An Evening Open-Air Charcoal Fired Bar-B-Que is located within easy walking distance from the Hotel. The food tastes exceptionally good. I ate there each evening without fail. Eating venues @ the nearby Ayala Mall included Filipino Restaurants as well as a Korean All-You-Care-To-Eat Buffet (( I did experience extreme frustration on the day of my departure for the airport when I discovered the van supposed to be able to transport me to the Airport was leaving from the Makati Mall -- some distance away. I first took a taxi to the departure point. Paid the 199 Peso Tariff -- only to learn it would be impossible to arrive at the airport in time for my 2:15 Departure. A SECOND TAXI WAS REQUIRED ( COSTING ME MORE THAN 400 PESOS MORE THAN I HAD ANTICIPATED. ) Approximately $11.00 more than I had budgeted. Never had any regrets about my stay there. Clean, Comfortable, & Hospitable. The desk personnel & security staff were exceptional in their demeanor & courtesy. The Chinese Restaurant directly across the street serves Great Coffee as well as unusual Breakfast Entrees such as Steamed Cabbage cooked with Onions, Garlic, & Butter. (( Also available are Chinese Dumplings for 8 Pesos each. )) IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THIS IS AN "ALCOHOL-FREE" ESTABLISHMENT.

Your Travel Guide to Cagayan de Oro City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cagayan de Oro City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers heading to Cagayan de Oro City, flying is the most efficient option. From Manila (Ninoy Aquino International Airport - NAIA), several airlines operate daily flights to Laguindingan Airport (CGY), the gateway to CDO. Expect flight durations to be around 1 hour and 30 minutes to 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for approximately PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip if booked strategically. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines are among the major carriers. Booking your flight through Traveloka can help you compare prices and find the best deals.

If you're coming from Cebu, the travel time is even shorter, with flights to Laguindingan Airport taking about 1 hour. Fares are generally competitive, often ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,500 for a round trip. Travelers from Davao also have flight options, though direct flights might be less frequent than from Manila or Cebu, sometimes requiring a layover. If direct flights are unavailable or too expensive, consider flying to a major hub like Manila or Cebu first.

For those who prefer land travel, buses are a more economical but significantly longer option. From Manila, a bus journey to Cagayan de Oro City can take anywhere from 20 to 24 hours, with fares typically ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500 for a one-way ticket. Major bus companies operate routes from Cubao and Pasay terminals.

From Cebu City, you can also take a ferry, which is a more scenic but time-consuming option, taking around 20-22 hours. Bus travel from Davao City to Cagayan de Oro City takes approximately 6 to 8 hours, with fares usually between PHP 700 to PHP 1,200. When planning your trip, consider the trade-off between time and cost.

For most travelers, especially those coming from Luzon or Visayas, booking a flight is the most practical choice, and using Traveloka to book your flight can streamline this process.

Best Time to Visit Cagayan de Oro City

Cagayan de Oro City enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The city doesn't experience a distinct dry or wet season in the same way some other parts of the Philippines do, but rainfall is more frequent from June to October. This period can see heavier downpours, which might affect outdoor activities like whitewater rafting.

However, these rains often come in short, intense bursts, usually in the afternoon, and don't necessarily disrupt travel plans for the entire day.

For travelers seeking the most pleasant weather for outdoor adventures and city exploration, the period from November to May is often considered ideal. During these months, you'll generally find sunnier skies and less frequent rain. This is also the time when many local festivals and events take place, adding a layer of cultural richness to your visit. However, this also means it's peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights.

If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as November or February, where you can still enjoy good weather with fewer tourists.

If your primary interest is experiencing the city's famous whitewater rafting on the Cagayan de Oro River, the water levels are generally good year-round, though they can be higher and more thrilling after periods of rain. For those on a tighter budget, visiting during the off-peak season (roughly July to September) might offer more affordable travel options, though you should be prepared for the possibility of more rain.

Ultimately, Cagayan de Oro City is a destination that can be enjoyed at any time of the year, with each season offering its own unique charm and opportunities for exploration.

Food and Dining Near Cagayan de Oro City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cagayan de Oro City, affectionately known as the "City of Golden Friendship," offers a culinary landscape that reflects its diverse influences and local bounty. For Filipino travelers, exploring the local food scene is an integral part of the travel experience, and CDO does not disappoint. One dish you absolutely must try is the **Sinuglaw**.

This is a delightful fusion of "sinugba" (grilled) and "kinilaw" (ceviche), typically featuring grilled pork belly and fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. The smoky char of the pork combined with the tangy, spicy kick of the kinilaw creates a complex and addictive flavor profile. You'll find excellent versions in local eateries and restaurants, often served as a pulutan (bar snack) or a main dish.

Another local specialty that captures the essence of Mindanaoan flavors is **Pastel de Leche**. While variations of this sweet pastry exist across the Philippines, CDO's version, particularly from Vjandep Bakeshop, is renowned. It's a soft, fluffy sponge cake filled with a rich, creamy custard. It’s perfect as a pasalubong (take-home gift) or a sweet treat to enjoy with coffee. Its popularity means you can easily find it in bakeshops and souvenir stores throughout the city.

For those who enjoy hearty, flavorful meals, **Chicken Inasal** is a must-try. While popular throughout the Visayas and Mindanao, CDO has its own take on this marinated, grilled chicken dish. Typically marinated in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, vinegar, and annatto oil, which gives it a distinct reddish hue and a smoky, tangy flavor. It's often served with a side of garlic rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce, vinegar, and chili.

Look for local carinderias or specialty grilled food restaurants for the most authentic experience.

Don't leave Cagayan de Oro without trying **Bulalo**. While it's a staple in many parts of the Philippines, CDO's version often features a generous portion of tender beef shanks and bone marrow, simmered in a clear, flavorful broth until the meat is fall-off-the-bone tender. It’s a comforting and hearty soup, especially perfect after a day of adventure or on a cooler evening.

Many local restaurants serve this, often with a side of rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce and calamansi. Exploring these dishes will give you a true taste of Cagayan de Oro's culinary identity.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cagayan de Oro City

Cagayan de Oro City is known for its warm hospitality, earning it the moniker "City of Golden Friendship." Filipinos are generally friendly and welcoming, and this is very much true in CDO. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders and local customs is appreciated. While the city is generally safe, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions as you would in any urban environment.

Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid displaying excessive wealth. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of your belongings.

For emergency situations, it's useful to have key contact numbers handy. The local emergency hotline is typically 911. For police assistance, you can contact the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office. It's also advisable to save the contact number for your hotel, G-Galyx InnHotel, in case you need immediate assistance related to your accommodation. When using public transportation like jeepneys or taxis, ensure you have small denominations of cash for fares.

For longer distances or more comfort, consider using ride-hailing apps or negotiating taxi fares before your trip begins.

To enhance your travel experience in Cagayan de Oro City, several mobile applications can be incredibly useful. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is essential for finding your way around the city and estimating travel times. For booking transportation, Traveloka is your go-to platform for flights and hotels, and it also offers options for booking attractions. For local food delivery or finding restaurants, apps like GrabFood (if available in the area) can be helpful.

Additionally, a translation app can be useful if you plan to venture into more rural areas where English might be less commonly spoken, though in CDO itself, English is widely understood. Staying informed and prepared will allow you to fully enjoy the warmth and adventure that Cagayan de Oro City has to offer.

This hotel is good value for your money. If you only need a place to spend the night, this is the place to be. It has good selection of movies, good working AC, location is near the Cogon market and accessible to public transportation. I was told that this is barely 4 year old property and it is showing in their rooms, bathroom and appliances. Their staff are very friendly and attentive to our needs. Otherwise, the rooms are very small, there is no restaurant or convenience store. This is recommended to single or couple travelers but not to families with children.

While we stay at the G-Galyx InnHotel, was not that great. We were greeted as we approach the front desk. But they were not able to find the booking I've made through Traveloka at it took a while before we were able to check in the hotel and given keys for our room. We were lucky to get the same room we had before but this time there were no towels at the room and it was given very late in the evening. I have to call the staff at the front desk to remind them of the bathing towels that are not yet provided/prepared for us. after talking with the staff, it took again almost 30 minutes to receive them. The room was clean but the floor is dusty or have some dust on it. The power outlet in the room is not well-maintained that it can be very dangerous for the guest especially for the children. The elevator was working at the time we booked the hotel. They still don't have any intercom inside the room so you have to go outside the room and go near the elevator to call the front desk for assistance. The hotel have a spacious parking space.

Location wise, it's near to perfection as it is situated near shopping malls in the downtown. Cleanliness is also okay. Staff is friendly and rooms are affordable.

l find the aircon noisy and there's no tissue and shampoo inside. Also, the personnel assigned in the front desk seemed to be not happy and approachable.

It is good and cheap hotel/ inn. The location was great as it was situated near to the malls and even to the public market. However, we have issue on our booking, we were placed in a compact dormitory (good for 7) instead of 2 compact rooms (good for 3). Further, well, it is good that the toilet and bathroom were separated, but it do not have proper doors, only shower curtain. Air con cannot cool enough the room.

The room is good for backpackers. Just enough space for solo traveler and basic amenities were also included. You get what you pay, but nevertheless the whole experience was okay.

The place is near the market and malls. The building is new though the room has no window. Could have been more satisfied if the rate for extension is per hour or at least in increments of 4 hours as the guest need to extend til 6pm due to flight schedule from published check out time of 12nn.

Accommodating the staff, clean, right in back packers like me just waiting for the flight. For the savings is worth it. Safe, aircon is strong, wifi is very early in the morning. There's just no free toothpaste.

The paint of the walls on my room were dilapidated, they were literally falling apart. No flooring, only plain cement. No door on my comfort room and no exhaust vent to remove the stench. Not even a table and chair. Not that clean either. Dust were all over the windows. Grime were all over the comfort room. No phone for room service. No room service. However the staff were friendly.

G-Galyx was amazing. It had a nice facade/lobby featuring a "Herbie" designed Volkwagen that catches attention. Rooms were absolutely clean. I have no complaints whatsoever. Very reasonable rates for the kind of comfort and convenience that they provide. G-Galyx would be my first option the next time I visit CDO.
