Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For Filipino travelers, reaching Manila is convenient, whether you're coming from within Metro Manila or from other major islands. Flights are the quickest option for those traveling from distant cities like Cebu, Davao, or Iloilo. Airlines offer frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), with fares typically ranging from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for round trips, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka for competitive rates.

If you're traveling from Luzon's northern or southern regions, bus travel is a more economical choice. Numerous bus companies operate daily trips to Manila's various terminals. Fares can range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, with travel times varying from 6 to 12 hours. This option is ideal for those who prefer a scenic journey or are traveling on a tighter budget.

Driving to Manila is also an option for those with their own vehicles, particularly from nearby provinces. Major expressways connect various parts of Luzon to the capital. However, be prepared for significant traffic, especially during peak hours. Parking availability at your accommodation should also be considered when planning your road trip.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time for Filipino travelers to visit Manila is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it pleasant for outdoor activities and city exploration. Temperatures typically range from 24°C to 32°C, offering comfortable weather for sightseeing.

The period between December and February is often considered the most pleasant, with cooler temperatures and less rainfall. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodation. For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting in November or late April.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy. While this might disrupt outdoor plans, it also means fewer tourists and potentially lower travel costs. If you don't mind occasional rain and are looking for a more budget-friendly trip, the wet season can still be a good time to experience Manila.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. A must-try is **Adobo**, the unofficial national dish, featuring chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. Its savory and tangy profile is a true taste of Filipino home cooking. You can find excellent adobo in traditional eateries and even in more upscale restaurants across the city.

Another essential dish is **Sinigang**, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat like pork, beef, or fish, along with various vegetables. Its comforting and distinct sourness is a beloved flavor for many Filipinos. Look for it in local carinderias for an authentic experience.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, **Lechon** (roasted whole pig) is a celebratory dish that is a feast for the senses. Its crispy skin and succulent meat are legendary. While a whole lechon is for gatherings, many restaurants offer lechon portions. Also, don't miss **Kare-Kare**, a rich stew made with oxtail, tripe, and vegetables in a thick peanut sauce, often served with bagoong (shrimp paste).

Finally, for a sweet ending, try **Halo-Halo**, a popular dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s a refreshing and delightful concoction perfect for Manila’s warm climate. Many local eateries and even fast-food chains offer their own versions of this iconic treat.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) and a smile go a long way. Respect for elders is highly valued, so use "po" and "opo" when speaking to older individuals. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service, usually around 10%.

When it comes to safety, Manila is generally safe for tourists, but it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of petty theft. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's also advisable to use reputable transportation services, like those booked through Traveloka or official taxi stands.

For emergencies, know that the national emergency number is 911. It's also helpful to have the contact details of your embassy or consulate readily available. Staying informed about local news and advisement can also be beneficial during your stay.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used and offer convenient transportation options. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are popular among Filipinos.

There was no sign to identify the location and the handicap entrance was down the block. This is a unit in a condo and they ask for a copy of the passport and vaccination card of you and your guest before arrival. It is an extremely small unit and in need of repair. The kitchen floor had water leaking from the refrigerator and the host tried to charge me 800 pesos for a bathroom towel rack that fell when I entered. The host also charged me 400 pesos for an assistant to buy some medication from a pharmacy on the ground floor. He later returned the 400 pesos but tried to extort the 800 pesos for the towel rack. Apparently, the host was working with another scammer who called and said he was a doctor and that I needed to go to the hospital because I had a sore throat. I told him that if he was a doctor, he would not recommend treatment for a patient unseen. I contacted Hotels.com and told them that I was leaving and they eventually refunded my payment. This was an awful choice and I never experienced anything like this in all the years I have booked with Hotels.com.

Manager lied to us a lot. Told us our room wasn't ready and downgraded our room. He had others in our room for the first 3 days. Then we had to spend a day moving our stuff and the internet wasn't paid for the room. Spent hours talking to management to get it turned on. Then the next day our shower stopped working and management blamed us fot it and didn't send anyone to look at it until hours later. Then they wanted us to pay for it before fixing. Finally after talking to the for a while they replaced it. Bad circuit breaker caused the failure. Next day the shower hose broke because it was installed wrong. They also didn't replace the breaker. They just used electric tape to splice the wires and by passed it. We then hear from staff that they are telling everyone we are a problem couple and complain a lot. Was told they didn't want us to talk to expedia. They refused to compensate us for losing out on 3 of our 10 days there. We couldn't relax and enjoy our vacation together. We felt stressed out while we were there. Beds are very cheap and they don't have bedding to fit them so the tie the corners of the bedding and constantly have to remake it. We couldn't watch tv at first because everything on the tv had been set in Russian and couldn't figure out how to change the language. The staff wasn't able to help us change it. I had to try many different options and exit to figure it out. I would say stay elsewhere for the price. Room is very small for two people.
