Amazing stay. The property immerses you in the Filipino countryside surrounded by the Loboc River and rice paddys on the other side. The cottages provide everything you need with nice outdoor terraces depending on your cottage. The outdoor showers were also a unique touch. The food and service we received at the fox and firefly were exceptional - GM the multilinguist waiter treats each guest with a lot of attention and care. The food was so good ! Our favorites were the papaya salad, coconut chicken, and the jackfruit French toast in the mornings - just talking about it now makes me miss it. Noteworthy as well, were The massage therapists - one of the best massages I’ve ever received. We did not have the chance to try but they have a big elevated yoga “studio?” that probably attracts the majority of their guests. The excursions arranged by them were reasonably priced and memorable! We did so much in our short stay. Overall, fox and the firefly is a lovely little countryside oasis with a great staff, food, and proximity to great activities.

Your Travel Guide to Loboc as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Loboc from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Loboc from Manila or other major Philippine cities primarily involves flying into Tagbilaran Airport (TAG) in Bohol. Several airlines operate flights from Manila (MNL) to TAG, with travel times typically around 1 hour and 20 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, so it's wise to compare options on Traveloka.

From Tagbilaran Airport, you have several options to reach Loboc. Tricycles and taxis are available for hire, offering direct transport. Alternatively, you can take a local bus or van from the Tagbilaran City bus terminal heading towards Carmen or Jagna, and ask the driver to drop you off in Loboc. This is often the most budget-friendly option for Filipino travelers.

For those coming from other islands like Cebu, ferry services are a popular choice. Ferries from Cebu City to Tagbilaran Port are frequent. Once you arrive at Tagbilaran Port, you can follow the same transport options mentioned above – buses, vans, or taxis – to make your way to Loboc. Planning your journey in advance ensures a smoother transition to your accommodation.

Best Time to Visit Loboc

The Philippines generally experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. For Loboc and Bohol, the dry season, typically from December to May, is often considered the best time to visit. During these months, you can expect more sunshine and less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities like river cruises and exploring the countryside.

The peak tourist season usually falls within the dry months, especially around the Christmas holidays and Holy Week. While the weather is generally favorable, expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights. For a more relaxed and potentially cheaper trip, consider visiting during the shoulder months of the dry season, such as January to February or April to May, avoiding major holidays.

The wet season, from June to November, brings a higher chance of rain. However, this doesn't mean you should avoid visiting. Rainfall in the Philippines is often in the form of heavy but short-lived downpours, and you can still enjoy many attractions. Traveling during this period might offer a more tranquil experience and better deals, provided you are prepared for occasional rain showers.

Food and Dining Near Loboc — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Bohol, particularly in areas like Loboc, you must try Kinilaw na Tanigue. This is the Filipino version of ceviche, where fresh raw fish (often Spanish mackerel or tanigue) is "cooked" in vinegar, mixed with onions, ginger, chili, and sometimes coconut milk. It’s a refreshing and tangy dish, perfect for the tropical climate, and you can often find it at local eateries or even on the Loboc River cruise.

Another local specialty worth seeking out is Peanut Kisses. These are small, heart-shaped cookies made from a mixture of flour, sugar, eggs, and, of course, ground peanuts. They are crunchy, sweet, and have a distinct nutty flavor, making them a popular pasalubong (souvenir) from Bohol. Jojie's Bakeshop, being nearby, is a likely place to find these delightful treats.

For a more substantial meal, take advantage of this on Adobong Manok or Baboy. While a staple across the Philippines, each region has its own subtle variations. In Bohol, you might find it prepared with a local touch, offering a savory and slightly tangy flavor profile from the soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. It’s a comforting and familiar dish that’s always satisfying.

Seafood is abundant in Bohol, so exploring grilled options is highly recommended. Grilled Liempo (pork belly) or various types of fresh fish are often prepared simply but deliciously over charcoal. Enjoying these grilled specialties with a side of rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce and calamansi is a classic Filipino dining experience that you should definitely indulge in during your stay.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Loboc

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. In Loboc, you'll likely encounter friendly locals who are proud of their heritage. It's always appreciated to greet people with a smile and a polite "Maayong buntag" (Good morning) or "Salamat" (Thank you). Respecting local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches, is important.

Safety in Loboc is generally good, as it's a relatively peaceful area. However, as with any travel, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, local police can be reached at [Insert local police emergency number if available, otherwise omit or use a general Philippine emergency number like 911].

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around and finding places. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter phrases you're unfamiliar with, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. For managing your bookings and travel plans, the Traveloka app is indispensable.

Another useful app could be a currency converter if you plan on shopping or dining extensively. Having these tools readily available on your smartphone can make navigating Loboc and Bohol much smoother, allowing you to focus more on enjoying the beautiful scenery and local culture. Remember to check for offline map capabilities for areas with limited connectivity.

I absolutely loved this accommodation, and my stay on the river. They took care of every need. It was an absolutely fantastic location and easy to get to the Chocolate Hills and beyond! I highly recommend Fox and The Firefly The only suggestion I have is a small mirror in each hut, that way you don't have to monopolize the shared bathroom.

What a gem in Loboc! Gorgeous place in beautiful surroundings. Easy to rent a scooter to explore the area. Love the outdoor shower and glad there were mosquito nets provided over the beds. The restaurant was excellent and they probably had the best coffee in the Philippines! We also did the stand up paddle tour by night to watch fireflies, amazing experience!

The staffs there are very friendly and they have several cute pups too. The only down side I would say is the mosquitoes, should put some repellent for the room as well apart from just the net for the beds. Wifi need to be improve!

Unfortunately we had a very bad experience staying in this hotel for one night. This hotel is a cheap eco hotel but this doesn’t mean that it had to be dirty (see photo of blood on wall). The little traditional huts that they have are cute from the outside, but very small inside. The shower and toilet is private but ouside. Our hut was dirty and had a lot of insects in it, even ants on the bed. At the reception there was a mouse in a mouse trap screaming as the local dogs were trying to attack it! Bad wifi, no bottled water. I got sick probably after eating and drinking at the restaurant at the hotel on the first night. The day after I was in a very bad shape and needed to go to the hospital. The hotel staff didn’t offer much help as they had available cars there but they made us get a taxi to the hospital. The only advice they gave us was to go to the university hospital, and that we wouldn’t get any refund if we decide not to spend the night at the hotel as per original booking. We went to another hotel that night. Posivite: Location is very good, next to the river, offering cool activities. Wouldn’t go back.

Great experience, staff were very kind. We received an icetea ginger welcome drink, so good. Huts are small but clean and nice. Outdoor shower and bathroom is shared but so neat. I recommend going here just for the originality of the place. The food at the restaurant is DELICISOUS!

No AC and lots of lizards and flies. The concept is close to nature. So these are side effects of it. We love the area near river. Beautiful decor. Friendly staff

This place in wonderful. It's in the little details. So many small things are included that make your stay hassle free and special. The cottages are beautiful and comfortable and it's just a peaceful experience beside the Loboc River. The outdoor bathrooms are really nice, and the staff are very helpful!!
