezed fruit juices are also a refreshing option, perfect for the tropical climate.

Exploring local markets and small eateries (*carinderias*) will give you the most authentic taste of Cateel. Don't be afraid to ask locals for recommendations on where to find the best *bulalo* (beef shank soup) or other regional favorites. Trying these local dishes is an integral part of the travel experience, offering a delicious insight into the culture and lifestyle of Davao Oriental.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cateel

The people of Cateel, like most Filipinos, are known for their hospitality and warmth. Engaging with locals respectfully is key to a richer travel experience. Learning a few basic phrases in Tagalog or the local dialect can go a long way. When visiting local communities or interacting with residents, always be polite and mindful of local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites or more conservative areas.

Safety in Cateel is generally comparable to other parts of the Philippines. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places or when traveling at night. Secure your valuables and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's also advisable to inform someone of your travel itinerary. In case of emergencies, know the local emergency numbers, which can usually be obtained from your accommodation or local authorities.

For essential travel needs, having a few key apps on your smartphone can be very helpful. Navigation apps like Google Maps are indispensable for getting around.

I booked the hotel and I thought the room is really good for 6 person, because it’s the one that showed in the picture of 4 bed but when we arrived I was surprised that it has only two bed,I am discouraged because it should be for 6 person, the person should have a comfortable bed and not the small bed beside it.And also the pool has broken tiles and my niece 9 years old has cut on her finger.my sister in law said they had Christmas Party in the same resort and also one of her colleagues kid got hurt also, they should put precaution on it because it a kiddie pool side. I thought this hotel would give a high standard because we are paying higher amount, same with other five star resort & hotels

Clean and beautiful place and a great food with good service and friendly staff. Just to far from the city.
