Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common and convenient way to reach El Nido from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights typically land at Lio Airport (ENI) in El Nido. Airlines like AirSWIFT operate direct flights from Manila. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but expect prices to range from PHP 4,000 to PHP 10,000 for a round trip.

Alternatively, you can fly into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), which often has more flight options and potentially lower fares from various cities. From Puerto Princesa, you can then take a van or bus to El Nido. These land and sea transfers typically take around 5 to 6 hours and cost approximately PHP 500 to PHP 800 per person. This option is more time-consuming but can be more budget-friendly.

For those who prefer overland travel, it's possible to take a bus from Manila to El Nido, but this is a very long journey, often exceeding 24 hours, and usually involves transfers. Driving your own vehicle is also an option, but it requires navigating long stretches of highway and provincial roads. The total driving distance from Manila is over 1,400 kilometers, and you’ll encounter toll fees along the way. This is generally not the preferred method for most travelers due to the time commitment.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit El Nido. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and minimal rainfall, which are ideal conditions for island hopping, swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities. The peak tourist season falls between December and April, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices during this period.

The wet season, from June to October, brings occasional rain showers and potentially stronger winds, which can sometimes lead to tour cancellations due to rough sea conditions. However, this period also offers fewer crowds and lower prices for flights and accommodation, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers who don't mind the possibility of intermittent rain. Traveling during the shoulder months, like November or May, can offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer tourists.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in El Nido, be sure to try fresh seafood, a staple in Palawan. Grilled fish, squid, and prawns are commonly available in local eateries and restaurants. Many establishments offer a "paluto" service where you can select your fresh catch and have it prepared to your liking, often grilled or steamed, served with rice and local condiments.

Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, is another must-try. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and tangy dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent kinilaw in most local carinderias and restaurants around El Nido town.

Adobo, the national dish of the Philippines, is also a popular choice. Whether it's chicken, pork, or a combination, the savory and slightly tangy flavor of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns is a comforting taste of home for many Filipinos. Look for it in local eateries for an authentic preparation.

For a taste of something sweet and local, try Halo-Halo. This popular Filipino dessert is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down on a hot day after exploring the islands. Many small stalls and restaurants offer their own versions of this beloved treat.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a friendly demeanor go a long way. It’s customary to remove your shoes before entering someone’s home. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service.

El Nido is generally a safe place for tourists. However, it’s always wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit places late at night. For emergencies, the local police can be reached at 0917-123-4567 (this is a sample number, always confirm local emergency contacts).

For communication and navigation, having a reliable mobile signal is important. Consider getting a local SIM card upon arrival if your phone is unlocked. Essential apps for your trip include Traveloka for booking accommodations and activities, Google Maps for navigation, and possibly a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may not speak English fluently.

Other useful apps might include weather forecast apps to help plan your daily activities, especially during the rainy season, and ride-hailing apps if available for local transport. Having offline maps downloaded can also be a lifesaver in areas with spotty internet connectivity, which can occur in some parts of Palawan.

Very tiny room, we had the room at the end so near the rubbish which bring cockroach and other insects around or inside. No hot or warm water. It’s not air conditioning it’s a ventilation. The bed is not confortable at all, even though I like firm mattress, I had to stretch in middle of the night. Then they don’t clean the room during your stay, so you go out once and all the dirt are in your room and water from the shower so it’s a mess right away. They also don’t give you new towel during your stay so… I guess if you alone and don’t mind about comfortable hotel room its fine, if not, maybe find something else. The good thing is the location, it’s perfect. That’s it I think.

It was so close to the beach. The room was great for the price. It's walking distance to the main town for the tours. Hot and cold water was provided all day. Good wifi. The staff are friendly and helpful. I loved staying here. The name of the property is confusing as it was hard to find as nobody knew what it was. It is actually owned by Eco Hotels. So it should be renamed so guests can find it quickly. They should also put more hooks and shelves in the room to help with storage.

After reading other reviews I was preparing myself for the worst but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The biggest problem was finding the hotel - it’s actually connected to the Eco Suites hotel, and the name Dormitels is nowhere to be seen. It’s also marked wrong on the map - follow Google maps and you’ll find it. I walked up and down the beach for 20 minutes with my stuff searching for the hotel. Check in was fast and easy. My room was fine. The rooms are small, but comfortable. Double bed, Air conditioning and private bathroom. The water is not great but this is normal in this area of Palawan. You can shower and wash hands, however, need to use bottled water to brush teeth etc. there was only cold water in the shower, but for me that was fine as it was boiling hot anyway. The location is stunning. The beach is seconds from the room - and sunsets are insane here. I walked into El Nido town every morning to do the boat trips - it took about half an hour. Or 100 pesos for a tricycle. Loads of great food options right by the hotel too.

Pro's: clean but basic rooms, nice staff, reasonable breakfast available on site. Right next to Corong Corong beach and some nice restaurants. Reasonable rates. Con's: massive construction works underway with site workers living behind the rooms and working at the front. Walls are very thin. Generally noisy.

The room was simple yet adequate. We were allocated a room a while away from the actual hotel but it was ok. We accidentally booked a double fan room, but got an aircon room anyway which was nice. There is a lot of construction going on around the grounds, but El Nido is growing at a rapid rate so this is to be expected, it's certainly not the fault of the hotel or staff. The little coffee shop in the ally on the left going up to the main road has the best omelettes ever! All in all a good stay and staff were pleasant.

It was everything it claimed to be. The rate was very inexpensive and the bed and bathroom were clean. That being said, it's not the hyatt. The electricity is often off during the day but on at night, the shower had no hot water and very little pressure, and the bathroom floor was large blocks placed on dirt so there are likely ant problems during some seasons. I needed a place to sleep before my 5 day island hopping tour and it was great for that. 50php for a ride into town was well worth the savings.

The comfort of the room is average, wifi and electricity sometimes did not work, but this all one can expect in El Nido. I was just little bit surprised that nobody was interested to clean my room during 5 days stay (not even to take out trash). Otherwise a nice place to stay when on budget.

No one of this property can help you with anything you need. They don’t even have phone service. No Wi-Fi in the room a rooster in my bathtub. It sounds alike never stay here.

The water has foul smell, it's filled with rusts! And the smell sticks to your skin and I hated it so much. I'll never recommend nor come back here! Check in at Novie's Tourist Inn instead you people, my family and I loved there.

A very basic hotel, therefore very affordable. Aircon worked well so did the tv. Staff was friendly and helpful. Close to Corong beach for nice sunset views. Reccommended for anyone on a budget who can live with cold showers and without wifi.

Horrible place would not recommend everything is in horrible condition. It seems like they didn't clean the sheets from the previous people staying. The are plenty of other places around to stay at that are slightly more expensive but definitely worth the money. I booked 3 nights here but only stayed for half a night. They also ask for a 500 peso deposit for the key

Except for a serious horde of ants marching across our room and bed this place was as decent as you could expect for the price.
