Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common and convenient way to reach El Nido from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights operate into Lio Airport (ENI), which is the closest airport to El Nido town. Airlines like AirSWIFT offer direct flights from Manila, with travel times around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly, but booking in advance can secure more affordable rates, often ranging from PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip.

From Lio Airport, you can take a van transfer to El Nido town or directly to your accommodation in areas like Corong-Corong. These van services are readily available and typically cost around PHP 300-500 per person. The journey from the airport to the town takes approximately 30-45 minutes. For those looking to book flight tickets, it's always best to compare options on Traveloka for the best deals.

Alternatively, for the more budget-conscious or adventurous traveler, you can opt for a combination of flights and land/sea travel. This usually involves flying into Puerto Princesa City (PPS), Palawan's capital, which often has cheaper airfares. From Puerto Princesa, you can take a van or bus to El Nido, a journey that takes about 5-6 hours and costs approximately PHP 500-800. This option requires more travel time but can significantly reduce transportation costs.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The ideal time to visit El Nido for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. Within this period, the months of March to May are often considered the best, offering the most sunshine and calmest seas, perfect for island-hopping and water activities. The weather is generally warm and pleasant, with minimal rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the beaches and lagoons.

The shoulder months, such as November and February, can also be excellent choices. You'll likely encounter fewer crowds compared to the peak season (December to April) and potentially find better deals on flights and accommodation. While the wet season (June to October) brings occasional rain showers, it also means fewer tourists and lush, green landscapes. However, sea conditions can be more unpredictable, potentially affecting tour operations.

For those who prefer to avoid the largest crowds and enjoy slightly cooler temperatures, the period from November to February is a good compromise. You can still expect plenty of sunshine, but the intense heat of the summer months is less pronounced. Regardless of when you choose to visit, El Nido's natural beauty shines through, offering a memorable experience for every traveler.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in El Nido, exploring the local culinary scene is a delight. Filipino travelers should definitely try fresh seafood, which is abundant and prepared in various delicious ways. Grilled fish, squid, and prawns are common offerings, often seasoned simply to highlight their natural flavors. Many restaurants along the coast serve these catches of the day, prepared to your liking.

Another must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, usually tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and tangy dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent Kinilaw in most local eateries and even on some island-hopping tour lunch menus.

Don't leave El Nido without sampling some local Filipino comfort food. Dishes like Adobo, Sinigang, and Laing are often available and prepared with the fresh ingredients of Palawan. These familiar flavors offer a taste of home while you're away. For a sweet treat, try Halo-Halo, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, and topped with leche flan and ice cream.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

El Nido is part of the Philippines, so the local culture is deeply rooted in Filipino traditions, characterized by warmth, hospitality, and a strong sense of community. While exploring, it's appreciated if you show respect for local customs. Dressing modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas is a good practice. Learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can also go a long way in fostering positive interactions.

Safety in El Nido is generally good, especially in tourist areas. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. It’s also advisable to drink bottled water to avoid any stomach issues. For emergencies, the local police can be reached at [insert local emergency number if available, otherwise omit].

For your convenience, having a few essential apps on your smartphone can enhance your trip. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is useful for getting around, though mobile signal can be spotty in some areas. Ride-hailing apps are not prevalent in El Nido; instead, tricycles are hailed on the street. A currency converter app can be handy for managing your budget. Lastly, consider downloading offline maps of the area before you arrive.

Upon arrival, I booked for 2 standard quadruple rooms, but because their Wifi was not working, they stated that they only had one quadruple room and instead gave us a classic double room. They stated their Wifi wasn't working for weeks and had no idea when it would be fixed. They offered a massage service from an outside company. When we booked the massages, they came to our hotel and said that their rates had changed and that the hotel had advertised incorrect prices. They also said they didn't have enough time to provide the services we had reserved for. There was also poor cell phone reception so it was difficult to stay in touch with anyone, most importantly our shuttle service & tour guide, During this time, they were also doing construction, so it was very noisy (loud banging). Whoever was doing construction, cut off our cable TV. So, our TV did not work. The breakfast is late. Most people need to get into town by 8am for their tours. We also had to leave early to get back to the airport which did not give us enough time for breakfast. The people at the front desk gave our room number to strangers who came looking for us for money. They opened our door while we were changing our clothes. This is a major safety issue. There are not elevators, so be prepared to climb stairs. Also, there are no phones to ring the front desk. So, if we ever needed anything, we had to find someone. I am very unhappy and dissatisfied with this property. I do not recommend it to anyone.

It was a nice place. The dining area had the most beautiful view. Restaurant was only open during certain times and wifi was terrible, but, overall very nice. If you are planning to spend a lot of time in the hotel, spend the extra money and stay somewhere else. However, if you are looking for a nice clean place, away from the backpacker hoopla this is it. Not far from town. 100 pesos in a tricycle and walking distance to beachfront restaurants and shops. Staff were friendly. Bring a blanket! They only provide a bedsheet. The room was nice and cool. I didnt even use the A/C but was cold at night with no blankets.

Very small room. Bathroom approximately 15 sq. ft. AC went out on the second day. No shelves or places to hang things. No wifi. Some rooms have no windows so very musty smelling. Spacious upstairs dining area that is very seldom used... but beautiful view. I realize this tends to be a crap shoot....but i struck out on this one.

Contacted this hotel before my trip and advised them that we need airport-hotel transfer and they noted that but got to the airport and no hotel transfer waiting for us. I had to find one for my family to transport us to el Nido. Staff was very helpful but the hotel itself is not so great except the view from the 4th floor. It was the staff that made our stay there pleasant.

We really enjoyed the location of the hotel, a bit outside the bustle of town. The hotel staff was gracious and helpful. The accommodations were minimal but exactly what we were looking for--clean and functional. We also really appreciated the free breakfast on site.

Accessible location. Accommodating staff tho service is not to be parred with hotels. Buffet Breakfast is only available on weekends. They serve per plate Breakfast Meals only on weekdays. Each 2pax room only has a thin sheet of blanket and 2 pcs. of pillows. There are black ants crawling inside our room and a gecko making sounds at night.
