Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers looking to reach Manila from other major cities within the Philippines, several convenient options are available. Air travel remains the most popular and fastest method. Major airlines operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from key hubs like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Oro. Flight durations typically range from 1 to 2 hours, with fares varying based on booking time and airline, but you can often find competitive prices if you book in advance through platforms like Traveloka.

If you prefer a more economical journey or are traveling from nearby provinces, bus travel is a viable alternative. Numerous bus companies ply routes to Manila's various terminals from Luzon's northern and southern regions. While journeys can be longer, often spanning several hours, they offer a chance to see more of the country. Fares are generally much lower than air travel, making it a budget-friendly option for many.

For those who enjoy road trips or are traveling from closer provinces, driving your own vehicle or renting one is also an option. Manila is accessible via a network of expressways and national highways. However, be prepared for significant traffic, especially as you approach the metropolitan area. Planning your route and departure time carefully is essential to minimize travel time and stress. Regardless of your chosen mode of transport, booking your book flight or bus tickets in advance can often secure better rates and ensure availability.

Best Time to Visit Manila

Manila experiences a tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The city has two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season typically runs from December to May, with temperatures often ranging from 25°C to 35°C. This period, particularly from December to February, is often considered the most pleasant time to visit, as the weather is generally sunny and less humid, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and sightseeing.

The wet season, from June to November, brings with it higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours or typhoons. While this season can be more challenging for outdoor activities, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. If you don't mind occasional rain showers and are looking for a more budget-friendly trip, visiting during the shoulder months of the wet season, like June or November, can still be enjoyable.

For Filipino travelers, understanding these seasonal patterns helps in planning a trip that aligns with personal preferences for weather and crowd levels. Whether you prefer the drier, sunnier months or don't mind the occasional rain, Manila offers experiences year-round. Consider your priorities when choosing your travel dates to make the most of your visit to the capital.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila is a culinary melting pot, offering a vast array of flavors that reflect its rich history and diverse influences. For any Filipino traveler, exploring the local food scene is an essential part of the experience. One dish that stands out is Adobo, often considered the unofficial national dish. Its savory and tangy profile, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a comforting and familiar taste for many.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, beef, fish, or shrimp. The distinct sourness, usually derived from tamarind, is incredibly refreshing and pairs perfectly with steamed rice. The variety of ingredients and the comforting warmth of the soup make it a beloved staple across the Philippines.

For those seeking something a bit more adventurous, Lechon, a whole roasted pig with incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat, is a celebratory dish that's worth seeking out. While often reserved for special occasions, many restaurants offer lechon portions for everyday enjoyment. The rich, savory flavor and the textural contrast of the skin and meat are truly remarkable.

Don't leave Manila without trying Halo-Halo, the ultimate Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream is a delightful way to cool down and satisfy your sweet cravings. It’s a perfect representation of the Filipino palate’s love for sweet, creamy, and diverse textures. Exploring these dishes will give you a true taste of Filipino culinary heritage.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Understanding local customs can greatly enhance your experience in Manila. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality and politeness. Using "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority is a sign of respect. When visiting churches or other religious sites, dress modestly. It's also common for Filipinos to invite guests into their homes, and accepting such invitations is a gesture of goodwill.

When it comes to safety, like any large city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas like markets or public transportation. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's also advisable to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps for transportation. In case of emergencies, knowing key contact numbers is important. The national emergency hotline is 911.

For navigating Manila and staying connected, several apps can be very useful. Google Maps is indispensable for directions and traffic updates. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are widely used for convenient and relatively safe transportation. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are popular choices among Filipinos. Having these apps on your smartphone can significantly streamline your travel experience and help you stay connected with ease.

The location is good and very accessible to places that I wanted to visit. However, the first night I stayed there is not so good because the room that was given to me smells bad and the blanket stinks. I thought I would be able to sleep even though the ambiance was not good but I was not. On the second day, they have already changed it and cleaned the room. That's the only time when I was able to sleep better.

The smell of the room that was provided to us is not great. We have two beds but we end up using only one because the aircon is showering some mist on the other bed.

Room is dusty , while sleeping I was bitten by mosquitos mites etc. So uncomfortable.First time I experienced in a hotel. I would categorize it Inn or lodging not a hotel. Lights are dark. Remote are not working. Disgusting

My room was clean, size is average, everything in the room is working. Employees were accommodating. I would love to stay there again.

The hotel is in a strategic location and the breakfast served to me is acceptable. Unfortunately though, the night I was there, my sleep was disturbed by loud voices coming from either the lower floor or the nearby room

Nice place. Located at center of Malate, Manila. Maintenance is not quite good especially at the comfort room where the toilet get clogged.

The hotel is near the intramuros, the rooms are small but okay, cleanliness 6.5, there is a deposit per room of 500 pesos, the staff is helpful, breakfast is for a menu / side dish per plate but rice can be taken free.

Food is affordable. Staff were accommodating. The place is accessible to malls, and places in the city. Rooms were clean and comfy.

It's okay. But they should inform guest that there’s no cellphone signal inside the building online or upon check in. The room was okay but kinda have a poor light. The aura is kinda sad inside the room

Our stay is good. But the receptionist should be more accommodating and approachable.
