Your Travel Guide to Tagbilaran City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Tagbilaran City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

The most convenient way to reach Tagbilaran City from Manila and other major Philippine hubs like Cebu or Davao is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Tagbilaran Airport (TAG). From Manila, expect flight durations of around 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares typically ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. You can easily book your flight on Traveloka for competitive rates.

For those looking for a more economical, albeit longer, journey, inter-island ferries are an option, particularly from Cebu. The ferry trip from Cebu City to Tagbilaran Port takes approximately 2 hours and costs around PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 for a standard economy ticket. This option allows you to enjoy the sea breeze and the vastness of the Philippine archipelago, though it requires more travel time compared to flying.

While driving is possible for those coming from nearby Visayan islands, it involves multiple ferry crossings and extensive road travel. For most Filipino travelers coming from Luzon or Mindanao, flying or taking a ferry remains the most practical and time-efficient methods to reach Tagbilaran City and begin their Bohol adventure.

Best Time to Visit Tagbilaran City

The dry season, from December to May, is generally considered the best time to visit Tagbilaran City and the rest of Bohol. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, which are ideal for island hopping tours, visiting the famous Chocolate Hills, and enjoying the pristine beaches of Panglao. The weather is typically pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C, making outdoor activities highly enjoyable.

However, the peak tourist season also falls within these months, especially from December to February and during the Holy Week in March or April. This means higher accommodation prices and more crowds at popular attractions. For travelers seeking a balance between good weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder months of March (excluding Holy Week) and April, or the early part of the dry season in December, can offer a more relaxed experience.

The wet season, from June to November, brings occasional rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy and prolonged. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower prices for flights and accommodation, it can disrupt outdoor activities and tours. However, the rain often comes in short bursts, and the lush green landscapes during this time are quite beautiful. If you don't mind the possibility of rain showers, visiting during the wet season can still be rewarding.

Food and Dining Near Tagbilaran City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Boholano cuisine offers a delightful array of flavors that reflect its island heritage. A must-try is the Kinilaw, a Filipino ceviche where fresh raw fish is "cooked" in vinegar, often with ginger, onions, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer, perfect for the tropical climate, and you can find excellent versions in local eateries around Tagbilaran.

Another local specialty is the Peanut Kisses, a sweet, crisp cookie shaped like the iconic Chocolate Hills. While technically a pasalubong (souvenir treat), trying these unique biscuits is a culinary experience in itself. Many local bakeries and souvenir shops sell them, offering a sweet taste of Bohol's most famous landmark.

For seafood lovers, grilled or steamed fresh catch is abundant. Tagbilaran City, being a coastal capital, offers a variety of fish, prawns, and squid. Look for local carinderias or restaurants that display their fresh seafood options, allowing you to pick your meal and have it prepared to your liking, often grilled to perfection with simple but flavorful marinades.

Don't forget to try the local delicacies like Kalamay, a sweet sticky rice dessert cooked in coconut milk and served in a coconut shell. It’s a rich and satisfying treat that embodies the tropical flavors of the Philippines. You can find this sweet delicacy in local markets and souvenir shops, offering a taste of traditional Boholano sweetness.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Tagbilaran City

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and Boholanos are no exception. When interacting with locals, always maintain a respectful demeanor. A simple "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or showing deference goes a long way. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service in restaurants or for tour guides.

Tagbilaran City is generally a safe place for travelers. However, like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or transport terminals. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the local police can be reached at 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact numbers for your hotel and any tour operators readily accessible.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around the city and the island. Ride-hailing apps or local transport apps can help you secure rides, though tricycles and taxis are common and can be hailed directly. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by locals and travelers alike.

Finally, having the Traveloka app on your phone is highly recommended. It allows you to easily manage your bookings, search for attractions, and even book last-minute accommodations or flights, ensuring you have all your travel needs covered in one convenient place.

The room was clean though the bed was placed unevenly and weirdly but comfortable. My bed was squeaky though. You definitely get what you paid for. It's in the downtown area and close to everything, accessible. The staffs are nice too.

The room we had wasn’t clean so we ask for another room. We lost our tumblers and the front desk just told us that one of their stuff brought it home and so we can’t get it back because the staff is on leave. Very bad experience!

My room was not sound-proofed. Aircond was so noisy upon maximum cool. Blanket was so thin. What you get is what you paid for so it's just an okay stay. Location is great. Near the seaport, bar, mall and local market. Staffs are great as well. Only the room was the downside.

Good customer service, we booked 2 rooms with queen sized bed but when we arrived, what they only offered is a room with queen sized bed and another room with twin beds. That is definitely not what we have booked but the front desk officer was able to explain to us, and we also have to be considerate. At first, I was thinking that they should have an elevator, but maybe it may not function well because of the power interruptions that may occur.

The room was clean though the bed was placed unevenly and weirdly but comfortable. My bed was squeaky though. You definitely get what you paid for. It's in the downtown area and close to everything, accessible. The staffs are nice too.

My stay was good enough considering it's the amount of money I paid.

It was a nice stay! Though I am not always in the hotel! But my sleep was comfortable. There is no hot and cold shower but the coldness of the water is bearable for me. Friendly staff.

Receptionist is very helpful. Spacious room. CR has strong bleach smell. Expect that there's no elevator. Has convenience store beside the building. Very near to Tagbilaran Airport and Tagbilaran Port. Walking distance to restaurants and other establishments.

The wifi and signal is very bad. There's literally no service for globe subscribers. And there was no towel when we got there

It's kind of near the Malls of the City, and for that you can easily look for food and what are the people love to eat. Also, its just a tricycle away from the airport. But their WiFi connection is bad.
