Your Travel Guide to Panglao, Panglao Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Panglao, Panglao Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

The most convenient way to reach Panglao, Panglao Island from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Tagbilaran Airport (TAG) in Bohol serves as the primary gateway. Numerous airlines operate daily flights from Manila (MNL) to TAG, with travel times averaging around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly, but booking in advance through platforms like Traveloka can help secure cheaper flights, with prices sometimes starting from PHP 2,500 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip during off-peak seasons.

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, such as Cebu or Iloilo, flights to Tagbilaran are also available. Alternatively, ferry services connect Bohol to other islands, most notably from Cebu City to Tagbilaran Seaport. Ferry trips can take approximately 2 to 4 hours, depending on the vessel and route. While generally more time-consuming than flying, ferry travel can be a more budget-friendly option, with ticket prices ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500.

If you prefer to drive, it's possible to reach Bohol by car, but this involves a combination of driving and taking a car ferry. From Luzon, you would drive south to a port like Batangas and take a ferry to Visayas, then continue driving to a port like Cebu to catch a car ferry to Bohol. This is a long and complex journey, typically spanning several days, and involves significant costs for fuel, accommodation, and ferry fees. For most travelers, flying is the most practical choice.

Best Time to Visit Panglao, Panglao Island

Panglao Island, Bohol enjoys a tropical climate year-round, making it a popular destination for Filipinos seeking sun and sea. The dry season, generally from December to May, is considered the peak tourist period. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, lower humidity, and calm seas, which are ideal for beach activities, island hopping, and diving. Temperatures typically range from 28°C to 32°C.

The wet season runs from June to November. While this period sees more rainfall, it doesn't usually mean continuous downpours. Often, the rain comes in short, intense bursts, usually in the afternoon, followed by sunshine. This season offers fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. The lush greenery also adds to the island's beauty during this time.

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as late May to early June or late November to early December. These periods often provide pleasant weather without the peak season influx. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Panglao offers a unique island experience that appeals to many Filipino travelers looking for a tropical escape.

Food and Dining Near Panglao, Panglao Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Bohol is complete without savoring Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh, raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. The tangy and spicy flavors are incredibly refreshing, especially in the tropical heat. You can find excellent Kinilaw at local eateries and even at some of the more established restaurants around Panglao.

Another local delicacy to try is Grilled Liempo, marinated pork belly grilled to perfection. The smoky aroma and the savory, slightly sweet taste of the tender pork make it a favorite among Filipinos. Many roadside stalls and small carinderias offer this dish, often served with a side of soy sauce and calamansi dip. It’s a simple yet satisfying meal that captures the essence of Filipino barbecue.

For seafood lovers, fresh grilled fish and squid are abundant in Panglao. Many beachfront restaurants offer a selection of the day's catch, which you can choose and have grilled to your liking. The natural sweetness of the seafood, enhanced by a simple marinade and the smoky char from the grill, is a true delight. Pair it with steamed rice and a side of ensaladang talong (eggplant salad) for a complete meal.

Don't forget to try the local delicacies like Kalamay, a sweet, sticky rice dessert cooked with coconut milk and sugar, often served in a coconut shell. It’s a popular pasalubong (souvenir) item. For a healthier option, seek out fresh tropical fruits like mangoes, bananas, and papayas, which are readily available and incredibly sweet and juicy in Bohol.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Panglao, Panglao Island

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and Boholanos are no exception. A common local custom is "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority, showing respect. When visiting churches or local homes, it's customary to dress modestly. Understanding and respecting these local traditions will enhance your interactions and overall experience in Panglao.

Safety in Panglao is generally good, but like any tourist destination, it's wise to take precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and secure your valuables. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, the local police can be reached at their hotline numbers, which are usually posted in public areas or can be found online. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your accommodation readily available.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. Ride-hailing apps or local transport apps can be useful for booking rides, though in Panglao, tricycles and habal-habal (motorcycle taxis) are common for shorter distances. A currency converter app can help with managing your budget, and a translation app might be handy if you encounter situations where communication is a barrier.

Happy and satisfied customer here. The receptionist is very friendly and helpful. Our Tulip Room is perfect for our 4 days stay. It's clean and they also provided rice cooker, mini ref and kettle which you can save money if you don't want to eat outside. Location is ok, near airport, alona and white beach and convenience store. Will definitely stay here again in the future😄 Just a suggestion: maybe they can offer a habal habal ride from airport to Gaes apartment vice versa to save money. Since I think it's not practical to rent a car for 400 pesos for a less 10 minutes ride. Which I know a marketing strategy inait Panglao Airport. But yeah I think they can try it and base on experience Habal habal Is allowed to enter Panglao Airport.

We booked a family room in Gaea's apartments for 3 nights. It was a great stay since it was like a real home during our vacation. Their kitchen is complete with everything you need for cooking, they also had a complementary drinking water (whole water jug). Gaea's location is also good since it is just 10 mins away fr Panglao airport and you can ride habal habal going to the beach (Alona Beach) which is also 10 mins drive. Their place is clean and neat. Highly recommended if you are travelling with your family!

The place is quiet, clean, and feels private. We rented a family room that has its own ref, sink, plates, utensils, towels, shampoos. The water pressure in the shower was abyssmal tho. They allowed us to check out late (3pm). You can park your own or rented car here without any problem.

We stayed here for 4 nights Its affordable considering we were group of 8 pax, big living room, with sofa, tv, kitchen, laundry and dining. A Private place only for us that no one is going to disturb you. Though the restroom is quite not good due to the water in the shower is low, bidet is not working and toiletries are good only for 1 use. Better to buy or bring your own. The receptionist was accommodating, that she provided us free gallon of water, you can refill it for 30 pesos, provided us electric fan for the sala. Unfortunately during our stay there were lots of mosquitoes and flies. You should have insect repellent. The location is near in Dumaluan beach (white fine sand) its approx 20mins walking, 5 mins if riding in tricycle. its also near in grocery store and restaurants but quite expensive so better to cook on your own. Ride in the tricycle if you want to go to public market however selling meat is only during Saturdays, fish and vegetables are available the rest of the days and during afternoon. You can also rent a motorcycle just right beside Gaea’s apartment for 500 pesos good for 24 hours.

We got to their place at around 10am and their manager Lolit was nice enough to allow us to check in early without any fee. I like how the place comes with all the basic amenities. However, I wish they can provide thicker blankets and update their electric stove. We’ve tried 2 electric stoves and both took a lot of time before they started heating up. The place is also situated close to the Dumuluan Beach. It's relatively near if you have your own transport but if you have non, its quite costly to get a tricycle to take you to the beach. So make sure you’ve got your own transport because taking a walk to the beach is an option but can be difficult if you have kids or if you have a lot of items to bring.

Hello! Gaea's Apartment. :) Good Afternoon ! Me and my husband stayed in your Apartment for 2 days. I am thankful because the place is so relaxing, yet very affordable one. It it nice because we can cook anything we want, free wife, with air conditioned room. It is very accessible from that Panglao, Airport. We ride tricycle and paid minimal amount:) Thanks also for very accommodating receptionist. Thank you and God Bless!

Location-wise, the apartments is strategic since it is near the main road, beside restaurants and a 15-min walk to the Panglao sea shore. I booked a family room good for 6 pax. The room is complete for a night's stay - with tv, kitchenware, towels, clean bunk beds and cr. Great stay, worth the money.
