It's amazing! Only walking distance from MRT Shaw Station. Just google map the exact street. You need to turn an extra left to see Mariveles Street. The hostel is a good quiet place to sleep. Clean and well-maintained. Shared bathrooms are good too. They provide toiletries like (Towels, Shampoo, Shower Gel and Conditioner) Free breakfast in the morning. Just a simple breakfast like (Bread or you can toast it on the oven, coffee, water and Sandwich spread of your choice) For commercial areas. It is just walking distance near Shangrila-Mall and Megamall. Their staffs are accommodating. However, they have curfew for check-in hours. 7am-8pm...Be sure to message them if you'll be coming late. The staffs really do message/contact you via phone or email. To remind and ask of your whereabouts during check-in or check-out dates and time.

A neat and nice hostel right beside posh hotels in the Metropolis is a great find. The owner, Kris, and staff were helpful and kind. One doesn't get to find a lot of Backpackers, hostels and home stays in the Philippines just yet. It's still an unheard of place to stay the night. So, booking in one and experiencing what I experienced when staying in hostels in other countries can be truly refreshing. I just hope the owner gives their exact location when going there on foot, like where to get off from the bus, mrt, jeep, etc., which way to turn to, how many minutes, from the station or landmarks, etc. And oh, the toilet should be stacked with tissue papers, otherwise give your guests a roll as soon as they check in. But on the whole, this is value for your money, and would highly recommend it.

From NAIA, you can take a taxi or a ride-sharing service directly to Mandaluyong, a trip that typically costs between PHP 300 to PHP 500 and can take 30 minutes to over an hour, depending heavily on traffic.

For those looking to plan their air travel efficiently, using Traveloka to book flight tickets in advance can often secure better fares.

For travelers coming from other parts of Luzon, bus travel is a common and economical option. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from various provinces. Once you arrive at a terminal in Manila, you can then take a local bus, jeepney, or taxi to Mandaluyong. Bus fares from distant provinces can range from approximately PHP 800 to PHP 1,200, with travel times varying significantly based on the origin point.

Driving your own vehicle is also an option, with major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connecting to Metro Manila. From the expressways, you would navigate through the city roads to reach Mandaluyong, with toll fees and fuel costs to consider.

The choice of transport often depends on your budget, time constraints, and personal preference. For instance, if you're prioritizing speed and convenience, flying is the best option, especially when booked ahead of time. If you're on a tighter budget and have more time, bus travel offers a more economical way to reach the capital region.

Regardless of your chosen method, planning your route to Mandaluyong in advance will help ensure a smoother arrival and allow you to start enjoying your trip without unnecessary delays.

Best Time to Visit Mandaluyong

Mandaluyong, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season generally runs from November to April, offering the most pleasant weather for exploring. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for walking around and visiting outdoor attractions. Temperatures typically range from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius.

This period, particularly from December to February, is considered the cooler part of the dry season and is often the peak tourist season due to the favorable weather and the festive holiday atmosphere.

The wet season typically spans from May to October. During this time, expect intermittent to heavy rainfall, often in the form of afternoon thunderstorms. While the rain can sometimes disrupt outdoor plans, it also brings lush greenery to the surroundings and can lead to fewer crowds at popular spots. Traveling during the shoulder months of the wet season, like May or October, might offer a good balance between manageable weather and fewer tourists.

For travelers who prefer a more relaxed pace and are prepared for occasional downpours, the wet season can still be a rewarding time to visit, offering a different perspective of the city.

For most Filipino travelers looking for the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the period from November to February is often recommended. This timeframe falls within the dry season, offering comfortable temperatures and less chance of rain. It’s also a time when many local festivals and holiday celebrations occur, adding a layer of cultural richness to your visit.

However, if you prefer to avoid the largest crowds and potentially find better deals on accommodation and flights, consider visiting during the early or late parts of the dry season, or even during the less crowded periods of the wet season, provided you are flexible with your itinerary.

Food and Dining Near Mandaluyong — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Mandaluyong, situated in the heart of Metro Manila, offers a culinary landscape that reflects the diverse tastes of the Philippines. When you're in this area, you absolutely must try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken, pork, or a combination, the savory and slightly tangy flavor profile, achieved through soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a comforting taste of home for many Filipinos.

You can find excellent versions in local eateries and even in some of the larger dining establishments around SM Megamall. Look for places that offer a rich, dark sauce, indicating a well-marinated and slow-cooked preparation.

Another dish that embodies Filipino comfort food is Sinigang. This sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth, is a delightful contrast to richer dishes. It can feature pork, beef, fish, or shrimp, along with a medley of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The sourness is invigorating, and it’s a dish that truly warms the soul, especially on a cooler evening or after a day of exploring.

Many carinderias (local eateries) and restaurants in Mandaluyong will have their own take on Sinigang, each offering a unique balance of sourness and ingredients.

For those seeking a more substantial meal, Kare-Kare is a must-try. This rich stew is made with oxtail, tripe, and vegetables in a thick, savory peanut sauce. It's traditionally served with bagoong (fermented shrimp paste), which adds a salty counterpoint to the sweetness of the sauce. The combination of tender meat and the creamy peanut sauce is incredibly satisfying. You'll find this dish in many Filipino restaurants, and it’s a great option for sharing with friends or family.

The depth of flavor in a well-prepared Kare-Kare is something distinctive.

Don't leave Mandaluyong without sampling some Lechon Kawali or Crispy Pata. These deep-fried pork dishes are a celebration of crispy skin and succulent meat. Lechon Kawali refers to crispy fried pork belly, while Crispy Pata is a whole pork knuckle, deep-fried to perfection. Both are typically served with a soy-vinegar dipping sauce. The satisfying crunch followed by the tender meat is an indulgence that many Filipinos relish.

These dishes are often found in restaurants specializing in Filipino cuisine and are perfect for a hearty meal.

Finally, for a taste of something sweet and refreshing, try Halo-Halo. This popular Filipino dessert is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube (purple yam) ice cream. It’s a colorful and layered treat that offers a burst of different flavors and textures with every spoonful. It’s the perfect way to cool down on a warm day and is widely available in malls and local dessert shops throughout Mandaluyong.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Mandaluyong

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Mandaluyong, a friendly demeanor and a smile go a long way. It’s customary to show respect to elders, and using polite terms like "po" and "opo" when speaking to them is appreciated. While the Philippines is generally a safe country for travelers, it’s always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded public places like markets or transport hubs.

Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of pickpockets.

When using public transportation like jeepneys or buses, be aware of your belongings. For taxis and ride-sharing services, ensure the meter is used or agree on a fare beforehand. Emergency numbers in the Philippines include 911 for general emergencies and specific numbers for police and fire departments, which can be easily found online. It’s also a good idea to have the contact details of your accommodation readily available.

Informing a friend or family member about your itinerary can also add an extra layer of security.

For navigating Mandaluyong and Metro Manila, several apps can be incredibly useful. Waze or Google Maps are essential for real-time traffic updates and navigation, helping you find the most efficient routes. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are widely used and offer a convenient and often more predictable way to get around compared to traditional taxis. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are commonly used by locals and travelers alike.

Having these apps installed on your smartphone will significantly enhance your ability to move around and stay connected during your visit.

This was my first time staying in a hostel but it really exceeds my expectation. I really feel comfortable and the place is clean. I will surely stay again one of this days.

Everything is good and the facilities are great! However I had the misfortune of losing a few items (I thought I had just lost a plastic one, hays) while staying in the 4 female bed green room. She is really nice place, I just look really good. I have to be careful with my tools. It's a hostel so, eh. Should I ask if they have lockers or something?

This place is very convenient if you have to do something around Ortigas or Eastwood. It is easy to access by foot from MRT Shaw. Food for breakfast is decent and Ate Ana is accommodating.

Fast internet, accessible to EDSA, the staff at day is kind of snob but that's fine anyway.
