Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For the most convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the most common method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Manila from various provincial capitals. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on the origin city and booking time. From NAIA, you can take a taxi, a ride-sharing service, or the airport bus to reach Makati, with travel times varying from 30 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic. Consider using Traveloka to book your flight for competitive rates and convenient scheduling.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces in Luzon, bus travel is a viable and economical option. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila, such as those in Cubao and Pasay, serve routes from various cities. Bus fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, with journey times varying significantly based on distance and traffic. Once in Metro Manila, you can transfer to a local bus, jeepney, or the LRT/MRT system to reach Makati.

For those driving from Northern or Southern Luzon, expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) provide access to Metro Manila. Toll fees can add up, typically ranging from PHP 300 to PHP 600 for a round trip, depending on your starting point and vehicle type. Navigating Metro Manila traffic can be challenging, so using a GPS or navigation app is highly recommended.

Best Time to Visit Makati

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Makati is no exception. The dry season, generally from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for walking around and visiting outdoor attractions. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 32°C.

The wet season runs from May to October. While this period can bring frequent rain showers, they are often short-lived and followed by sunshine. The advantage of visiting during the wet season is that there are fewer tourists, and hotel prices might be slightly lower. It’s advisable to carry an umbrella or raincoat and be prepared for occasional traffic delays due to heavy rainfall.

For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or February. These periods fall within the dry season but may offer slightly more moderate tourist numbers compared to the peak holiday months of December and January. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Makati offers a dynamic experience year-round.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No visit to the Philippines is complete without savoring Adobo, the unofficial national dish. This savory and tangy stew, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries around Makati, often served with steamed rice.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that offers a comforting and refreshing taste. Made with a tamarind base and loaded with vegetables and meat (like pork, beef, or fish), its distinct sourness is a beloved characteristic. Many restaurants in Makati offer their own take on this classic soup, providing a delightful culinary experience.

For a taste of something sweet and satisfying, Halo-Halo is the ultimate Filipino dessert. This popular mixed-fruit concoction features shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s a perfect treat to cool down with, especially on a warm Makati day, and can be found in many dessert shops and restaurants.

Lechon, a whole roasted pig with crispy, succulent skin, is a celebratory dish that is a true Filipino indulgence. While often reserved for special occasions, some restaurants in Makati offer lechon portions that allow you to sample this delicacy. The rich flavor and irresistible crunch of the skin make it a memorable culinary adventure for any food-loving traveler.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and warmth. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders is deeply ingrained, so using "po" and "opo" (particles indicating respect) when speaking to older individuals is customary.

When it comes to safety in Makati, it's generally a secure city, especially in commercial areas. However, like any urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's also advisable to use reputable transportation services. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is 117.

For navigating the city and staying connected, several apps are highly useful. Grab is essential for booking taxis and food delivery. Google Maps is invaluable for directions, and it's helpful to download offline maps of Manila. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by locals. Having these apps on your smartphone will greatly enhance your travel experience.

Understanding local customs can enrich your visit. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service, typically around 10%. When invited to someone's home, it's polite to bring a small gift. Embracing the local culture with an open mind will lead to more meaningful interactions and a deeper appreciation of your time in Makati.

I like generally the staff except for the waitress who was coughing all the time. I like the general feel of the hotel. The smell is very nice. I just happen to stay in this hotel several times but I think it has been 3 times already I experienced stuck bath drain cover. The levers dont work. The breakfast was good and Hotsamama Japanese restaurant was fantastic. Great choices and reasonable price.

I enjoyed this lovely little hotel. The only thing I did not like was expedia said unlimited wifi when it's not true. They said expedia can't change it. I don't know. The wifi is free up to so many bits unless u pay 100 pesos a day then u get all u want so that was ok with me. Breakfast was very good except for the choice of bread. No sweet pastry, bummer. Still a very nice place to stay. Would stay there again !!!

My room was main road side so it was very noisy from the road in the morning time.

We enjoyed our stay. The service was excellent. There were a few minor problems with the room, which management said they would take care of right away.

Like the place and the room. Especially the bath room for a clean set up. As improvement, hopefully more choices on the menus for drinks and meal.

Extremely disappointed the hotel itself is lovely but when I had to cancel due to a serious problem they would not give me any money back no refund and I have stayed at this hotel and rented more than one room on numerous occasions again very disappointed in Herald Suites

Location is great with many good restaurants and shopping center within short walking distance. Service is good and staff are friendly. Air con is noisy and requires upgrading.
