Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipinos planning a trip to Cebu City, flying is the most efficient method. From Manila, numerous airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer multiple daily flights to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the booking time and season, but you can typically expect to pay between PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip if booked in advance.

It’s always wise to check for promotions and book your book flight early to secure the best prices. From other major cities like Davao, flights are also readily available, usually taking around 1 hour.

If you prefer a more budget-friendly option or enjoy longer journeys, traveling by bus and ferry is also feasible, particularly from Luzon. From Manila, you would typically take a bus to a ferry terminal in Batangas or Lucena, and then board a ferry to Cebu. This journey is considerably longer, often taking 20-24 hours or more, and involves multiple legs.

Bus tickets from Manila to the ferry port can range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500, while ferry tickets vary based on the class of service, from around PHP 1,500 for an economy seat to over PHP 3,000 for a private cabin. This option is best suited for travelers with ample time and a desire to see more of the Philippines’ landscapes.

For those coming from nearby islands in the Visayas, ferry services are a common and often scenic way to reach Cebu. Major ferry operators like OceanJet and SuperCat connect Cebu City to destinations such as Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Leyte. Travel times can range from 2 to 4 hours, with ticket prices typically between PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, depending on the route and service.

These ferry terminals are usually located near the city center, making onward travel to Express Inn - Cebu Hotel straightforward via taxi or local transport.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate, characterized by warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. The dry season generally runs from December to May, offering the most sunshine and the least rainfall. This period is often considered the peak tourist season, especially from December to February when the weather is most pleasant, with average temperatures around 28-30°C. If you prefer drier conditions for exploring outdoor attractions and enjoying beach activities on nearby islands, this is the ideal time.

However, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season typically spans from June to November. During these months, you can expect more frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy but are often short-lived. Despite the rain, temperatures remain warm, averaging around 27-29°C. Traveling during the wet season can be advantageous for budget-conscious travelers, as accommodation and flight prices tend to be lower, and there are fewer tourists.

The rain can also bring a refreshing coolness to the air, and the lush greenery surrounding the city becomes even more vibrant. For those who don’t mind occasional rain and are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, this period offers a great opportunity to experience Cebu City.

For a balanced experience, the shoulder months of May and November can be excellent choices. You might still encounter some rain, but the crowds are generally smaller than during the peak dry season, and prices can be more reasonable. Ultimately, Cebu City is a year-round destination, and the "best" time to visit depends on your personal preferences regarding weather, crowds, and budget.

Regardless of when you choose to visit, the city’s rich culture, delicious food, and friendly people ensure a memorable trip.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu is renowned for its culinary heritage, and a visit wouldn't be complete without indulging in its signature dishes. Foremost among these is Lechon Cebu. Unlike other versions, Cebu’s lechon is known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat, often seasoned with a blend of herbs and spices directly inside the pig before roasting. You can find excellent lechon at various restaurants, with CNT Lechon and Zubuchon being popular choices.

For a truly authentic experience, try it from a local eatery where the aroma of roasting pig fills the air.

Another must-try is Kinilaw, Cebu's answer to ceviche. Fresh, raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is "cooked" in vinegar, often spiced with ginger, onions, chili, and calamansi. The result is a tangy, refreshing dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate. Many local carinderias and restaurants serve kinilaw, each with their subtle variations. It’s a fantastic appetizer or light meal, showcasing the freshness of the seafood available in the region.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Rosquillos are a delightful local biscuit. These ring-shaped cookies, often flavored with vanilla, are slightly sweet and have a satisfying crunch. They are a popular pasalubong (souvenir) from Cebu. You can find them in local bakeries and souvenir shops throughout the city. Another sweet treat worth seeking out is dried mangoes, a staple export from Cebu, known for their intense sweetness and chewy texture.

Finally, no culinary exploration of Cebu is complete without trying Tuslob Buwa. This unique dish is a savory, frothy mixture made from pork liver, shrimp paste, and other seasonings, cooked in a broth until it thickens. It’s typically served with a side of puso (hanging rice) and is meant to be a communal eating experience, where you dip pieces of puso into the bubbling mixture.

While it might sound adventurous, its rich, umami flavor is surprisingly addictive and offers a genuine taste of Cebuano street food culture. Exploring the local markets and smaller eateries will often lead you to the most authentic versions of these dishes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is a blend of indigenous traditions, Spanish colonial influences, and modern Filipino life. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality, and Cebuanos are no exception. A common greeting is "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Kumusta" (How are you). When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dressing modestly is appreciated. It’s also customary to show respect to elders by using "po" and "opo" in conversation, though this is more prevalent in formal settings.

Understanding and respecting local customs will enhance your interactions and overall experience.

When it comes to safety, Cebu City is generally safe for tourists, but like any urban center, it’s wise to exercise caution. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets and bus terminals, to avoid petty theft. It’s advisable to keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. When taking taxis, ensure the meter is used or agree on a fare beforehand.

For transportation, using ride-sharing apps like Grab can offer a more transparent and secure way to travel. Emergency numbers to keep handy include the police at 117 or 166, and the local fire department.

To make your trip smoother, consider downloading a few essential apps. Grab is indispensable for transportation and food delivery. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, especially when exploring unfamiliar areas. For communication, a local SIM card or an international roaming plan will keep you connected. Additionally, apps like Traveloka can help you manage your bookings for hotels and flights, and even discover local attractions and activities.

Having these tools readily available will significantly enhance your convenience and safety while exploring Cebu City.

The accommodation is nice. And good enough if you are in a budget.

Room is clean and has a comfy bed to rest after a long day of roaming around cebu tourist attractions.

Staff weren’t friendly and not accommodating, very disappointed on the facilities, floors not tiled but just cemented as is! Towels looks so dirty we didn’t even dare to use original color I believe were white but it’s already too dark! No bidet in the CR and worst there are a lot of tiny cockroaches! Breakfast is also disappointing, you can only choose between corned beef, sausage and ham which don’t even taste good🙄 Will never book again this hotel, not worth the price👎

Location is good, staff are friendly only the rooms need to be upgraded( bidet in the toilet, some decor in the room, lights to be fix, aircon to change) should do a daily make up room for guest staying more than 2 days not upon request upon check in.

This hotel is perfect for backpackers and for travellers who would be barely staying in the rooms. It is simple, clean and very straightforward. However, there is no parking, and the photos on the booking site were made to look better and well lit than the actual rooms. We only stayed there for a few hours and left to go to a different hotel.
