Your Travel Guide to Bacolod City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Bacolod City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most travelers coming from Manila or other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Davao, flying is the most convenient and quickest way to reach Bacolod City. Several airlines operate daily flights to Bacolod-Silay International Airport (NEG). Flight durations typically range from about 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options are often available.

If you prefer a more economical, albeit longer, journey, bus travel is an option, especially if you are coming from nearby provinces in Luzon or Visayas. From Manila, this would involve a ferry trip to Negros Occidental and then a bus. The total travel time can extend to over 24 hours. Bus fares are considerably lower than flights, making it a popular choice for backpackers or those on a very tight budget.

Driving to Bacolod City is feasible for those residing in Negros Occidental or nearby islands accessible by ferry. The road networks are generally well-maintained, particularly the main highways. This option offers the most flexibility for exploring the province at your own pace, but it requires significant travel time and planning, especially if coming from distant locations like Manila.

Best Time to Visit Bacolod City

The ideal time to visit Bacolod City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is generally sunny and pleasant, with lower chances of rain, making it perfect for outdoor activities, exploring the city, and visiting nearby attractions. The period between December and February is particularly favored for its cooler temperatures and festive atmosphere.

The wet season, from June to October, can bring intermittent to heavy rainfall, which might disrupt outdoor plans. However, this period also sees fewer tourists, potentially leading to lower accommodation prices and a more relaxed experience if you don't mind the occasional downpour. Festivals like the MassKara Festival, celebrated every October, are a major draw, attracting large crowds despite the possibility of rain.

For those looking to experience the MassKara Festival, planning your visit for late October is essential. This is a peak season, so booking flights and accommodation well in advance is highly recommended to secure better rates and availability. Outside of major festivals, the shoulder months of November and May can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Food and Dining Near Bacolod City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Bacolod is famously known as the "Sugarbowl of the Philippines" and also as the "City of Smiles," but it's perhaps most celebrated for its incredible food scene. A must-try is Chicken Inasal, a local specialty featuring chicken marinated in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, and annatto oil, then grilled over charcoal. The smoky flavor and tender meat make it a standout dish you'll find in many eateries across the city.

Another culinary delight is Piaya, a flat, unleavened bread filled with muscovado sugar and sometimes yema. It's a popular pasalubong (souvenir) item and a sweet treat that perfectly complements a cup of coffee. You can find fresh Piaya being made in many local bakeries and markets, offering a taste of authentic Bacolod sweetness.

For those who enjoy seafood, Bacolod offers fresh catches prepared in various delicious ways. Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, is a refreshing dish made with raw fish cured in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a perfect appetizer that showcases the freshness of local ingredients. Don't forget to try Napoleones, a layered puff pastry filled with custard cream and topped with icing, another sweet treat that's a local favorite.

Finally, no food exploration in Bacolod is complete without indulging in Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup made with pork, pork cracklings, and vegetables. While originating from Iloilo, Bacolod has its own delicious take on this comforting dish. It’s a filling and flavorful meal that’s perfect for any time of day.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Bacolod City

Bacolod City is known for its friendly and hospitable people. The local culture emphasizes politeness and a relaxed pace of life. Filipinos are generally respectful of elders and traditions, so observing local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches or formal establishments, is appreciated. A simple "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders goes a long way.

When it comes to safety, Bacolod City is considered one of the safer urban centers in the Philippines. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid displaying expensive items openly. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious when using ATMs. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911, and it's good to have the number of your accommodation readily available.

For navigating Bacolod and staying connected, several apps can be very useful. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are available for convenient transportation, similar to their use in Manila. Google Maps is essential for finding your way around the city and locating attractions or restaurants. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by locals and travelers alike.

Additionally, having a local SIM card or an international roaming plan will ensure you have data access for these apps and for staying in touch. Many establishments offer free WiFi, but having your own connection provides reliability. Familiarizing yourself with basic Hiligaynon phrases, though not essential, can also enhance your interactions with locals and show your appreciation for their culture.

Was hesitant at first because of negative reviews but I think this place is fine if you just want a mediocre place to stay. Bathroom just appears 'dirty' but they just said it's because of chlorine or muriatic acid for cleaning. I don't really see it as dirty. More like, the tiles just appear discolored or a bit rusty. Water was a bit yellow like other reviews said, but I also think it's because of chlorine and not really a dirt or anything else. It just runs fine and clean after letting it come out for few seconds. Sometimes it runs slow but I don't see it as much of a problem. Also no trash cans but they just provided it after I asked. I just don't understand why they don't put trash cans in the room in the first place though. The location is really good because it's near a shopping mall and many restaurants. My only concern was the windows, because they can't be locked and I felt unsafe in my room. Maybe it was just my room... But still. They convinced me that it's secured because my room was on the right side and it just faces another building and the space between the building and this inn was fenced and closed. But I actually felt unconvinced since this inn doesn't even have security guards. I would stay here again with a companion because it feels a bit unsafe for me to be alone here. Another thing was the WiFi. It was super slow in the room, it kept disconnecting and I wasn't able to use it properly. A bit disappointing but mobile data was fast in this area so I didn't mind too much about internet connection. I would just say it's really mediocre. It's really a fine place for a low-budget, just I hope they improve on security because no one wants to feel unsafe especially when staying alone.
