Your Travel Guide to Iloilo City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Iloilo City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila and other major hubs in the Philippines, flying is the most efficient way to reach Iloilo City. Several airlines operate regular flights to Iloilo International Airport (ILO), with fares typically ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, making it a quick journey.

If you prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces, provincial buses are an option. Buses depart from various terminals in Manila, such as Cubao and Pasay, heading to Iloilo City. The journey by bus is considerably longer, usually taking around 18 to 24 hours, with ticket prices ranging from PHP 1,200 to PHP 2,000. This option is more budget-friendly for those who have ample time and enjoy scenic road trips.

Driving to Iloilo City is also possible, especially for those coming from other parts of Panay Island or nearby Visayan islands accessible by ferry. The travel time and costs will vary significantly based on your starting point. Major highways connect to Iloilo, and toll fees will apply. This method offers the most flexibility for exploring the region at your own pace, allowing for spontaneous stops along the way.

Best Time to Visit Iloilo City

The ideal time to visit Iloilo City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and pleasant, with lower chances of rain, making it perfect for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. The cool breeze from the sea also makes the climate more comfortable for sightseeing.

The peak tourist season usually falls between December and February, coinciding with the Christmas holidays and cooler weather. While the weather is excellent, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. For a balance of good weather and fewer tourists, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November, March, or April. The period from June to October is the wet season, characterized by frequent rainfall, which might disrupt outdoor plans.

Food and Dining Near Iloilo City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Iloilo City is renowned as the "Food Capital of the Philippines," and a culinary journey here is a highlight for any Filipino traveler. You absolutely must try La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork, shrimp, and vegetables, famously originating from the La Paz district. For an authentic taste, visit Netong's Original La Paz Batchoy or Deco's La Paz Batchoy.

Another Ilonggo specialty is KBL, which stands for Kadyos, Baboy, at Langka. This savory stew features pigeon peas, pork, and young jackfruit, simmered in a flavorful broth. It’s a comforting and unique dish that showcases the local palate. Many local eateries and carinderias serve this dish, offering a true taste of home-style Ilonggo cooking.

Don't leave Iloilo without trying their fresh seafood. Being a coastal province, Iloilo offers an abundance of delicious seafood dishes. Grilled fish, oysters, and various shellfish are prepared with simple yet flavorful marinades. Restaurants along the coast or even in the city center often have daily catches prepared to perfection. For a delightful seafood experience, consider dining at Tatoy's Manok and Seafood Restaurant.

Finally, for a sweet treat, try the Pinelato, a unique ice cream made from local ingredients like mangoes and pili nuts. It offers a refreshing and distinct flavor profile that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find artisanal ice cream shops around the city that offer these delightful local flavors, providing a sweet end to your culinary explorations.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Iloilo City

Ilonggos are known for their hospitality and gentle demeanor. A common local greeting is "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you). It's polite to use these phrases when interacting with locals. Respect for elders and public spaces is highly valued. When visiting churches or ancestral homes, dress modestly out of respect for the cultural and religious significance of these places.

Iloilo City is generally a safe place for travelers. However, like any urban area, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or public transport. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911, and it's good to have the hotel's contact number readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city and finding your way to attractions and restaurants. Ride-hailing apps are also available and can be a convenient way to book transportation. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger to stay in touch with family and friends.

Familiarize yourself with basic Ilonggo phrases if possible; while English and Tagalog are widely understood, attempting a few local words can be appreciated by the locals. Understanding the local culture and taking basic safety precautions will ensure your trip to Iloilo City is both enjoyable and secure, allowing you to fully appreciate the warmth and beauty of this Philippine province.

Room is great. I arrived in time for check-in. Room was cleaned already and smells good (smells clean also). I like how the bathroom and comfort room are separated. Quiet. And accessible to landmarks and malls. Breakfast is served early. My stay was great. Friendly staff.

The hotel's location is perfect for exploring the city and nearby areas (port going to Guimaras, bus terminals going to San Joaquin, Garin farm, and Caticlan to Boracay). It's less than a 100 meters from Robinson's Jaro; a few blocks away from Jaro Church and plaza; and a few mins jeepney ride to Biscocho House, where you can take home their famous delicacy. The room is clean. Their shower's source of hot water though, needs updating. Their supply of drinking water is only at the ground floor, and their free breakfast of Jollibee meals only have 4 choices. In all, we are very thankful to BETH at the reception, who gave us routes better than GPS, and is very accommodating and pleasant.

There's a spider web inside the cr that makes me wonder when is the last time it was used by a customer? When is the last time they clean the room?. No WiFi (available at the lobby only). There's a small cable TV. It becomes a habit to me not to turn of the TV every time I go checkin, even if I'll go outside, take a shower and go to sleep. When I woke up around 4AM the TV was turned off. I asked my friends if they turned of the TV but they didn't! Glad we only stay there for one night. breakfast choices is good (jollibee meals) however we need to leave at 5am that's why we're not able to claim our food.

The location of the hotel was actually good. But what disappoints me is sleeping with bed bugs. My partner didn't find time to complain since its just a 2 days stay and we have to roam around the city fast. And another it was posted that they have unlimited coffee, but coffee is nowhere to be found. And the air condition seems unable to maintain the coldness of the room. (Maybe the a/c is not the proper size for the room) Staffs are somehow accommodating.

Not that good for the price. I mean it 's cheap but it can be cheaper, I guess. No offense tho.

Good location. No elevator in the hotel but it was okay since we don’t have a lot of luggage. Breakfast is from Jolibee.

The hotel is at the center of Jaro, very clean, staff are courteous and nice. I just don't like the breakfast, which is ordered at a fast food establishment.
