Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila is the most common method. From major cities like Cebu, Davao, or Iloilo, flight durations typically range from 1 to 2 hours. You can book flight tickets through Traveloka, with fares often starting from PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 for round trips, depending on the season and booking time.

Once you land at NAIA, you have several options to reach Makati. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available, offering a direct route that can take 30-60 minutes and cost approximately PHP 300-500, heavily influenced by traffic. For a more budget-friendly option, you can take the airport bus or a jeepney to a connecting point for the MRT or LRT lines that serve Makati.

If you prefer land travel from Luzon's other regions, inter-provincial buses are a viable option. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from Northern and Southern Luzon. The journey can take several hours, with fares varying widely. From the bus terminals, you can then transfer to local transport like jeepneys, buses, or the MRT to reach your specific destination within Makati.

Best Time to Visit Makati

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Makati is no exception. The dry season, generally from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for walking around and visiting outdoor attractions. Temperatures usually range from 25°C to 32°C.

The wet season runs from May to October, characterized by higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the afternoon. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it's wise to carry an umbrella or raincoat. Despite the rain, many indoor activities and shopping centers remain accessible and enjoyable.

For Filipino travelers looking to avoid the largest crowds and potentially find better deals on accommodation and flights, the shoulder months of November and February can be particularly good. These periods fall within the dry season but might offer a slightly less crowded experience compared to the peak holiday months of December and January.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Makati offers a culinary landscape that reflects the Philippines' diverse gastronomic heritage. A must-try is Adobo, the national dish, featuring meat (often chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. You can find excellent versions in local eateries and even some upscale restaurants throughout Makati.

Another Filipino favorite is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat or seafood, along with various vegetables. Its comforting warmth and distinct tang make it a beloved dish, especially during cooler evenings or after a day of exploring. Look for it in carinderias and Filipino restaurants.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an iconic Filipino dessert that you absolutely must sample. This refreshing concoction is a mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down in the tropical heat.

Don't leave Makati without trying Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its crispy skin and succulent meat. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, many restaurants offer Lechon portions, allowing you to savor this delicacy. Exploring the local food scene is a significant part of the travel experience here.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Makati, a polite greeting like "Magandang umaga" (Good morning) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders and a generally friendly demeanor are highly valued.

When it comes to safety, Makati is generally considered one of the safer districts in Metro Manila, especially in its commercial and business areas. However, like any urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly.

In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is 117. It's also helpful to have the contact numbers for your embassy or consulate readily available. For quick access to transportation and information, consider downloading ride-sharing apps like Grab, which is widely used in the Philippines.

Other useful apps include Google Maps for navigation, which is essential for getting around the city, and a currency converter if you're dealing with foreign exchange. Having these tools on your smartphone can significantly enhance your travel experience and provide peace of mind during your stay.

This accommodation is great for short term rentals like I did. Pros : cool room. accessible location. The room is dark enough to sleep even during daytime. Very affordable. Cons: Washroom is terrible. It stinks. And once the bathroom door is open, the odor flows outside all the way to the sleeping area. I hope they can improve the toilet.

Unlike an inn in general, it turns out people in the dorm had a long stay at this hotel and pay rent on a monthly basis (boarding), that the goods they are crowded. There is no electricity to charge handpone and others, we have to leave the front desk if you want to charge. Toilets and showers are shared and only delimited fabric. Staff not friendly, the location is far from the MRT but near the highway so it can use the bus.
