Your Travel Guide to Cagayan de Oro City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cagayan de Oro City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

Traveling to Cagayan de Oro City from Manila is most efficiently done by air. Major airlines operate daily flights to Laguindingan Airport (CGY), which serves Cagayan de Oro. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for as low as PHP 2,000 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip if booked strategically. Remember to book your flight early for the best deals.

For those preferring land travel or coming from other parts of Mindanao or the Visayas, bus services are available. Buses from major cities like Davao or Cebu (via ferry to Cagayan de Oro port) offer a more economical, albeit longer, journey. Bus fares from Manila can range from PHP 2,500 to PHP 4,000, with travel times exceeding 24 hours. This option is best suited for travelers with ample time and a desire to see more of the country en route.

Driving to Cagayan de Oro City is also an option for those who enjoy road trips. The city is accessible via the Pan-Philippine Highway. From Manila, this would involve a significant journey, likely requiring overnight stops. Toll fees will add to the overall cost, and it's essential to plan your route carefully, considering fuel consumption and potential road conditions, especially in more remote areas.

Best Time to Visit Cagayan de Oro City

Cagayan de Oro City experiences a tropical climate, with generally warm temperatures year-round. The dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the most favorable time to visit for outdoor activities, including the famous whitewater rafting. During these months, you can expect less rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the city and its natural attractions.

The wet season runs from June to October, and while there can be occasional heavy downpours, these often come in short bursts, usually in the afternoon. This period can also be a good time to visit if you're looking for fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. However, it's always wise to check weather forecasts closer to your travel dates, as typhoons can occasionally affect the region.

For an optimal experience, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or February to May. These periods often offer a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Cagayan de Oro City offers a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of activities for every type of traveler.

Food and Dining Near Cagayan de Oro City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Cagayan de Oro is complete without indulging in its culinary offerings. A local favorite is the Kinilaw, a Filipino ceviche made with fresh raw fish (often tanigue or tuna) marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the local flavors, and you can find excellent versions in many local eateries and restaurants.

Another must-try dish is the Sinuglaw, a delightful fusion of sinugba (grilled pork belly) and kinilaw. The smoky flavor of the grilled pork combined with the tangy, spicy marinade of the kinilaw creates a complex and satisfying taste profile. Many restaurants in CDO proudly feature this dish on their menus, showcasing the city's innovative approach to traditional Filipino cuisine.

For those with a sweet tooth, try the Pastel de Leche, a soft, sweet bun filled with creamy custard. This delicacy is particularly famous from the nearby Camiguin Island but is widely available and enjoyed in Cagayan de Oro. It’s a perfect treat to have with coffee or as a dessert after a savory meal. You can often find these at local bakeries and pasalubong centers.

Don't leave Cagayan de Oro without sampling their local version of grilled seafood and meats. The city is known for its barbecue, with many roadside stalls and restaurants offering succulent, perfectly marinated skewers. Whether it's pork liempo, chicken inasal, or fresh fish, the smoky aroma and savory taste are characteristic of the region's love for grilled food.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cagayan de Oro City

Hello. I recommend this hotel. Cheap, near the terminal to Camiguin and back to the airport. Walking distance to Gaisano and Centrio Mall. No matter how beautiful the bedroom can sleep, it is very soft because of the softness of the pillow. Aircon cooling is done with wifi more. It's hard to stay here.

The room given to me was acceptable considering the price. The room looks old and the lighting is poor. The air conditioner is leaking and the water drops on the floor. The TV is very old as well with poor receptio. They have wifi I think but I didn’t try to connect. It didn’t have an outlet on the bedside which is inconvenient when you're using ur phone or laptop. The only thing that’s great is the location since all major malls are just a few minutes walk.

The Aircon is non-adjustable, the TV cable is not clear, the pail placed in the CR was a trash can. Most importantly, the water was unavailable during the stay.

It was fine because I slept pretty well. WiFi is great, however, the ladies at the front desk are not approachable-I came from a very long trip, arrived in the hotel 2 pm and these two young women just said me to wait because the room were cleaned by the staffs. like, seriously? 2pm is the check in, I went to my room around 3pm, sobrang tagal lng nman nang front desk mag assist, they keep on talking.

I stayed in room 531, signal is really bad, my husband can't contact me. No phone extension in the room. I wasn't able to sleep the whole night, there were guys kept on laughing loud, talking so loud and kept on banging their doors the whole night. I was so scared to go outside. I won't recommend this hotel to my friends and family I think this hotel is not secure.

Nice accommodation simple and affordable and it's near the commercial area. The only problem is the wifi we tried to connect but no internet. The security guard was satisfactory in customer service the staff, not so. They need phones also in every floors.

Standard single room was not so clean. Water coming from faucet was brown. No hot and cold and the aircond doesn't have any options.

I went there early of march 18 and I want to change my room since my payed room is still occupied but I end up paying again for another room so that I can sleep and rest from my long flight. The receptionist don't even help or recommend me to solve my problem.
