Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common way to reach El Nido from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights land at Lio Airport (ENI) in El Nido. From Manila, expect flight prices to vary significantly, typically ranging from PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip if booked in advance, and potentially higher during peak seasons. The flight duration is about 1 hour and 30 minutes, offering a quick journey to destination.

If you're traveling from cities like Cebu or Clark, you might find direct flights to El Nido, or you may need to connect through Manila. For those on a tighter budget or preferring a more scenic route, overland travel is an option, though considerably longer. From Puerto Princesa, the gateway city in Palawan, you can take a van directly to El Nido. These vans operate daily and the trip takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, with fares usually between PHP 500 to PHP 700.

Driving to El Nido is possible but extremely time-consuming, especially from Luzon. The journey from Manila would involve a ferry to Palawan and then a long drive. For most travelers within the Philippines, booking a book flight is the most practical and time-efficient method. Remember to factor in the cost and time for transfers from Lio Airport to your accommodation in Corong-Corong.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the best time to visit El Nido. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and minimal rainfall, which are ideal conditions for island hopping, swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities. The peak tourist season typically falls between December and April, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodation during this period.

The shoulder months, such as November and May, can offer a good balance, with pleasant weather and fewer tourists compared to the absolute peak. The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rain and occasional typhoons, which can lead to tour cancellations or disruptions. However, this period also sees fewer visitors and lower prices, making it an option for budget-conscious travelers who are flexible with their plans and don't mind occasional rain showers.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in El Nido, be sure to indulge in fresh seafood. Given its coastal location, the Philippines is renowned for its abundant and delicious seafood. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are commonly available and prepared in various styles. Look for local eateries or restaurants that showcase the day's catch; it’s a true taste of the ocean.

Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, is a must-try. Fresh raw fish (often tuna or tanigue) is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and tangy dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate. Many local carinderias and restaurants in El Nido will offer their own take on this classic Filipino appetizer.

Adobo, the national dish of the Philippines, is also a staple you'll find. While variations exist across regions, the classic chicken or pork adobo, braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a comforting and flavorful choice. It’s a taste of home for many Filipinos and a great introduction to Filipino cuisine for visitors.

Don't forget to try La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo. This rich broth filled with pork, shrimp, and various toppings is a filling and flavorful meal, perfect for a cooler evening or after a long day of exploring. You can find this and other local delicacies in smaller eateries around El Nido town proper.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service.

El Nido is generally a safe place for tourists. However, it's always wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit places late at night. For any emergencies, local police can be reached at their respective hotlines, and it's good to have the resort's contact information handy.

For communication and navigation, consider downloading essential apps. Google Maps is invaluable for getting around and finding places. Grab is useful for ride-hailing in larger cities, though less common in El Nido itself; local tricycles are the primary mode of transport. A reliable weather app can help you stay updated on conditions, especially during the rainy season. Lastly, a translation app can be helpful if you encounter phrases you're unfamiliar with.

Familiarize yourself with local customs regarding waste disposal, especially in natural areas. El Nido is actively promoting eco-tourism, so respecting the environment by not littering and conserving water is highly encouraged. Understanding these simple practices will enhance your experience and contribute to preserving the beauty of Palawan for future generations.

The location was perfect. Roads going to the resort was pretty bad but resort shuttle was available. Cleanliness was not maintained, and amenities were defective (door lock), bidet was leaking and no hot water ready to use. No hair dryer. There is room for improvement for the management to make it better and fix the issues we experienced. Friendly staff, thank you for our stay.

This place is beautiful. The staff was amazing, very kind and friendly. They do everything they can to help you however they can. Our hut or housing was very nice and on the porch was 2 comfortable chairs and a hammock which was a very nice touch. Some people were saying that the water for showers were cold and my girl did too, but i just left it running for a couple minutes and it heated right up and stayed that way. They do have scooter rentals and free rides into town but to get to the resort is pretty wild. Overall 10/10 experience.

Dolarog Beach Resort is off the beaten path. The location is private, serene, and the most beautiful place I've ever visited. Our cabin/bungalow was literally 35 steps from the water and 35 steps away from the sea water pool. The views from this resort are beautiful. No matter where you are on the resort, you have a perfect view of the water and other islands. As the sun set in the evenings, the views kept improving every few minutes. I can't describe how beautiful the changes in light and color were. I would think that I had the perfect picture, then the light would change slightly or the sky would turn the a different shade of orange - making another perfect photo-op. The restaurant on site had a terrific menu and we enjoyed every drink, meal, and dessert during our stay. The resort staff was top notch and took care of every detail to ensure the perfect stay. I suggest taking a private tour of the other islands using the resort's speed boat. What an experience! I will definitely return.

I give this resort an overall rating of excellent because the staff and the views compensated for the negatives of which there were a few. Bottom line is it’s no 5 star, probably more like a 3 but the views were stunning and well worth it.

The only advantage this place has is location. I say this because there is a beautiful view and beach water front. The cabanas are old and need refurbishing. The bathroom tiles are broken and the water pressure is poor. They are dark, dirty, and uninviting. The pool area is almost unusable. The furniture has no cushions and looks old and weather beaten. The pool water is straight out of the sea and is so cloudy I question the bacterial health of the water. Although the staff is friendly we never really knew who to ask for what. Always trying to find someone to answer our questions. Food service is disorganized. Simple thing like water, salt/pepper, hot water, napkins have to be sought after. The only way to get off property is a rocky road by golf cart (10 min) or 20 minute walk down the beach to the vanilla beach area. Neither of these are a good idea after dark, so you are pretty much stuck here for dinners. For the price I think there is better value elsewhere.

Love love love this resort! The stay and hospitality was more personalized! The staff were all accommodating and friendly and easy to deal with! We had the romantic dinner at the dock with a beautiful setup. This place is very underrated out of all the resorts in El Nido seems like. Nothing can beat the calmness and relaxing environment after going around town. Our vacation felt really slow and breathable in this place which was all we could ever ask for. Thank you Dolarog! We are definitely coming back!

My wife and I spent our honeymoon there. We had a wonderful time it was exactly what we had hoped it would be and then some. The restaurant is excellent staff, food, service etc. For me I have no problem with pets but i must say when I'm having dinner i'm not a fan of having a dog resting his chin on my table while I'm eating. The pets shouldn't be allowed to roam around the restaurant while you're guests are trying to enjoy their meal.I think many of your future guests would feel the same way. And for some it might be a deal breaker for retutun bussiness as well as referrals. As for us we just asked the staff to take the dogs away from our table and they quickly did so. Just our thoughts.

I vacationed at Dolarog Beach with my girlfriend for 6 days. If you’re looking for an exotic, off the beaten path, quiet place on the beach, with a very friendly and courteous staff, you will absolutely love Dolarog Beach Resort. But if internet connectivity and air conditioning are necessities (as it was for me), think twice about this resort. Although there is free WiFi in the common area (the restaurant/bar area) I could not download a movie and barely send a work email. Although there was an air conditioner in the room, it was rendered nearly ineffective as the room/bungalow lacked insulation (if you freak out over bugs & creepy crawlers, you will have difficulty relaxing at this resort). The kitchen produced good food, but even though I love pets, the dogs in the dinning area detracted from my enjoyment of the food, and my tolerance was stretched.

The staff was excellent! The grounds were beautiful! The food was delicious, and the combination buffet / special order breakfast was amazing! But the absolutely best thing for me was the house reef!!! I strongly recommend Dolarog Resort to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway in a tropical paradise!!!

TThe hotel is decent. We did not anticipate it being so distant from the city center. However, overall it was merely satisfactory.

The resort was about 10 minutes away from the main part of el nido. We loved that it was quiet. The beach and views were beautiful. Staff was very friendly and accommodating and could be reached in a timely matter. We were only able to stay one night, but we wished we could stay longer!
