Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

Traveling to Cebu City from Manila is a common route for many Filipinos, and the quickest way is by air. Numerous flights operate daily between Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). You can typically find flights ranging from PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip, depending on the airline and how far in advance you book. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. To secure the best fares, consider using Traveloka to book your flight well in advance.

For those who prefer a more economical, albeit longer, journey, bus travel is an option, though it involves reaching a port and taking a ferry. Alternatively, direct bus services to Cebu from some parts of Luzon are available but are very long, often spanning over 24 hours and requiring a ferry crossing. For inter-island travel from Visayas or Mindanao, ferries are a popular and cost-effective choice, with various shipping lines offering routes to Cebu City's port.

Driving to Cebu City is feasible if you are coming from nearby Visayan islands accessible by land bridges or ferry. The journey involves navigating national highways and potentially toll roads. For those coming from Luzon, this would involve a combination of driving and ferry services. Planning your route and estimating fuel and toll costs is essential for a road trip.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The dry season, typically from December to May, is considered the most favorable time for visitors. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring historical sites, and enjoying the beaches if you venture outside the city.

The wet season runs from June to November, characterized by higher humidity and a greater chance of rain, often in the form of short, intense downpours. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it's wise to pack an umbrella and be prepared for occasional disruptions to outdoor plans. Despite the rain, Cebu City's attractions remain accessible, and the city's indoor attractions and culinary scene are always available.

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as December or May. These periods often offer pleasant weather conditions without the peak season crowds and prices. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Cebu City offers a dynamic experience for Filipino travelers.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu is a culinary hotspot, and no trip is complete without sampling its iconic dishes. Kinilaw na Tanigue, Cebu's version of ceviche, is a must-try. Fresh, raw tanigue (mackerel) is marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, onions, ginger, and chili, offering a tangy and refreshing start to any meal. You can find excellent versions in local carinderias and seafood restaurants.

Another Cebuano specialty is Lechon. While found throughout the Philippines, Cebu's lechon is renowned for its crispy skin and flavorful, succulent meat, often seasoned with a unique blend of spices. Many restaurants in Cebu City serve this dish, and it's a centerpiece at many celebrations. For an authentic taste, seek out well-regarded lechon stalls or restaurants.

For those with a sweet tooth, trying Halo-Halo is essential. This popular Filipino dessert is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down on a warm Cebu afternoon. You'll find numerous stalls and cafes offering their own unique take on this beloved treat.

Don't leave Cebu without trying Puto Maya and Sikwate. This traditional breakfast pairing consists of steamed sticky rice cakes (puto maya) served with hot, thick chocolate (sikwate), often made from local cacao. It’s a simple yet deeply satisfying combination that offers a glimpse into local morning traditions. Many local eateries and markets offer this delightful duo.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. Locals are generally friendly and respectful, and it's customary to greet elders with "po" and "opo" as a sign of respect. When visiting churches or other religious sites, dress modestly out of respect for the sacred space. Bargaining is common in markets, but always do so politely.

When it comes to safety, Cebu City is generally safe for tourists, but like any urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid displaying expensive items openly, and be cautious of petty theft, especially in crowded areas. It’s advisable to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps for transportation. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of your belongings.

For emergencies, the local emergency number is typically 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your hotel and the local police station readily available. Staying informed about local news and advisories can also be beneficial during your stay.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used for convenient and often more affordable transportation compared to traditional taxis. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are popular among locals and travelers alike.

The room was dirty...walking barefoot my feet turned black...the shower curtain was beyond filthy...It took them 2 hours to bring me an extra towel that I ordered and charged me 50 pesos and they would not give a second one...the refrigerator was a joke with no shelves in it and water sitting at the bottom...the counter top was dirty and probably not cleaned for a while...There was no mirror in the room except the one in the bathroom...there was no bidet in the bathroom...This cannot be a 3 stars hotel...I wouldn't even give it one star...I do not recommend this hotel and I will never stay there again...

This is my favourite, value-for-money hotel in Cebu city and I have stayed here many times in the past decade. The staff are friendly and helpful and the bedrooms suit me as possess all I need- in-room safe, fridge, TV, A/C, free WiFi, toiletries , peace and quiet. The hotel is within walking distance of shopping ,restaurants and a few pubs.

Good experience. Room is old, bed sheets were frayed, but kept clean. Thought I'd avoid the roosters waking me up on the 7th floor, but no chance. Ok for a night.

The first room was unacceptable, they moved me to a room that was better. I would not go back, unless there was nothing else available.

It’s hard to find fast WiFi in Cebu, even among the four and five star hotels. This hotel is clean, simple, nice, comfortable, and with good WiFi, decent food, good security, and a very comfortable bed, all for a decent price. The front desk staff is very friendly and attentive. The location is nice, close to downtown, with lots of bars and restaurants and stores nearby,

You sold us rooms from a hotel that’s been closed for nearly two years leaving our daughters stranded without a place. Well done!

An old hotel but location is fairly good. Opposite one can find some local eateries, and massage shops are everywhere near the hotel

This hotel is dated. Friendly and helpful staff. Old linens so worn there were practically holes in them. Did not eat in the restaurant. Good location close to dining, shopping, nightlife and transportation. All in all it was good for the lower cost.

Check was dismal no service what so ever why work in a hospitality service when you can't even be polite and helpful to the paying guests. Hotel is a little out of the way small shops around the area to buy goods McDonald's not far away and Robinson shopping centre is about 15 minutes walk .The room was big refrigerator free toiletries hot and cold shower large bathroom good bed ok channels .Ok for a night safe area they have a restaurant but didn't eat there. Would not stay again as there are plenty more hotels to choose from with friendly front desk staff.

Location is good. There are plenty of shops and restaurants in the area. We booked a Superior room but upgraded to Executive by paying PHP 320 as we were 3 in our family. The quality of the towels given in the rooms should be improved as they looked old.
