Your Travel Guide to Calamba as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Calamba from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Calamba from Metro Manila is a common route for many Filipinos. The most popular method is by bus, with numerous daily departures from major terminals like Cubao, Pasay, and Buendia. Companies such as JAC Liner and Jam Liner offer frequent trips. The journey typically lasts between 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic, and fares usually range from PHP 150 to PHP 250.

For those flying into the country, Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the closest airport. From NAIA, you can take a taxi or a bus to one of the southern bus terminals to catch your onward journey to Calamba. It's always wise to book flight tickets well in advance, especially if traveling during holidays or long weekends.

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Baguio or those in the Visayas or Mindanao, the most efficient way to reach Calamba is often by flying into NAIA. From there, you can follow the same steps as mentioned for international arrivals – proceed to a bus terminal for a direct trip to Calamba. Alternatively, if you are arriving from cities with direct bus routes to the Bicol region or Southern Luzon, some buses might have stops in Calamba. Always confirm the route and destination with the bus company beforehand.

Driving your own vehicle offers the most flexibility. From Metro Manila, take the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and follow signs for Calamba. The exit at Turbina is a common route, after which you will navigate local roads towards Pansol. The travel time is approximately 1 to 1.5 hours without heavy traffic. Toll fees apply on SLEX, typically ranging from PHP 100 to PHP 200 depending on your starting point and vehicle type. Having a GPS or navigation app can be very helpful for first-time drivers.

Best Time to Visit Calamba

Calamba, Laguna, experiences a tropical climate, with two primary seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season generally runs from November to April, offering sunny days and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the natural attractions. Temperatures during this period can range from 25°C to 32°C. This is considered the peak tourist season, so expect more crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season spans from May to October, characterized by frequent rainfall, often in the form of short, intense downpours, particularly in the afternoon. While this season might deter some outdoor plans, it also means fewer tourists and more budget-friendly options for accommodation and travel. The lush greenery is at its most vibrant during these months. For travelers who don't mind occasional rain and prefer a more tranquil visit, the shoulder months of May or October can offer a good balance.

Food and Dining Near Calamba — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Calamba and the surrounding Laguna province are rich in culinary traditions, offering a delightful array of Filipino favorites. One dish you absolutely must try is Buko Pie, a sweet and creamy young coconut pie. Laguna is famous for its Buko Pie, with many local bakeries offering freshly baked versions. Look for establishments that bake them daily for the best taste and texture. It’s a perfect pasalubong (souvenir) or a delightful dessert.

Another local specialty worth seeking out is Puto Bumbong, a purple rice cake traditionally cooked in bamboo tubes and served with butter, grated coconut, and muscovado sugar. While often associated with Christmas, many eateries in Laguna offer it year-round. Its slightly chewy texture and sweet, comforting flavor make it a beloved Filipino snack. Enjoying this with a cup of hot tsokolate (Filipino hot chocolate) is a classic pairing.

For a more substantial meal, try the local take on Adobo, a characteristic Filipino dish. While variations exist across the country, Laguna's version often highlights the balance of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. Many carinderias (local eateries) and restaurants in Calamba serve delicious Adobo, often with tender pork or chicken. It’s a flavorful and satisfying dish that represents the heart of Filipino home cooking.

Don't leave the region without sampling some fresh seafood, especially if you visit areas closer to Laguna de Bay. Grilled Tilapia or Bangus (milkfish) are popular choices, often prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors. Many lakeside restaurants offer these dishes, providing a scenic dining experience along with your meal. These dishes are best enjoyed with a side of steamed rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce, calamansi, and chili.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Calamba

Filipino culture is generally warm and hospitable. When visiting Calamba, embracing this spirit means being respectful of local customs. Greetings are important; a simple "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) goes a long way. Dress modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially in markets or during local events.

Calamba is generally a safe place for tourists, but it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like markets or bus terminals. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It’s advisable to use reputable transportation services. For emergencies, know the local police hotline number, which can usually be found online or by asking your hotel. Having travel insurance is also a good idea for any trip.

To enhance your travel experience in Calamba, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around, especially if you're driving or using public transport. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by Filipinos. If you plan to use ride-hailing services or book local tours, having those specific apps installed can be very convenient.

For managing your bookings and finding information on the go, the Traveloka app is extremely useful. It allows you to easily search for and book hotel rooms, check flight details, and even discover local attractions and activities. Having these digital tools at your fingertips can make navigating Calamba and its surroundings much smoother and more enjoyable.

The "Superior Room" is really small and felt cramped. When we got there, the pool was already cold and the other smaller pool was just "refilling". The staff were really friendly though. The management could do better with their amenities. Overall, we didn't get to enjoy the much anticipated dip in "hot spring" waters. I would not want to go there again.

The hotel is not along the hi-way/main road but is accessible by riding a tricycle for 40 pesos (special rate). Check-in is fast since we arrive Friday afternoon where they have only few guest to accommodate. Sad thing is that the bigger pool is being cleaned and only filled-up (almost) by 2am. We just had a short dip at the smaller and shallower one. Our standard room is too small as well as the bathroom which has no sink. Good thing they are both clean. Staff were approachable and even let us cook our food on their common kitchen. Also there are sari-sari stores right outside the resort for your needs. During our stay one of the guests accidentally tripped on the dark stairway because the staff did not open its lights for the reason that there are black bugs pestering around. The guest have to check-out right away because of swelling foot/ankle. Hope that wont happen again. For whatever reason they have, they should find ways to keep the stairways and pathways well-lighted.

Quiet and Calm... though we did not try its food... the location was accessible to various street foods and restaurants. Piece of advise improve internet connection to add comfort for the guests.

Accommodating staff however price is not worth it for the room.
