Your Travel Guide to General Santos as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to General Santos from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to General Santos City from Manila and other major Philippine hubs is most efficiently done by air. General Santos International Airport (GES) serves the city, with regular flights connecting it to Manila and other key destinations. Flight durations typically range from 1.5 to 2 hours, and fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets.

For those preferring land travel, buses are an option, though considerably longer. Buses depart from major terminals in cities like Manila and Davao, with journey times extending to many hours, often overnight. While this is a more budget-friendly choice, it requires a significant time commitment. The approximate cost for a bus ticket can range from PHP 1,000 to PHP 2,000, depending on the route and bus operator.

Driving to General Santos is also possible for those who enjoy road trips. The city is accessible via national highways, particularly if coming from Davao or other parts of Mindanao. The road conditions are generally good, but the long distances mean this option is best suited for travelers with ample time and a preference for self-driving. Toll fees will apply depending on the specific route taken.

Best Time to Visit General Santos

The climate in General Santos City is tropical, characterized by warm temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The dry season generally runs from March to May, offering sunny days that are ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city. This period is often considered a peak travel time due to favorable weather conditions.

The wet season typically spans from June to February, bringing occasional rainfall. While rain can occur, it often comes in short, heavy bursts, and does not necessarily disrupt travel plans significantly. Traveling during the shoulder months or the wet season can sometimes offer lower accommodation prices and fewer crowds, providing a different kind of travel experience.

For Filipino travelers looking to experience local festivals, the Tuna Festival, usually held in September, is a major event in General Santos. If you wish to witness this celebration, planning your visit around this time would be ideal. However, be prepared for larger crowds and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodation during this period.

Food and Dining Near General Santos — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

General Santos City, being the Tuna Capital, offers an abundance of fresh seafood, with tuna being the star. Grilled tuna belly, known for its rich, succulent texture, is a local specialty that every visitor should try. You can find excellent versions of this dish in many local eateries and restaurants, often served with soy sauce, calamansi, and chili.

Another must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh tuna is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili, creating a tangy and refreshing dish. It’s a perfect appetizer or side dish that highlights the freshness of the local catch. Many restaurants offer their own unique take on this classic Filipino preparation.

Beyond tuna, explore other local delicacies. La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork and offal, is a comforting dish popular across the Philippines, and General Santos has its own versions. Also, take advantage of this on local fruits like mangoes and durian, depending on the season, which are often sold fresh in markets and roadside stalls.

For a taste of something different, try the local version of grilled pork or chicken barbecue, a staple in Filipino cuisine. These are often marinated in a sweet and savory sauce and grilled to perfection. Pair them with garlic rice and a side of atchara (pickled papaya) for a complete Filipino meal experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for General Santos

General Santos City is known for its diverse population, with people from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds coexisting peacefully. The local culture is generally warm and hospitable. When interacting with locals, a friendly demeanor and respect for customs go a long way. Learning a few basic phrases in Tagalog or Cebuano can also be appreciated.

Safety is a common concern for travelers. General Santos is generally considered safe for tourists, especially in well-trafficked areas and tourist spots. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions: be aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying excessive wealth, and keep your valuables secure. Stick to reputable transportation options.

In case of emergencies, it's good to have local emergency numbers handy. For communication and navigation, several apps can be useful. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are available and can be a convenient way to get around. Navigation apps such as Google Maps are essential for finding your way. For booking accommodations and activities, Traveloka is your go-to app.

Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may not speak English fluently. Also, having a local weather app can help you plan your daily activities, especially during the rainy season. These tools can significantly enhance your travel experience in General Santos.

We like the property but the way they handle the bookings were poor. We didn't get the rooms that we paid for instead negotiated with us to give us other rooms and just provided extra bedding. We booked 7 Family villas but we only got 3. Some guests were also complaining about it when we were checking in. The complimentary kits were not completed and we need to ask for it. The front porch were not cleaned properly and had a couple of trash. At least, the buffet staffs were nice and friendly.

We should have enjoyed more if there is pool for adults and if the sea is clean. The main reason why we checked-in in a beach hotel is to enjoy the natural sea water and to swim at the pool during the night. Unfortunately, the pool is until 5PM only. In fairness, we liked the place because it is clean, and the room is spacious. I would like to give complements to the cook, I really enjoyed the breakfast served. Also to the staff at the reception for being so nice, courteous, and accommodating.

Well, we had a hut for ourselves, which was nice. Decent sized room, porch, aircon, good mattress. Negative to the room are the paper thin walls that let u hear everything that's said and done outside and vice versa. They play music from speakers that lasts until late and starts again at maybe 5:30 morning when the garden workers arrive. Breakfast was included in the room rate and tasty yet small. We also had lunch and that was really good. The BIG disappointment was the pool. It looks nice on pictures and was the reason we chose Tropicana but during our entire stay it was closed. That left only the dirty and crowded beach, as this resort caters mainly to daytime visitors renting cabanas. We would not go there again.

I was in Davao for few days without time to travel to one of the further out beaches so I decided to try this resort. It has a very comfortable and traditional Filipino feel that makes one feel at home. Everything was functional in the room where I stayed and the restaurant is inviting and pleasant to enjoy. Watch out for Tricycles trying to give you a "special" ride. Just move along the road a little way and wait for the normal Tricycles moving about. Many there and easy to get in/out of the city.
