Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from Manila, the most convenient and fastest way to reach Cebu City is by air. Several major airlines, including Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia, operate frequent flights daily between Ninoy Franco International Airport (MNL) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Fares can vary significantly depending on the booking time and season, but you can typically expect prices to range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip if booked in advance. For the best deals, it's advisable to book flight tickets through platforms like Traveloka.

If you prefer land and sea travel, you can take a bus from Metro Manila to various ferry terminals in Luzon (like Batangas or Lucena) and then board a ferry to Cebu. This journey is considerably longer, often taking 20 to 36 hours, and involves multiple transfers. Bus fares to the ferry terminals can range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,200, while ferry tickets vary based on the class of service, typically from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000.

This option is best suited for those who enjoy long journeys and want to see more of the country along the way.

From Davao City, the primary mode of transport to Cebu City is also by air. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer direct flights from Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). The flight time is around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Similar to flights from Manila, expect fares to range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip, depending on booking timing.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from Davao to Cagayan de Oro or Butuan, and then catch a ferry to Cebu. This sea and land route is much longer, taking approximately 24-30 hours, with combined ticket prices potentially ranging from PHP 2,000 to PHP 3,500.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The dry season, typically from December to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny days with less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, island hopping, and exploring the city's historical sites. The weather is most pleasant from January to March. However, this is also when crowds are largest, and prices for accommodation and flights might be higher.

The wet season runs from June to November. While this period sees more frequent rain showers, they are often short and followed by sunshine. Traveling during the wet season can offer a more relaxed atmosphere with fewer tourists and potentially lower prices for travel and accommodation. It's a good time to visit if you're looking for a more budget-friendly trip or prefer a less crowded experience.

Regardless of the season, Cebu City offers a wealth of attractions and experiences for Filipino travelers.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu City is renowned as a culinary capital, and for Filipino travelers, exploring its food scene is a highlight. One dish you absolutely must try is Lechon Cebuano. Unlike lechon from other regions, Cebu's version is known for its incredibly crispy skin and flavorful, tender meat, often seasoned with a blend of herbs and spices directly inside the pig before roasting.

You can find excellent lechon at various establishments, from famous spots like CNT Lechon or Rico's Lechon to local eateries scattered throughout the city.

Another Cebuano specialty is Kinilaw na Tanigue. This is the local take on ceviche, featuring fresh, raw Spanish mackerel (tanigue) marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, chili, and calamansi. The acidity of the vinegar "cooks" the fish, resulting in a tangy, refreshing dish that perfectly complements the tropical climate. Many restaurants and even carinderias offer kinilaw, each with its subtle variations. It’s a perfect appetizer or light meal, especially when enjoyed with a side of steamed rice.

For seafood lovers, Grilled Tuna Panga is a must-try. These are the grilled jaw portions of tuna, often marinated in soy sauce, calamansi, and spices, then grilled over charcoal. The meat is rich, succulent, and has a unique texture. You can find these at seafood markets and restaurants, particularly those near the coast or specializing in grilled dishes. It’s a hearty and flavorful dish that showcases the abundance of fresh seafood available in the region.

Don't leave Cebu without trying Puto Maya and Sikwate. Puto Maya is a steamed rice cake, often served with a drizzle of condensed milk or grated coconut, and it's traditionally paired with hot chocolate, known locally as Sikwate. This combination is a popular breakfast or merienda treat. The slightly savory, sticky rice cake paired with the rich, slightly bitter chocolate is a comforting and distinctly Cebuano experience. Look for this at local markets or traditional breakfast spots.

Finally, for those with a sweet tooth, Masareal is a traditional Cebuano confection. It's a dense, sweet bar made from ground peanuts, sugar, and sometimes cornstarch, giving it a chewy texture. It’s a simple yet satisfying sweet treat that has been enjoyed for generations. You can often find these sold in local bakeries and pasalubong centers, making them an easy souvenir or personal indulgence.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is deeply rooted in Filipino traditions, with a strong sense of community and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a friendly demeanor and respectful attitude go a long way. It's common to use "po" and "opo" when addressing elders, showing respect. While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic Cebuano phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can be appreciated.

Be mindful of local customs, especially when visiting religious sites like the Basilica del Santo Niño, where modest dress is recommended.

When it comes to safety in Cebu City, it's generally safe for tourists, but like any urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas like markets and public transport. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's advisable to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps like Grab for transportation. Stick to well-lit and populated areas at night. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911.

For your convenience during your stay, several apps can be very useful. Grab is essential for booking rides and food delivery, making transportation and dining much easier. GCash and Maya are popular mobile wallets in the Philippines, useful for cashless transactions if you have them set up. Google Maps is invaluable for navigation, helping you find your way around the city and locate attractions.

Lastly, a translation app can be helpful if you encounter situations where communication is a barrier, though English is widely understood.

This isn't my first time coming here but this time around, I waited for more than an hour because the staff said their system needs to wait for the confirmation though I have booked hours prior to my arrival. I already have my voucher with me but they still won't allow me to check in, the waiting time is very long. Very unsatisfied with their service.

The good thing about this hotel is very budget friendly if you are on the tight budget this is the place for you. The beds are comfy. Unfortunately I don't really like the comfort rooms no bidet and the drainage is not good. Wifi is very slow.

First room conditions comparing to other hotel is not up to the standard At all no fridge tv didn’t work well even we have to pay deposit for the tv remote control which never happened as well there was no glass and we asked for 2 glass and again we have to pay deposit for it no one clean the room even and when we are checking out receptionist she is not paying attention to us telling me go and collect your deposit from the bar is really insulted and unpolite way since we are working in hospitality we never show this kind of attitude we really regret staying in that hotel and we will never recommend it to anyone

Thank you GV Tower Hotel for making our short vacation a comfortable one. Our room is clean, though the comfort room is a bit smaller in space, it's not a big deal for us anyway. Very accessible to the city proper and the bustling streets of Colon, that you can literally walk to the tourist spots like the Basilica de Sto. Niño, Fort San Pedro and the likes. I guess the only downside of this place is the very limited cable channel access of the television. nevertheless, the place is good and recommended to travelers/backpackers like us.

The receptionists are not hospitable, doesn't know to accommodate their guests properly, the lobby is warm during day time, they will just turn on the ac in the afternoon, the couch smells bad like molds. The internet connection is unstable, and next day your wifi connection will automatically cuts off. The ground lobby is much better because the guards are very pleasant and the area is cold, and our room is fine... so kindly fix this issue so that the next time we'll come back we don't experience this uncomfort and let your receptionist join seminar about hospitality, thank you.

I asked to change rooms because water drips from the AC. We transferred to a much better room - with city view, yet same scenario, the water from the AC still drips on the floor. We just ask the crews to clean it for us.

In terms of the accommodation towards their costumers are very well good and the room is tidy but I'm disappointed to their deluxe mat room because of they lack of sense of style in terms of decorating the room and furniture. It's not catchy in the eye and they don't have exhaust fan in the bathroom also. They need to improve so that they could adapt from the other hotel. The price of the room isn't worth it. I had lots of expectation of this hotel but I end up disappointed and if we compare it to the other hotels, it is more way better than this. I'm just saying on what I had experience and it was a friendly feedback.

Room is alright since it has view from the city. But the very satisfying part of this hotel is its location. Location is very accessible and situated within the heart of the city proper. The cr is small but is enough to accommodate the guests. Staff is very accommodating. So overall stay is good.
