Henia was a wonderful resort filled with great staff. I had booked 7 rooms for our family and each room was kept cool and clean throughout our stay with the wonderful staff. Parking was simple even for two large vehicles as they were reserved and had 24 hour security present. Location to all the major bars and attractions were walkable and we felt safe doing so. Even for moments when we need a tricycle, security was able to flag one down for us, easily, and we were at our destination in no time. I will be back in Henia for my next visit to Dumaguete.

Your Travel Guide to Dumaguete as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dumaguete from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Dumaguete from Manila and other major Philippine cities is most efficiently done by air. Several airlines operate flights to Dumaguete Airport (DGT), with fares typically ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. The flight duration from Manila is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. You can easily book your flight on Traveloka for competitive rates and convenient scheduling.

For those preferring land and sea travel, options are available but significantly longer. From Manila, you can take a bus to various ports like Batangas or Lucena, then a ferry to Caticlan or Iloilo, and subsequently another ferry or flight to Dumaguete. Alternatively, direct bus trips to Dumaguete are possible but can take over 24 hours. These options are more budget-friendly, with bus fares ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 one way, and ferry tickets varying.

If you are coming from nearby Visayas cities like Cebu or Bacolod, ferry services are a popular and economical choice. Ferries from Cebu to Dumaguete typically cost around PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 and take about 4-6 hours. From Bacolod, you can take a bus to San Carlos City, then a ferry to Toledo, Cebu, and another ferry to Dumaguete, or a direct bus to Dumaguete via a roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferry, which is more direct but less frequent.

Best Time to Visit Dumaguete

Dumaguete enjoys a tropical climate, with generally warm temperatures year-round. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, island hopping, and exploring the city's attractions. The weather is typically sunny with occasional brief showers.

The peak tourist season often coincides with the dry months, especially around the Christmas holidays and Holy Week, when you might find slightly higher prices for accommodation and flights. For a more relaxed experience and potentially better deals, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November to February, or from April to May, outside of major holidays. The wet season, from June to October, sees more frequent and heavier rainfall, which can sometimes disrupt travel plans, though it also means fewer crowds and lower prices.

Food and Dining Near Dumaguete — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Dumaguete offers a delightful culinary scene, with several local specialties that Filipino travelers should not miss. One of the most iconic is "Budbod Kabog," a local delicacy made from millet seeds, coconut milk, and sugar, often wrapped in banana leaves. It's a sweet and slightly chewy treat, perfect for breakfast or as a snack. You can find this in local markets and some bakeries.

Another must-try is "Kinilaw," the Filipino version of ceviche. In Dumaguete, it's often prepared with fresh, locally caught fish, marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. The tangy and fresh flavors are incredibly refreshing, especially in the tropical heat. Many restaurants along Rizal Boulevard and local eateries serve excellent kinilaw.

For seafood lovers, grilled fish and other marine delights are abundant. Dumaguete's proximity to the sea means you can enjoy freshly caught seafood prepared in various ways. Look for restaurants offering grilled tuna, squid, or prawns. The simple preparation often highlights the natural freshness of the ingredients.

Don't leave Dumaguete without trying "Silvanas" and "Sans Rival" from Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries. Silvanas are delicate, cashew-meringue cookies sandwiched with buttercream, while Sans Rival is a rich, layered cake with buttercream and cashews. These are popular pasalubong (take-home treats) and a sweet ending to any meal.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Dumaguete

Dumaguete is known for its friendly and hospitable locals, embodying the "City of Gentle People" moniker. When interacting, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. Respect local customs, especially when visiting religious sites; dress modestly and be mindful of noise levels. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service.

Dumaguete is generally a safe city for tourists. However, like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911. It's also a good idea to have the hotel's contact number readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. For communication, ensure you have messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. If you plan on booking local tours or transport, having the Traveloka app handy will be beneficial for booking attractions and flights.

Familiarize yourself with basic Filipino phrases, though English is widely spoken and understood in Dumaguete, especially in tourist areas and educational institutions like Silliman University. Understanding local etiquette and having practical apps will make your journey smoother and more enjoyable.

I stayed at the hotel for two night. The first night, the room next to me had a case of extreme domestic violence. Shouting, smashing glasses, crying historically and the sounds of multiple physical assaults. I reported it to the hotel and they didnt do anything. Upon checking out, the front desk told me my bed sheets were dirty and needed to be cleaned. They charged me 250 peso to clean a bed sheet. That was my experience.

We had a good 3 nights at the hotel. We were in town to visit relatives. The location is central. We just walked to Jollibee,McDonald’s, supermarket and Goldilocks bake shop. There’s a pharmacy next door for basics like bottled water, pop and snacks. The staff were friendly and accommodating. There were 4 of us in the room and the room was comfortable. It had a mini fridge, a small sitting area but no microwave. Lots of shelving and closet space. The property was comfortable enough and modern with 2 full beds in the room. Their rating could be higher if they had a gym, restaurant and pool. Nothing fancy about the property. Great for the price.

Good hotel. Easy motorcycle parking with fulltime security guard watching your bike. Waking distance to the boardwalk. Good internet. Lots of shopping close by. The free breakfast is very good. Western and filipino food. The only complaint i have is i would of liked the shower to be hotter. But the water pressure is fine. Id book the hotel ahead of time if you plan on staying on a weekend.

Basic clean room and shower with no fridge, but fast wifi and tv with American channels. Pretty good location with a Mang Insal and 7-Eleven right around the corner... would stay there again.

Hotel location is close to amneties. The room is ok and the bed is good. If you have early flights, be sure to contact a motorcab in advance.
