We stayed three nights are El Rio Y Mar Resort and wish we could have stayed a week. This resort is hands down the best resort we have stayed at in the Philippines. It's very secluded from the hustle and bustle of Coron yet close enough that you can still do the island hopping tours and excursions. The staff were exceptional from the time you arrive to the time you depart. The food at the ONLY restaurant was absolutely delicious. We were a bit nervous about there only being one restaurant however there were over 100 items on the menu and the chef and their team did an exceptional job of creating some truly wonderful dishes. They have a guitar duo serenading couples at dinner each night. Their collection of songs was outstanding as I did not see them miss one request. There is no shortage of activities on the resort. From hiking, to an array of water sports, to scuba diving and just lounging on the beach or by the infinity pool. This resort has it all. If you are looking to trying disconnect and relax this is the place for you. The rooms were nice but not over the top. Just what you need for a comfortable nights sleep. We will be back for sure!!

Your Travel Guide to Coron as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Coron from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Coron from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights operate daily into Busuanga Airport (USU), which serves the entire Coron area. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer regular flights, with fares typically ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on how far in advance you book and the season. You can book flight tickets easily through various online platforms.

From Busuanga Airport, the journey to El Rio y Mar Resort in San Jose takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour via van transfer. These vans are usually readily available at the airport, and you can also pre-arrange transfers with your chosen accommodation. The scenic drive offers your first glimpse of Palawan's natural beauty, with glimpses of lush landscapes and coastal views.

While direct bus travel to Coron is not feasible due to its island location, for travelers coming from nearby islands or provinces accessible by ferry, there are sea routes. However, for most Filipinos traveling from Luzon or Visayas, flying is the most practical and time-efficient option. Consider booking your flights and accommodation together for potential package deals.

Best Time to Visit Coron

The ideal time to visit Coron, Palawan, for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calmer seas, and lower chances of rainfall, making it perfect for island hopping, diving, and other water activities. The peak tourist season falls between December and April, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodation.

For those who prefer fewer crowds and potentially better deals, the shoulder months of November and May can be excellent choices. The weather is still generally favorable, though there might be occasional rain showers. The period from June to October marks the wet season, characterized by more frequent rainfall and the possibility of typhoons. While you might find lower prices during this time, outdoor activities could be significantly impacted by weather conditions.

Therefore, for a reliable and enjoyable Coron experience, aiming for the dry season, particularly from December to March, is highly recommended. This period offers the best balance of good weather and accessibility to all the stunning natural attractions that make Coron a premier destination.

Food and Dining Near Coron — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Coron’s culinary scene offers a delightful array of fresh seafood and local Filipino flavors. A must-try dish is the **Kinilaw**, a Filipino ceviche made with raw fish (often tuna or tanigue) marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the taste of the sea. You can find excellent Kinilaw at local eateries and restaurants throughout Coron town.

Another local specialty you should sample is **La Paz Batchoy**, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular across the Philippines. It’s a rich broth filled with pork, shrimp, and various toppings, perfect for a comforting meal, especially after a day out in the sun. Many small carinderias and restaurants in Coron serve this satisfying dish.

Don't leave Coron without trying fresh grilled seafood. From **grilled squid (pusit)** to various types of fish like **galunggong** or **tilapia**, the local markets and restaurants offer an abundance of freshly caught seafood. Enjoy it simply grilled, seasoned with salt and pepper, and served with a side of soy sauce and calamansi. It’s a simple yet delicious way to experience Palawan’s bounty.

For those with a sweet tooth, try **Halo-Halo**, a fitting choice for Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream is a perfect way to cool down. You’ll find numerous stalls and cafes offering their own delicious versions of this popular treat.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Coron

When visiting Coron, it’s important to be mindful of local customs and traditions. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality, so a friendly greeting and a respectful demeanor go a long way. Dress modestly when visiting local villages or churches. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Safety in Coron is generally good, especially in tourist areas. However, like any travel destination, it’s wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded places. It’s advisable to use reputable tour operators for island hopping and water activities. Always listen to the advice of your boat crew regarding safety, especially concerning weather conditions.

For emergencies, know that the local police and medical services are available. It’s also a good idea to have travel insurance. For communication and convenience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map app like Google Maps is useful for navigation, though offline maps can be a lifesaver in areas with spotty signal.

Other helpful apps include a currency converter, a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may not speak much English, and of course, the Traveloka app itself for managing your bookings and discovering local attractions. Having these tools readily available can significantly enhance your travel experience in Coron.

We had a wonderful 3 days here. Having spent 3ish weeks in the Philippines staying at different hotels almost every 3 to 4 days, this resort tops it all. From the very beginning, the unique boat ride, the lovely warm welcome from the staff, the picturesque location, our beach front room, the food, the amenities and activities offered and did I say, the superb professionalism and friendliness of the staff again? It is just the whole package. You can easily spend a week here. We didnt want to leave! Keep it up!

We stayed for 4 nights in the native cabin. I would have upgraded to another room if it was available. The room is hot, the air conditioning is loud. The hotel only gives you one free cold kettle of water for the room per day. We’ve been to other resorts where they gave you three. The food is okay but after four days it was boring. The breakfast buffet needs more options. The staff are friendly. Upon check-in they gave us the wrong room. We booked a king and gave us a queen. They said the other room was not ready and we had to wait until 2:30 to enter it meanwhile check-in time is 2:00. When we entered there were dirty and used towels hanging on the back of the door. The island trips are very expensive compared to other options but you have to go with them because the resort is so remote. We also had to pay P3,000 for transport to and from the hotel as there are no other options but for them to bring you to and from. Other tourists are very loud and inconsiderate of others there. The staff do not ask them to quiet down. Overall I would not recommend this hotel.

Amazing resort. We wanted a place that has its own beach, and this was a perfect match. We stayed in one of the rooms on the sea, and the view was really great. They offer free snorkeling, paddle boards and kayaks, and the staff is always super friendly. There's a nice pool and beach, and everything is very clean. The only downside is that you're literally stuck there (boat transfer only), but we were there for 4 nights and didn't get tired of it for a second. We spent around $80 extra per day on food and drinks, and didn't take any extras like massages or tours. So take that into account.

Restaurant waiters have to improve their service attitude, I ordered pizza, but there is an ant sticking to the cheese, telling the waiter but she just took a look and left, completely ignoring us. But then we responded to the restaurant supervisor and she apologized to us. We join their dugong diving trip the day we check out, the staffs from this Resort told us we can make the public shuttle bus in Coron airport to city, but later told us there is no more public shuttle bus in airport due to the last flight arrived 30 mins early. They told us we only can take resort's shuttle bus to city. (they charge us very high price to city and told us we gave you discount. Set the price high and then gave us a discount. We can only pay and take their shuttle bus to the city, because there is no other way to city.) The fact is that even if the last flight did not arrive early, we couldn't catch the shuttle bus, because our dugong trip returned three hours earlier, because other travelers in the dugong trip did not want to take third dive. we could not catch up with the shuttle bus if we arrived after on time, after 3 dive. The plane arrived half an hour earlier, but we returned to the resort three hours earlier. The stuffs from resort told us there is public shuttle bus in airport and driver from resort will help you to transfer it. Later just want us PAY to take their expensive shuttle.

Loved the staff friendliness and availability (there was ALWAYS someone within a 5m radius Only thing that could be improved might be the food.... maybe having more fresh seafood available - either in a BBQ style or in ice out the front on the beach could be better. The restaurant could have been anywhere really... didn’t much feel like a seaside restaurant...

I loved this hotel, eco friendly and even provided us with bamboo straws to help the environment, the coral reefs were a surprise as they cover the whole sea bed. The tropical fish are amazing. The rooms are in good condition. The whole place is beautiful. I hope in the future they carry on there good work for the environment and find other alternative way to run the hotel and get rid of ear buds and plastic bottles/ bags completely. There’s a walk in the jungle up one of the mountains which is steep, however we must not of put enough repellent on as we Got bit to shreds. Beware when claiming this. The cost to do the tours are well more expensive than the other hotels, over double. food the drinks are more expensive too. The travel to the hotel is easy enough as 5/10min drive down a very bumpy road to their own port then on a boat for 15 minutes, however they charge a small fortune for this. We found it hard to get a beach towel has there were never any in the towel hut by the port bar. We have loved this hotel and would definitely go back.

Plenty to do at this resort. Friendly and v helpful staff. We were looked after very well without feeling crowded at any stage. Lots of excursion options. Great learning about how the resort helps the local ecosystem. Wish we had stayed longer. Particularly enjoyed snorkelling with the masses of barracuda and jack fish at the jetty (because the resort protects the bay so well). But the best part was the music from the guitarists at dinner!! Thank you for thinking of all the little things to help make our trip so special.
