Your Travel Guide to Davao City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Davao City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers coming from Manila or other major islands in the Philippines, flying is the most convenient and time-efficient way to reach Davao City. Several airlines operate frequent flights to Davao International Airport (DVO) from Manila (MNL), Cebu (CEB), and other key cities. Flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options are often available if you plan ahead. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka.

If you prefer a more scenic, albeit longer, journey, bus travel is an option for those coming from nearby Mindanao cities or even from Luzon if you're up for an extended adventure that involves ferry crossings. Bus terminals in Davao City connect to various points across Mindanao. For those traveling from Luzon, this would involve a combination of bus and ferry services, making it a multi-day trip. While more economical, this mode of transport is best suited for travelers with ample time and a desire for a road trip experience.

Driving to Davao City is also possible, particularly for those within Mindanao. The city is accessible via a network of national highways. For travelers coming from Luzon, this would involve extensive driving combined with roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferry services. The costs involved would include fuel, potential accommodation stops along the way, and ferry fees. This option offers the most flexibility for those who wish to explore multiple destinations en route but requires significant planning and time commitment.

Best Time to Visit Davao City

Davao City enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with temperatures generally ranging between 26°C and 31°C. The city experiences two main seasons: a dry season typically from March to May, and a wet season from June to October. However, Davao is known for being outside the typhoon belt, which means it experiences less severe weather disturbances compared to other parts of the Philippines. The dry season is often considered the peak tourist period due to the pleasant weather, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions.

For travelers looking for a more relaxed visit and potentially lower accommodation rates, the shoulder months or the early part of the wet season can be a good choice. While there might be occasional rain showers, they are usually brief and do not significantly disrupt travel plans. The Kadayawan Festival, celebrated every August, is a major highlight and draws large crowds, so if you wish to experience this cultural spectacle, book your accommodation and flights well in advance. Regardless of the season, Davao City offers a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.

Food and Dining Near Davao City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Davao City is a culinary delight, offering a diverse range of flavors that reflect its rich cultural heritage. One must-try is the Durian, the "King of Fruits," known for its pungent aroma and creamy, custard-like texture. While its smell is polarizing, many find its taste to be uniquely delicious. You can find fresh durian and durian-based products like candies and pastries in local markets and specialty shops throughout the city. Be adventurous and give it a taste!

Another local specialty is the Kinilaw na Malasugi, a Davao-style ceviche made with fresh swordfish or other local fish, marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, ginger, onions, and chili. It’s a refreshing and zesty dish that perfectly captures the fresh seafood bounty of the region. Many restaurants in Davao offer their own take on this classic Filipino appetizer, often served with a side of rice for a more substantial meal.

For those who enjoy grilled delicacies, the local barbecue scene in Davao is not to be missed. From succulent pork skewers to marinated chicken and seafood, the smoky flavors are a hit among locals. You can find excellent barbecue stalls and restaurants scattered across the city, offering a casual and affordable dining experience. Pair your grilled favorites with a side of fresh salad or steamed rice for a complete and satisfying meal.

Don't leave Davao without trying the local coffee. The region is known for producing high-quality coffee beans, and many cafes offer expertly brewed cups. Whether you prefer a strong espresso or a creamy latte, the local coffee shops provide a cozy ambiance to relax and savor the rich flavors. Exploring these culinary offerings will give you a deeper appreciation for Davao's gastronomic landscape.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Davao City

Davao City is known for its friendly and hospitable people. While generally laid-back, it's always respectful to observe local customs. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites like San Pedro Cathedral. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. The city is also recognized for its cleanliness and orderliness, with local ordinances often strictly enforced, such as anti-smoking and anti-littering laws.

Safety is a priority in Davao City, and it is generally considered one of the safest major cities in the Philippines. However, it's always wise to remain vigilant. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Avoid displaying expensive items openly, and keep your valuables secure. For emergencies, the local police hotline is a reliable resource. It's also advisable to have the contact numbers of your hotel and the local tourism office readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used and offer a convenient way to book transportation. For communication, ensure you have a reliable messaging app. Having these tools at your fingertips can make navigating Davao City much smoother and more efficient, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip.

They are open to entertain guest anytime. The facilities is great. Hot and cold shower. What I love the most in our 4D/5N stay, is that we have a door between our bedrooms. So, we don't have to open our front door and go to the other room. 😊

Walking distance from Peoples Park. Accommodating staff and security. However when i booked the hotel, it said that they have toiletries, well they will give you only a piece of soap. No toothbrush and toothpaste, no shampoo and conditioner. Room is spacious however they will give you a pillow for baby. Not worth my penny. It's like I am in a motel.

I arrived at 9am and check in without any problem and fees. The staff were very friendly and helpful with everything I need. The room was clean, there’s hot water, and spacious. The only thing that’s lacking is WiFi in my room because I stayed in the 4th floor. I have to go to the lobby and use WiFi but the connection is good. There’s no free bottled water in the room and if you buy it in the lobby it’s quite expensive. Better buy your water outside. Overall it’s a very nice place to stay.

Room was good. Not that big but considering the price. Nice and clean too. Staff are really friendly. Only bad thing was every 8 am for 2 straight days, there was some hammering in the next floor which was really a bother. Could have slept til later but slumber was interrupted instead. Called the front desk and they acted upon it right away. Then again, I woke from my good sleep.

Although the place is maintained, you can't say that it's not dated. Room lighting was insufficient for reading, even for make up application. My room had only the cove light; there was a side table lamp placed afar from the bed. Food was okay. Staff are approachable and friendly.

Staff are accommodating. Place is accessible. When getting there via taxi, the place is known as Pacific Hotel, Quirino. Whenever I say First Pacific Inn, they are not that familiar with it.

They are open to entertain guest anytime. The facilities is great. Hot and cold shower. What I love the most in our 4D/5N stay, is that we have a door between our bedrooms. So, we don't have to open our front door and go to the other room. 😊

The rooms are clean. I tried 2 different rooms (for 2 pax and solo). The food was great I love their breakfast and most especially the staff were so very helpful and nice. I’ll be back soon. Location is great only 10mins walk to Roxas Night Market and 350 meters away to pasalubong center and people’s park.

Although the shower knob had broke, service crew were quick enough to fix the stated problem. Extended from a 2-night stay to a 4-night stay. Would recommend to friends, close to everything.

Our stay there is superb! Spacious, comfy and clean. At the same time, receptionist and guard are very responsive and jolly. Surely will stay there when we get back in Davao.

Location is good. I booked to cover during the Kadayawan Festival and is just walking distance to the second judging station of the Street dance parade.
