All pool staff were on their cell phones and was not very helpful. They locked both pool access doors in the hotel and forced guests to go through the main lobby which is on the other side of the compound.

Your Travel Guide to Zamboanga as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Zamboanga from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common and efficient way to reach Zamboanga from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Zamboanga International Airport (ZAM). From Manila, flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options are often available.

For travelers coming from nearby regions in Mindanao, bus travel is also an option, though it can be significantly longer. Routes connect Zamboanga to cities like Davao and General Santos, with travel times potentially spanning over 12 hours. Bus fares are generally more economical than flights, making it a choice for those prioritizing cost savings and with more flexible travel schedules.

Driving to Zamboanga is feasible for those undertaking a road trip across Mindanao. The journey involves navigating national highways and can take multiple days, depending on your starting point. While this offers the most freedom for exploration, it requires careful planning regarding routes, rest stops, and potential road conditions. Toll fees will also add to the overall cost.

Best Time to Visit Zamboanga

Zamboanga City enjoys a tropical climate year-round, meaning you can expect warm temperatures and humidity regardless of when you visit. The dry season, generally from November to May, is often considered the most favorable time for tourism, as it offers more sunshine and less rainfall, ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions.

The wet season typically runs from June to October, during which you might encounter more frequent rain showers. However, these are often brief and followed by sunshine. Visiting during the shoulder months or even the wet season can mean fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, offering a different kind of travel experience. It's always wise to check the weather forecast closer to your travel dates.

Food and Dining Near Zamboanga — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Zamboanga is complete without sampling its unique culinary heritage, heavily influenced by its Malay and Spanish roots. A must-try is the Curacha, a local delicacy that resembles a cross between a crab and a lobster, often steamed or fried and served with a rich sauce. You can find fresh Curacha at seafood restaurants around the city, particularly those near the coast.

Another local favorite is the Satti, a dish consisting of grilled beef or chicken skewers served with a flavorful, spicy peanut sauce and accompanied by puso (hanging rice). The aroma and taste of Satti are distinctive, and it's a popular breakfast or snack item. Look for small eateries or street food stalls that specialize in Satti for an authentic experience.

Seafood is abundant and exceptionally fresh in Zamboanga. Beyond Curacha, enjoy grilled fish, prawns, and other marine delights prepared in various styles. Many restaurants offer daily catches, allowing you to savor the ocean's bounty. Exploring the local markets can also lead you to discover fresh ingredients and local preparations.

For those with a sweet tooth, try the local pastries and desserts. While specific names might vary, look for items made with local fruits and ingredients. The influence of Spanish cuisine is also evident in some of the sweet treats available. Exploring local bakeries and cafes can reveal these hidden culinary gems.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Zamboanga

Zamboanga is known for its rich cultural tapestry, a blend of indigenous, Malay, and Spanish influences. The local language is Chavacano, a Spanish-based creole, though Tagalog and English are widely understood. Respecting local customs, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites and being polite in interactions, is always appreciated. The city is generally welcoming to visitors.

When it comes to safety, like any urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items unnecessarily. It's recommended to use reputable transportation services and stick to well-lit and populated areas, particularly at night. For emergencies, know the local police hotline numbers.

For seamless travel, consider downloading essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-sharing apps or local transport apps can help you find convenient ways to travel within the city. Communication apps like WhatsApp are useful for staying in touch with family and friends back home.

Familiarize yourself with basic Chavacano phrases if possible; locals often appreciate the effort. Understanding the local context and being prepared can significantly enhance your experience. Always trust your instincts and if you feel uncomfortable in any situation, seek assistance from hotel staff or local authorities.

A lot of mosquitos in the bar area- they opened it for extra seating. Also, when the hotel was busy, they closed the kitchen. So no ordering of food was available. Unfortunately, my son was sick at that time and i was really inconvenient. It was for one and a half day. Although the staff actually allowed me to order chicken and rice cause i explained about my son being sick. The staff was wonderful!

Rooms are falling apart, 1 pillow provided for each guest, no hand towels for the bathroom, you literally have to slam the bathroom door several times to get it to close, shower handle looks like its about come off, The only hotel we ever stayed in with 99% of staff looking miserable, no smile , greeting or acknowledgement not even for hotel guests. Too many hidden charges, the only hotel with visiting hours. Definitiely not worth your money, the worst hotel our family have ever stayed in!

The Garden Orchid has steadily declined in quality over the last five years without reducing prices. It is now barely a 1-star hotel at 4-star prices. I was in the old wing, and woke up at night to find my bed infested with ants and my body bitten all over. The toilet was sluggish at best and the pillows were like rocks. I have stayed there frequently in the past, but I will never stay there again.

I have mixed feelings about this property. While it has some positive aspects, there are several drawbacks that made my stay less enjoyable. The hotel feels quite dated, and accessibility is a challenge. To reach my room, I had to walk quite a bit and take stairs. Some of my team members stayed in another section of the hotel without an elevator, forcing them to climb multiple stairs. The in-room amenities were also disappointing. The safe did not work, the internet connection was very weak, and the shower lacked proper water pressure, with lukewarm water and no handle for easy adjustment. That being said, there are some redeeming qualities. The rooms are spacious and offer nice views. Contrary to some reviews I had read, I found that there were plenty of restaurants and convenience stores nearby. Most importantly, the hotel staff was genuinely attentive and cared about the guests. Overall, while the hotel has potential, it seems like a large property that was not built with convenience and functionality in mind. With some upgrades and better infrastructure, it could be a much better experience.

The hotel is clean, good AC and service great. Negatives: pool full on weekends with brunch buffet for families general admission Wifi unusable. It is an acceptable place but being the priciest in Zamboanga expected better.

No breakfast and the front wide open. I’m not sure if there’s a security at night

I love the junior suite and the attention given by housekeeping. Although a bit of a walk and isolated, the clean and spacious room is the reward.

All pool staff were on their cell phones and was not very helpful. They locked both pool access doors in the hotel and forced guests to go through the main lobby which is on the other side of the compound.
