I paid for the Executive Suite (Matrimonial Bed) ahead of time already. And during check-in, they couldn't find my reservation. It took at least 45 minutes to look for the reservation. Even if it was under my name. It was very frustrating. And the staff was just inconsiderate.

Your Travel Guide to Cagayan de Oro City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cagayan de Oro City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila and other major hubs like Cebu or Davao, flying is the most practical and time-efficient method to reach Cagayan de Oro City. Laguindingan Airport (CGY) serves the region. Major Philippine carriers like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate regular flights. From Manila, expect flight durations of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on booking time and season, but booking in advance through platforms like Traveloka can help you secure better rates, potentially ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip.

While flights are the quickest, bus travel is a more budget-friendly option for those coming from nearby Mindanao cities or willing to undertake a longer journey. Buses depart from various terminals in cities like Davao, General Santos, and even Manila (though this is an extremely long trip). From Davao, a bus journey to Cagayan de Oro can take around 6 to 8 hours, with fares typically ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500. This option is best suited for travelers who are not on a tight schedule and are looking to save on transportation costs.

For those who prefer to drive, Cagayan de Oro City is accessible via the Pan-Philippine Highway. The driving experience from Luzon or Visayas would involve ferry crossings. From cities within Mindanao, well-maintained roads connect to CDO. For example, driving from Davao City takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. Toll fees will apply on certain stretches of the highway. Planning your route and estimating fuel and toll costs is essential if you opt for a road trip. Remember to book flight tickets in advance if flying is your preferred mode of transport.

Best Time to Visit Cagayan de Oro City

Cagayan de Oro City experiences a tropical climate, characterized by warm temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The dry season generally runs from November to May, offering sunny days and lower chances of rain, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. During these months, especially around the Christmas holidays and Holy Week, expect higher tourist numbers and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season typically spans from June to October. While this period sees more rainfall, the showers are often brief and followed by sunshine. Visiting during the wet season can be advantageous if you prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for flights and hotels. It's also a good time to experience the lushness of the surrounding landscapes. Regardless of the season, always pack light clothing, an umbrella, and sunscreen for comfort.

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months. The period between November and February, outside of the peak Christmas and New Year holidays, offers pleasant weather and a good opportunity to enjoy the city. Similarly, the months of March to May, before the heaviest rains begin, are also excellent choices for a visit.

Food and Dining Near Cagayan de Oro City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cagayan de Oro City, often called the "City of Golden Friendship," offers a culinary scene that reflects its diverse cultural influences and local produce. A must-try for any Filipino traveler is Kinilaw, a local take on ceviche, where fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. You'll find excellent versions in many local eateries and restaurants, often served with a side of rice for a complete meal.

Another local specialty that showcases Mindanao's flavors is Sinuglaw. This dish is a delicious fusion of "sinugba" (grilled pork) and "kinilaw." The smoky, savory grilled pork is combined with the tangy, fresh flavors of kinilaw, creating a complex and satisfying taste. It’s a popular appetizer or main course in many restaurants and is perfect for sharing with friends and family.

For those with a sweet tooth, try the local delicacies made from cassava. Cassava cake, a rich and moist baked dessert, is a common sight in local markets and bakeries. Another variation is the steamed cassava, often served with grated coconut, offering a simpler yet equally delightful treat. These desserts are a comforting taste of home for many Filipinos and a delightful discovery for others.

Don't leave Cagayan de Oro without sampling some of the fresh seafood available. Given its proximity to coastal areas, the city boasts an abundance of fresh fish, prawns, and shellfish. Whether grilled, fried, or incorporated into stews, the seafood here is known for its freshness and flavor. Many restaurants offer daily specials featuring the catch of the day, providing an authentic taste of the region's bounty.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cagayan de Oro City

Cagayan de Oro City is known for its warm and friendly locals, embodying the spirit of "Bayanihan" and hospitality. When interacting with residents, a polite greeting like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) is always appreciated. Tipping is not customary but is always welcome for exceptional service. Respecting local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites, is important.

Safety in Cagayan de Oro City is generally good, especially in well-trafficked areas. However, like any urban center, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially at night. Avoid displaying expensive items openly and keep your valuables secure. It's advisable to use reputable transportation services, such as taxis hailed from designated stands or ride-hailing apps. Hotel was a nice place to stay but I won't recommend their service. I booked the hotel for 3 nights but I arrived on the second night, and only to find out that the room is not ready. Also, there were no toiletries as what is being advertised. Another thing is upon check in, I was told it was a buffet breakfast, but then it was not and the pantry was the most horrible place. The staff didn't even bother that there were guests having breakfast and their TV was way too loud and show was too annoying in gun fight.

They don’t have rooms on the ground floor level and no elevators. I was travelling with my senior parents and my 1 year old kid so it was a struggle, to say the least. Our original room was at the 3rd floor but thankfully they were able to accommodate us at the 2nd floor. Their restaurant was booked for an exclusive event the night of our stay so we had to go somewhere else for dinner.

Toilet bowl doesn't have a bidet, breakfast menu buffet are not good. Some of the facilities are old and need for renovation.

The swimming pool is so dirty, and the room is full of ant. The comfort room is so old and dirty. My goodness, I would not like to come back anymore.
