Your Travel Guide to Davao City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Davao City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most travelers coming from Manila and other major Philippine cities, flying is the most efficient way to reach Davao City. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget airlines often offer fares starting from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip if booked in advance.

If you prefer land travel or are coming from nearby Mindanao cities, bus services are available. Buses depart from various terminals in major cities like Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, and even Manila (though this is a very long journey). From Manila, a bus trip can take over 24 hours and typically costs between PHP 2,000 to PHP 3,500. Buses from closer cities like General Santos might take 4-6 hours and cost around PHP 500-800. These options are more time-consuming but can be more economical for those not in a hurry.

Driving to Davao City is also an option for those who enjoy road trips, particularly from other parts of Mindanao. The journey involves navigating national highways and can take many hours, depending on your starting point. For example, driving from Cagayan de Oro might take around 8-10 hours. Toll fees will apply along certain routes. This method offers flexibility but requires careful planning regarding rest stops and fuel.

Best Time to Visit Davao City

Davao City enjoys a tropical climate year-round, meaning you can expect warm temperatures and humidity regardless of when you visit. The city does not experience a distinct dry or wet season in the same way as some other parts of the Philippines, due to its location outside the typhoon belt. However, rainfall is generally more frequent from June to October. For travelers who prefer drier weather for outdoor activities, the months from November to May tend to be more favorable, with less chance of heavy downpours.

The peak tourist season often coincides with major holidays like Christmas, New Year, and the Kadayawan Festival, which is celebrated every August. During these times, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. For those seeking a more relaxed visit and potentially better rates, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons or the months with generally less rain, such as February to April. Regardless of the season, always pack light clothing, sunscreen, and an umbrella for unpredictable showers.

Food and Dining Near Davao City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Davao City is a culinary delight, offering a range of flavors that reflect its diverse culture. One must-try is the Durian, the "King of Fruits," known for its pungent aroma and creamy texture. While polarizing, trying it is a characteristic Davao experience. You can find fresh durian at local markets like Bankerohan Public Market, which is conveniently located near GV Hotel Davao. Many stalls offer samples, allowing you to taste before you buy.

Another local specialty is the Kinilaw na Malasugi, a Davao-style ceviche made with fresh swordfish or other local fish, marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, ginger, onions, and chili. It's a refreshing and zesty dish perfect for the tropical climate. Many local restaurants and carinderias serve this dish, offering a taste of authentic Mindanaoan seafood preparation. Look for establishments that pride themselves on fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

For those who enjoy grilled dishes, the local barbecue scene in Davao is noteworthy. You can find various types of marinated meats, seafood, and even vegetables grilled to perfection. Many eateries offer platters that allow you to sample a variety of grilled items. Consider exploring the local eateries around the Poblacion area for authentic and affordable barbecue options. These often provide a more casual and local dining atmosphere.

Don't leave Davao without trying their local delicacies, especially those made from bananas and coconuts, which are abundant in the region. From banana chips to various coconut-based desserts, these treats offer a sweet taste of Davao. You can find these snacks and sweets at local markets and souvenir shops. Exploring these local flavors is a key part of the travel experience for many Filipino visitors.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Davao City

Davao City is known for its generally peaceful environment and the politeness of its residents. The local culture emphasizes respect and community. When interacting with locals, a friendly demeanor and polite greetings go a long way. While Davao City is considered one of the safest major cities in the Philippines, it's always wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets or public transport terminals.

For safety, it's recommended to avoid displaying expensive items openly and to be cautious when walking alone late at night. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of your belongings. In case of emergencies, the local emergency hotline is typically 911, which is standard across many Philippine cities. Familiarizing yourself with the hotel's location and nearby landmarks can also help you navigate back easily.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around the city and checking distances to attractions. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab are also very useful for booking transportation, offering convenience and transparent pricing. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger to stay in touch with friends and family.

My request for 1 double was not responded to. The staff said they cannot view requests in their system. Really? I understand that all available rooms are two beds (no possibility for upgrades) but it would have been better that I was informed beforehand so expectations can be managed. There is no elevator and no one to assist you in carrying a heavy luggage up and down the stairs. There is no heater do you have to survive bathing in cold water. The water pipes are very, very visible in my room ' s ceiling. There is no TV, too. I booked for 3 days and checked out after the first night even if I have already paid in advance because staying there is just not worth it.

This accommodation is good for a 1-star hotel. The room was clean and space was enough. Receptionist at the lobby was polite. They also gave us free 6 bottles of water for 3 days. The only negative thing to note here is that the shower doesn't include hot water. But overall, this is a satisfactory budget hotel.

I was so disappointed😰 when we arrived at the lobby. The receptionist wasn't polite. When we went to our room. I am so terribly disappointed! I thought of a nice standard because of the name itself "HOTEL". But look at what we've got. This looks like a bodega. On top of the ceiling were pipes. The sound of the pipes were very annoying. It seems from the CR on top. And its just beside our tiny dining table. So Gross! I'll definitely not comeback.

The toilet is a bit dirty. No flush from toilet bowl. Towels are old. When you order breakfast food like coffee, boiled egg and toasted bread in the dining area, it will take 30 to 45 minutes. When we requested to clean the room, the housekeeping did not come.

Walking distance from the market where you can buy fresh fruit for pasalubong. Although kind of far from airport but if you can ask your vendor to help you find taxi, they will help you for shortcut. Will go back very soon

I booked for my parents and they hated the room, perhaps it was too small or the room given to them wasn't in good condition. They transferred to another hotel the very next day. Would not want to go back there myself.

So far, the hotel is clean. Unfortunately for 5 days / 4 nights, our room was not cleaned, rubbish was not lifted. there are days, can't order breakfast because there are no personnel in the kitchen he said.

No toiletries, no slippers, cockroach are everywhere, pillows are dirty I let the staff know and they changed it. Room 406 has only one outlet and very far from bed to charge phone. No hot shower.

The whole stay was great. Cheap rooms. But one thing I could recommend is that they need to put additional outlets. Thanks

We booked our room at 05:00pm, we arrived around 09:00pm. The room is not yet ready we were at the lobby for 30mins waiting. My point is we booked online why is it the room was not ready thought we arrived late. We, the guests are tired from travel expecting everything is okay and ready.

The toilet is a bit dirty. No flush from toilet bowl. Towels are old. When you order breakfast food like coffee, boiled egg and toasted bread in the dining area, it will take 30 to 45 minutes. When we requested to clean the room, the housekeeping did not come.
