Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular route for many Filipinos seeking cooler climes. The most common way is by bus, with numerous companies operating daily trips. Expect bus fares to range from PHP 500 to PHP 900, depending on the bus line and type of service (e.g., regular or executive). The journey typically takes between 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic conditions, especially when exiting Metro Manila.

For those looking for faster travel, consider flying into Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga. From Clark, you can take a direct bus or van service to Baguio, which usually takes around 3 to 4 hours. While there are no direct flights to Baguio's own Loakan Airport for commercial passenger flights, flying to Clark is a viable option. You can book flight tickets to CRK through Traveloka for competitive rates.

Driving your own vehicle is another option, offering flexibility. The primary routes involve the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), leading to the Jose Abad Santos Avenue and then the scenic MacArthur Highway towards Baguio. Toll fees can add up, so factor this into your budget. The drive offers beautiful countryside views as you ascend into the Cordillera region.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a generally cool climate year-round, but the best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with cooler temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The peak tourist season falls between December and February, coinciding with Christmas holidays and the Panagbenga Festival.

The months of November and March to May offer a good balance, with pleasant weather and potentially fewer crowds compared to the absolute peak holiday weeks. If you prefer a quieter visit, consider the shoulder months. The rainy season, from June to October, brings frequent rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy and may disrupt outdoor plans, though it also means fewer tourists and lush green scenery.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Baguio is complete without indulging in its unique culinary offerings. A must-try is the Baguio Strawberry, famously grown in the region. Enjoy fresh strawberries, strawberry taho (silken tofu with syrup and sago pearls), and strawberry ice cream. You can find these treats in local markets and specialty shops throughout the city.

Another local delicacy is the Ube Kinampay, a purple yam jam that is rich and flavorful. It's often used in desserts and pastries, offering a distinct taste of the Cordilleras. Look for homemade versions or products sold in souvenir shops for an authentic taste of this regional specialty.

For a savory experience, try Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish. It involves a unique preparation method where the meat is lightly beaten to tenderize it and enhance its flavor before cooking. It's often cooked with etag (smoked pork) and vegetables, offering a hearty and distinct taste that reflects the local culture.

Don't forget to sample the local coffee. Baguio and the surrounding Benguet province are known for producing high-quality Arabica coffee beans. Enjoying a freshly brewed cup at a local café is a perfect way to warm up on a cool Baguio morning or afternoon.

I was expecting a hotel room as advertised. I was given a different place, a townhouse unit with a broken screendoor, defective hot water service, 2 cockroaches in the bathroom and a stinking drainage. I booked 2 rooms for two families. Two different booking numbers. When we arrived on the day, we were led to the townhouse unit and said that all of us would be staying in the same unit! Until I insisted that I booked for two separate rooms that they started looking for another unit for us. We were asked to wait for an hour as another room has just been vacated and cleaning was just being done! How did you arrive at a rating of 9.4 for this?
