I loved our 3-day stay at FJ Manila Hotel. The price is definitely a steal because you get way more than what you paid for. The location is ideal because it is near popular destinations such as, Cagsawa Ruins, Lignon Hill, Daraga Church and Sumlang Lake and since it is along the highway, public transportation is very accessible. The strength of the WiFi connection depends where your room is but still works for me. The best thing I would like to commend is the service, all of the staff is very nice and helpful. The free breakfast consists of rice, choice of meat, egg, drinks and fruits and can be served at your room or on their roof deck overlooking the stunning Mayon Volcano. I definitely recommend this place!

Great place! The owner went out of his way to greet me and continued talking with me during our stay and made me feel like a VIP. The view of the volcano from the rooftop was incredible. The rooftop was a great place to hang out and relax. The breakfast was great and their Sizzling Pork Sisig was the best I had while visiting the Philippines.

Your Travel Guide to Daraga as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Daraga from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Daraga from Manila and other major Philippine cities is quite accessible, with several transportation options available. For the quickest journey, flying into Legazpi International Airport (LGP) is the most efficient method. Airlines typically offer flights from Manila to Legazpi, with travel times averaging around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary, but booking in advance can help secure more budget-friendly options. From Legazpi Airport, FJ Manila Hotel is a short drive away.

For those who prefer land travel or are looking for a more economical option, bus services are available. Buses from Manila to Daraga or Legazpi operate regularly, offering a more scenic route through the Philippine countryside. The journey can take approximately 10 to 12 hours, depending on traffic and the number of stops. Bus fares generally range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500, depending on the bus company and class of service.

Driving to Daraga is also an option for adventurous travelers with their own vehicles. The route involves navigating major highways, including the Pan-Philippine Highway. The total driving distance from Manila is around 500 kilometers, and the travel time can be between 9 to 11 hours. Be prepared for toll fees along the way, which can add to the overall cost of the trip. Planning your route and stops is essential for a comfortable road trip. To simplify your travel plans, consider using Traveloka to book flight tickets or research bus schedules.

Best Time to Visit Daraga

The climate in Daraga, Albay, is generally tropical, characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. For Filipino travelers, the dry season, typically from November to May, is often considered the most pleasant time to visit. During these months, you can expect less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the region's natural attractions like Mount Mayon and the Cagsawa Ruins.

The peak tourist season usually coincides with the dry months, especially around holidays like Christmas and Holy Week, when many Filipinos travel domestically. While this period offers a lively atmosphere, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. For a more relaxed and budget-friendly trip, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as February to April, or the early part of the dry season.

The wet season, from June to October, brings more frequent rainfall and the possibility of typhoons, which are common in the Philippines during this period. While you might find fewer tourists and lower prices, travel plans can be disrupted by inclement weather. If you choose to visit during this time, it’s wise to stay updated on weather forecasts and have flexible plans. Regardless of the season, Daraga offers its unique charm and attractions.

Food and Dining Near Daraga — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Albay is renowned for its distinct culinary scene, and Daraga offers a gateway to these local flavors. A must-try is the **Bicol Express**, a spicy and creamy stew made with pork, shrimp paste (bagoong), coconut milk, and plenty of chilies. Its rich, savory, and fiery taste is a true representation of Bicolano cuisine and is widely available in local eateries and restaurants.

Another local delicacy to savor is **Laing**, which features taro leaves simmered in coconut milk with dried fish or pork and a generous amount of chili. The slow cooking process results in tender leaves infused with a deep, earthy flavor. It’s a comforting and uniquely Bicolano dish that offers a different kind of spice and creaminess compared to Bicol Express.

For those with a sweet tooth, **Pili nuts** are a specialty of the region. You can find them candied, roasted, or incorporated into various pastries and desserts. These nuts have a rich, buttery flavor and are often enjoyed as snacks or pasalubong (souvenirs). Look for pili tartlets or pili brittle for a delightful treat.

Don't forget to try **Kinunot**, a dish made from shark or stingray meat cooked in coconut milk with malunggay (moringa) leaves and ginger. The texture of the fish is tender, and the coconut milk base provides a comforting richness. It’s evidence of the Bicolano’s ability to create flavorful dishes from local ingredients. Exploring these dishes is a key part of the travel experience in Daraga.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Daraga

Filipino travelers visiting Daraga will find a culture deeply rooted in faith and community. The locals are generally warm and hospitable. When visiting churches like Saint Gregory the Great Cathedral or Daraga Church, it’s respectful to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially during religious services.

Safety in Daraga is generally good, as it is in most parts of the Philippines. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, know the local police hotline number, which can usually be found at your hotel or through a quick online search.

When it comes to essential apps, having a reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around Daraga and finding attractions. A ride-hailing app can be useful for getting around if you don't have your own transportation, though local jeepneys and tricycles are also common modes of transport. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by Filipinos to stay connected.

Consider downloading a currency converter app if you plan to shop or dine out extensively, although the Philippine Peso (PHP) is the standard currency. Having offline maps downloaded can also be a lifesaver in areas with spotty internet connection. These tools can significantly enhance your travel experience, making it smoother and more enjoyable as you explore the beauty of Albay.

Bathrooms are tiny. First room the bathroom stunk like urine, the water didn't drain from shower so it pooled the whole bathroom floor including around the toilet. The exhaust fan didn't work so the bathroom became wet . There's no power point in the bathroom and in fact only 1 available In the room . After complaining we were put in another room which was a bit nicer but still small bathroom . Tv had many channels but was small, wifi was good and the air conditioning was good but loud . Shower had hot water but the sink didn't and the lighting in both bathrooms was dim . The roof top wasn't particularly a nice place to be although the view of the volcano was good.

The Room was very small, Not cleaned , very dusty Windows dirty, Bathroom very small Window ledges fill with crud. Customer Service was Very Very Good. When I needed to find flowers for Valentines day . They went out of there way to get me a nice Bouquet. . Breakfast was okay .. Roof top dinning should have a better looking roof . Great View of the Mountain though . no Elevator . Everything Small and unattractive . Noise outside was loud and keeping me awake at night .

The contractor/builder of room 310 needs to learn how to work with a leveler, because the floor of the bathroom is not level. The water of the shower doesn't run towards the drain, it runs toward the entrance of the bathroom. The entire bathroom is standing under water, which means if you get up at night to use the bathroom your feed are totally wet. Otherwise the room was very clean and the price is right. The breakfast looks good but unfortunately the rice and beef Adobo was cold. Very friendly staff.

The hotel staff was excellent , I didnt know that this hotel got a stiff step, because their is no lift. We have a heavy luggage but the poor staff has to carry them up to the top. The room is big and clean. The breakfast is ok we eat in the roof top lucky it was not raining . They have live in massage which is very comfortable. My suggestion is to have a lift in the hotel it is not safe to up and down in a stiff step . Have a better lounge as well . But over all it is a nice little hotel .

We recommend this hotel for it's location, price and service. Close to must see tourist area (Cagsawa Ruins, Daraga Church and local market/transport). The staff were very accommodating to your needs.

We had to go without power for over 15 hours and they said they had a generator but they was not able to use it I asked for a single bed and they gave us 2 single beds that kept sliding apart on us, there was no door to the shower so no I am not happy at all. if I could get a refund I would take it.

A nice hotel with friendly and helpful stag. We spent three nights there and were sightseeing the legazpi area. Only negative was the plastic madras sea in the bed, they made you sweet even with the aircon on. The roof were a really nice spot to catch a evening breeze and gave a great look at mt Mayon.

Great place! The owner went out of his way to greet me and continued talking with me during our stay and made me feel like a VIP. The view of the volcano from the rooftop was incredible. The rooftop was a great place to hang out and relax. The breakfast was great and their Sizzling Pork Sisig was the best I had while visiting the Philippines.

we have enjoyed yet another visit to FJ Manila we asked if we could upgrade our room to a bigger room due to 5 night stay and wanted to know costs associated we were delighted with the response saying yes we could and no charge for the upgrade now that is true hospitality hey! its really great to have that kind of response even though we were aware we booked a room a bit smaller than we needed for 5 night stay. a great hotel and wonderful views of Mt Mayon from the rooftop where breakfast is served and the helpers who have worked here for a long time serve so perfectly and nothing is ever too much trouble for them give this hotel a try. easy access to jeeps and transport around Daraga and Legazpi City
