Your Travel Guide to Baler as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baler from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

From Metro Manila, the most common way to reach Baler is by bus. Several bus companies, such as Genesis Transport, operate daily trips from terminals in Cubao, Quezon City, and Pasay City. The journey typically takes around 5 to 6 hours, with fares ranging from PHP 500 to PHP 800, depending on the bus type (e.g., executive class with fewer stops). Booking your bus tickets in advance is recommended, especially during peak seasons.

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities, the most efficient route is usually to first travel to Manila or Clark International Airport (CRK). From there, you can connect to bus services heading to Baler. If you are flying into Clark, you might need to take a shuttle or bus to a major terminal in Metro Manila before boarding a bus to Baler. Consider using the book flight service on Traveloka to find convenient flights to Manila or Clark.

Driving your own vehicle is another option, offering more flexibility. The main route from Manila involves taking the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), then connecting to provincial roads leading to Aurora. The total travel time is similar to taking a bus, but you'll have the freedom to make stops along the way. Be prepared for toll fees, which can add to the overall cost of your trip.

Best Time to Visit Baler

The ideal time to visit Baler for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with less rainfall, making it perfect for outdoor activities like surfing, swimming, and exploring the town's attractions. The months of March to May are particularly pleasant, offering warm temperatures and calm seas, though surfing conditions might be less consistent for advanced riders.

The surfing season in Baler is most active from October to March, when the northeast monsoon brings consistent swells to Sabang Beach. This period attracts surfers from all over the country and even internationally. However, be aware that the weather can be unpredictable during these months, with occasional rains and strong winds. If your primary goal is surfing, this is the time to go, but be prepared for varying weather conditions.

For those who prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation rates, the shoulder months of June and September to October can be good options. While these months fall within the wet season, the rain is often intermittent, and you can still enjoy many of Baler's offerings. It’s a trade-off between weather certainty and crowd levels.

Food and Dining Near Baler — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Baler, you absolutely must try the local specialty,

Pinangat

. This dish features taro leaves (gabi) cooked in coconut milk with fish or shrimp, often seasoned with chili and other spices. It’s a creamy, savory delight that showcases the region's fresh ingredients and culinary traditions. Many local eateries and restaurants in Baler serve this authentic dish.

Another local favorite is

Suman sa Lihiya

, a type of rice cake made from glutinous rice and coconut milk, often wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. It's a popular breakfast or snack item, best enjoyed with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee. You can find vendors selling fresh suman, especially in the morning markets.

Seafood is, of course, abundant and fresh in Baler. Grilled fish, squid, and prawns are common offerings at many beachfront restaurants. Don't miss the chance to try

Kinilaw

, the Filipino version of ceviche, where raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing and zesty dish perfect for the tropical climate.

For a taste of something sweet, look for local delicacies like

Buko Pie

or other pastries made with fresh coconut. While not exclusively from Baler, you can often find delicious homemade versions. Exploring the local markets and small eateries will lead you to these culinary treasures. For a convenient dining experience, the restaurant at Costa Pacifica offers a selection of dishes, and you can also find numerous local carinderias and restaurants around Sabang Beach.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baler

Baler is known for its friendly and laid-back culture. The locals are generally welcoming to visitors. It's polite to greet people with a smile and use respectful language. When visiting churches or other religious sites, dress modestly out of respect. Tipping is not customary but always appreciated for exceptional service.

Safety in Baler is generally good, especially in tourist areas like Sabang Beach. However, as with any travel destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas. If you plan to surf, always heed the advice of local surf instructors regarding wave conditions and safety.

For emergencies, the local police can be reached at (042) 415-1000. It's also a good idea to have the hotel's contact number readily available. Ensure you have a reliable mobile signal; most major Philippine networks work in Baler, though coverage can be spotty in more remote areas.

To enhance your trip, consider downloading a few useful apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is essential for navigation. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used. If you're interested in learning more about the Philippines, a translation app can be helpful, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. Having a ride-hailing app might be less useful in Baler as tricycles are the primary transport, but local booking apps for activities could be beneficial.

Though Costa Pacifica maintains to be still the most “luxurious” resort in Baler, the maintenance did not bode well during our stay. For starters, the floor was still wet when we got to our room, a Junior Suite. The edges around the bed had a brownish stain. The sheets on the bed were crusty. The pillow case had few stains on it, too and the sofa seat was just plain disgusting that I wouldn’t even place my clothes there. There were also no room slippers provided. There was also no separating door—just a screen— between the toilet and the shower, so when you shower, it floods the floor. The airconditioner unit was cold but was leaking. Also had only few breakfast viants in the morning. Just longanissa and some fish. Previously in the past, they were serving tapa, tocino or even corned beef. The quality dialed down definitely. Good part was the impeccable service. We were checked in immediately. There were complimentary goods for us when we got there. There was a small refrigerator and complimentary drinks. The pool was still cute. There were free surfing lessons included in the package as well. There are still lots of improvement and updating that could happen but still would go back to Costa Pacifica, hoping to get better experience next time.

My husband treated me to a 3-day 2-night stay at this resort. When I found out how much he paid for the trip, I thought it is quite pricey considering the kind of service we got and the lack of cleanliness of the room. We stayed in an ocean-view room on the first floor. The room was priced at Php 9k/night with breakfast. There’s a sofa with filthy cover (see photo). The sheets smelled bad as if it wasn’t properly dried (kulob smell). We’ve asked twice to be transferred to a different room but the other building is undergoing construction. The room is spacious but pretty standard-looking. The minibar was free but it was not refilled on our second night. Coffeemaker wasn't working. I had to manually filter the coffee. The front desk officer when we checked in seemed too tired to offer information about our accommodation. I didn't know we had free surfing lessons; I had to ask later on for it and only then was I informed that we need to get a voucher for it. It was also through a Google search when I found out that Dicasalarin cove can be visited by Costa guests at a discounted rate (they own the cove!). I, later on, found out that my husband asked the reservation people if they can do something special for my birthday. Nothing came, not even a slice of cake waiting in our room (hahah!). Costa Pacifica boasts itself of the most luxurious accommodation in Baler. We’ve experienced luxury in other resorts (with the same rate) and what we had in Costa is far from being luxurious.

I think the resort is over-priced and over-rated. Breakfast selection is not fantastic. Very few waiters seem to be around to assist. Pool is not very well-maintained with broken flooring. Garden surrounding the pool has too many trash.

The place is great. The breakfast was awesome. However, the casitas are far from the main resort and you would need a shuttle to go there. Our night activity has been delayed because the lock of the glass doors are broken. It took them a long time to send someone out and just made a temp fix, and asked him to come back after 2hrs since we need to go already. We went out but worried about our things. The repair guy did not come back and when I told it to the reception, they are more concerned of other things than my concern. So, that's not a good experience from a highly rated resort. We enjoyed more when we transferred to a nearby resort because all our concerns are taken cared of especially I have a 6-month old baby.

Awesome experience, breakfast is great. Had our massage and totally gave us a good night sleep. Just the shower area the floor is slippery not a child friendly.

So far, the best resort hotel, I had been. No complaints at all. Very nice accommodation, great food, excellent staff, nice view, nice location, and a very nice pool. Everything is perfect. Great job and will be going back here definitely.

We should have stayed longer. One remark only is we were not informed beforehand that we could use our senior cards, there were 3 of us, and Front Desk said that my credit card was swiped already. Not very helpful though but our stay was great and we hope to be back again.
