this is my first visit to Iloilo we are here to meet and greet the family and friends. we did [mistakenly]stay at bearland a few days as it was "supposed" to be a resort. [i will review that place later - 1] after looking around we settle into the GT as this is a business type hotel and the service, food and cleanliness are extra good and I do enjoy this much better than Manila

Your Travel Guide to Iloilo City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Iloilo City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Iloilo City from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Iloilo Gateway Airport (formerly Iloilo International Airport). Flights from Manila typically take around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but expect prices to range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip if booked strategically.

For travelers on a tighter budget or those who prefer a scenic journey, bus travel is an option, though it is considerably longer. Buses depart from major terminals in Metro Manila, such as Cubao and Pasay, heading to Iloilo City. The trip involves a ferry crossing and can take anywhere from 18 to 24 hours. Bus fares typically range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500, depending on the bus company and class of service.

Driving to Iloilo City is also possible for those coming from nearby provinces in Panay Island or even from Luzon, though it's a long drive. The journey from Manila would involve driving south through Luzon, taking a ferry to Panay Island, and then driving to Iloilo City. This route requires careful planning regarding ferry schedules and accommodation along the way. Toll fees and fuel costs should be factored into the budget.

Best Time to Visit Iloilo City

The best time to visit Iloilo City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower chances of rain, making it ideal for exploring the city's attractions and enjoying outdoor activities. The weather is typically pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius.

The period between December and February is particularly popular due to cooler temperatures and festive holiday vibes. However, this is also peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodation. If you prefer fewer crowds and more budget-friendly options, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or March to May.

The wet season, from June to October, brings more frequent rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy. While this period might see fewer tourists and lower prices, outdoor activities and island hopping might be affected by weather conditions. However, if you don't mind occasional rain showers and are looking for a more tranquil experience, the wet season can still be a good time to visit.

Food and Dining Near Iloilo City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Iloilo is renowned as the "Food Capital of the Philippines," and a visit wouldn't be complete without sampling its culinary delights. One absolute must-try is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork, shrimp, and vegetables, known for its rich and savory broth. You can find excellent versions at various local eateries, with some of the most famous spots located in the La Paz district.

Another Ilonggo specialty is KBL, which stands for Kadyos, Baboy, at Langka. This unique dish features pigeon peas, pork, and young jackfruit stewed in a flavorful broth, often with a hint of sourness from batuan fruit. It’s a comforting and distinctively Ilonggo dish that offers a taste of authentic local cuisine.

For seafood lovers, Iloilo offers an abundance of fresh catches. Grilled seafood, like tanigue (mackerel) or bangus (milkfish), is a popular choice, often served with soy sauce, calamansi, and chili. Many restaurants along the coast and within the city serve these delicious preparations.

Don't leave Iloilo without trying Pancit Molo, a savory soup dumpling dish. Unlike other pancit variations, this one features delicate dumplings filled with ground pork, served in a rich chicken broth. It’s a comforting and flavorful dish that showcases the refined culinary heritage of the region.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Iloilo City

Ilonggos are known for their gentle demeanor and polite way of speaking, often using "po" and "opo" in conversations. It's appreciated if visitors show similar respect. When visiting churches or other religious sites, dress modestly out of respect for the sacredness of the place.

Safety in Iloilo City is generally good, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your belongings secure, especially in crowded places like markets or public transport. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911.

It's helpful to have a reliable map application on your phone, such as Google Maps, to navigate the city. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are also available and widely used for convenient transportation. For local information and updates, consider downloading the official tourism app for Iloilo if available.

Learning a few basic Hiligaynon phrases can enhance your interactions with locals, though English and Tagalog are widely understood. Simple greetings like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) can go a long way in fostering a friendly connection.

Hotel policy for travelers is not good at all. We arrived at the hotel 1:30am asking if we could do early check in just to freshen up and we are going to leave at 4am and be back at 6-7pm. The front desk allowed us but we have to pay 200/hr up to 2pm on the (next day) even if we have to use the room for only 2hrs, meaning additional 1 day to booking. Room was ok, seen a small cockroach on the restroom. Wifi connection only works at the restaurant. Food was ok.

Front desk service wasn't that nice, busy with his phone. You have to deposit money on almost everything you request, like extra card keys, early check-in. The room was generally okay, wasn't as clean as the room I stayed here last year. The breakfast wasn't that nice also.

Location is perfect, it's very convenient to go around the city via jeepney. Perfect for solo travellers who would prefer to ride public transport. Breakfast is buffet but the options are limited. My only issue is the wifi signal because it doesn't reach my room. They should make sure all rooms are covered by the router.

Old hotel. Old AC makes a lot of noise. Breakfast is not buffet. Only one juice per order, no taste

The staff are kind and welcoming. But the hotel is a bit old and need some renovations. Our room is not very clean and noticed a lot dead ants on the table. But the price isn't bad at all.

2-day stay at this hotel was pleasant. it is near rob iloilo and sta. teresita del ñino jesus parish. no problem with transportation. we love their faucet and shower since both hot and cold options are working perfectly fine. our accommodation came with breakfast buffet however, don't expect too much. overall, it was a great stay

The hotel is perfect. Clean and very comfortable to stay. Close to robinson and the only thing I didn't like was his friendly staff who couldn't smile to welcome the guest. It's stuck.

Buffet breakfast is love. Try their Brazo de Mercedes cake sloce and pair it with brewed coffee - so heavenly! This hotel is located downtown old iloilo and near robinsons mall.

Hotel staff were not service oriented. They are so slow in their actions, they are not snappy.
