There’s peace and quiet. Food was superb! Never had to share the pool. Beach front looks great. Staff butler Mikoy was conveniently always available without being obtrusive. The place has flair and art, plenty of greenery, flowers and wild birds too! Paradise.

Darrel and the rest of the staff was more than accommodating. They could not have been friendlier or more helpful with your every request. The electricity went out two times not the fault of the resort, but the backup generator was not working. We had a beachfront cottage which had wonderful views.

Pet Policy at Hof Gorei Beach Resort

Understanding the limitations and any associated policies beforehand will ensure a smooth and enjoyable stay for both you and your furry companion, allowing you to share your island adventure together.

It is advisable to inquire directly with the resort about the specific types of pets allowed, any size or breed restrictions, and potential additional fees that may apply. This proactive approach will help manage expectations and ensure that your pet is welcomed. Having this information upfront allows you to prepare accordingly and make sure your pet’s needs are met during your visit to Samal Island, making your trip more comfortable and stress-free.

Check-in and Check-out Information

The check-in process at Hof Gorei Beach Resort is scheduled between 14:00 and 15:00. If you happen to arrive earlier than the designated check-in time, you can usually leave your luggage with the front desk and perhaps start exploring the resort’s common areas or enjoy a meal at the restaurant while you wait. This flexibility ensures your journey to relaxation begins as smoothly as possible.

For guests arriving before 14:00, it’s always a good idea to contact the resort in advance to see if an early check-in is possible, especially if your flight or travel schedule dictates it. While not always guaranteed, resorts often try to accommodate early arrivals if rooms are ready. In the meantime, you can make use of the resort’s facilities, such as the swimming pool or the private beach, to start your vacation.

This way, even if your room isn't immediately available, your time is still well spent enjoying the amenities.

Check-out is required before 12:00 noon. This allows the resort to prepare the rooms for incoming guests. If you have a later flight or wish to maximize your last day on Samal Island, inquire about the possibility of a late check-out. While often subject to room availability and potentially an additional fee, it can be a valuable service for extending your enjoyment of the resort. If a late check-out isn't feasible, the resort typically offers luggage storage services.

This allows you to continue exploring the island or relax by the beach or pool after you’ve settled your bill, ensuring you can make the most of your final hours before heading to your next destination.

Your Travel Guide to Samal Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Samal Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers originating from Manila, the most efficient way to reach Samal Island is by air. You’ll need to book a flight to Davao International Airport (Francisco Bangoy International Airport). Major Philippine carriers like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate numerous flights daily from Manila (NAIA) to Davao. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 40 minutes to 2 hours.

Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect prices to range from approximately PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip if booked strategically. It’s highly recommended to use Traveloka to compare prices and book your flight well in advance to secure the best deals.

Upon arrival at Davao International Airport, your journey to Samal Island continues by land and sea. You’ll need to take a taxi or a ride-sharing service to one of the ferry terminals serving Samal Island. The Sasa Wharf and Sta. Ana Wharf are the most common departure points. The taxi ride from the airport to these terminals takes about 30-45 minutes, costing around PHP 300-500.

From the terminals, you can take a ferry or a smaller boat (often called a "Roro" or passenger boat) to Samal Island. The ferry ride itself is short, about 20-30 minutes, and costs approximately PHP 10-20 per person.

From Cebu, you also have the option of flying directly to Davao International Airport. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines offer regular flights from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to Davao, with a flight time of about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares are generally competitive, often ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip.

Once in Davao, follow the same steps as mentioned for travelers from Manila: take a taxi to a ferry terminal and then a boat to Samal Island. For those who prefer not to fly, a land and sea route is possible but significantly longer, involving buses to Davao City and then the ferry.

If you are already in Davao City, getting to Samal Island is straightforward. From anywhere in Davao City, take a taxi or public transport (like a jeepney or bus) to the Sasa Wharf or Sta. Ana Wharf. The travel time within Davao City to the terminals will depend on your starting point and traffic conditions, but generally takes 30-45 minutes. The ferry or boat ride to Samal Island is then a quick 20-30 minute journey.

This makes Samal Island a very accessible destination for residents of Davao City and those visiting the region.

Best Time to Visit Samal Island

Samal Island experiences a tropical climate, which means it's generally warm and humid throughout the year. The island doesn't have distinct wet and dry seasons in the same way some other parts of the Philippines do, but rather a period that is generally drier and a period that tends to be wetter. The drier months are typically from March to May, offering plenty of sunshine and lower chances of rain, making it ideal for beach activities and outdoor exploration.

This period often coincides with peak tourist season, especially around the summer holidays, so expect more crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The months from June to February can see more rainfall, though it often comes in the form of short, intense showers rather than prolonged downpours. This doesn't mean you should avoid visiting during these times; the rain can be refreshing, and the island is often less crowded. For Filipino travelers looking for a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially better deals on accommodation and flights, the shoulder months or the wetter season can be quite rewarding.

The lush greenery is at its most vibrant during these periods, and you can still enjoy plenty of sunshine between the showers.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the months of March to May for the best chance of consistent sunshine, or from September to November when the rainfall typically starts to decrease but before the peak holiday season truly kicks in. Ultimately, Samal Island is a year-round destination, and with a bit of flexibility, you can enjoy its beauty regardless of the specific month you choose to visit.

Food and Dining Near Samal Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When you visit Samal Island, prepare your taste buds for a delightful culinary journey that reflects the bounty of the sea and the richness of Mindanaoan flavors. One dish you absolutely must try is the **Kinilaw**. This is the Filipino version of ceviche, where fresh raw fish (often tuna or tanigue) is "cooked" in vinegar, typically coconut vinegar, along with ginger, onions, chili, and sometimes calamansi.

The tanginess of the vinegar, combined with the freshness of the fish and the kick of the chili, creates a refreshing appetizer or light meal that is perfect for the tropical climate. Look for local eateries or carinderias that serve freshly prepared kinilaw for an authentic taste.

Another local specialty that highlights the island’s connection to the sea is **Grilled Seafood**. Samal Island is surrounded by rich fishing grounds, so expect to find an abundance of fresh fish, prawns, squid, and other shellfish. Many beachfront restaurants and local markets offer freshly caught seafood grilled to perfection over charcoal. The simplicity of grilling allows the natural flavors of the seafood to shine through, often enhanced with just a marinade of soy sauce, calamansi, and garlic.

Enjoying a plate of grilled fish with a side of garlic rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce, calamansi, and chili is a characteristic island dining experience.

For those with a sweet tooth, **Durian**, the king of fruits, is a must-try if you are visiting during its season (typically from August to October). While its pungent aroma is infamous, its creamy, custard-like flesh has a unique flavor that many find addictive. You can try it fresh, or in various forms like durian candy, ice cream, or pastries.

Davao Region, including Samal Island, is one of the primary producers of durian in the Philippines, so you'll find it readily available in local markets. Be adventurous and give it a taste!

Don't leave Samal Island without trying **Sinugba**, which refers to anything grilled. While it often applies to seafood, it also includes pork and chicken. The smoky flavor from the charcoal grill is incredibly satisfying. Often served with a side of dipping sauces like soy sauce with vinegar and chili, or a spicy vinegar concoction, sinugba is a staple in Filipino gatherings and a popular choice in local eateries.

It’s a hearty and flavorful option that embodies the Filipino love for grilled meats.

Finally, for a taste of local Mindanaoan cuisine, seek out dishes that incorporate local ingredients. While not exclusive to Samal, dishes like **Tiyula Itum** (a soup with a distinct black color from burnt coconut and spices, often made with beef or goat) or **Satti** (a sweet and spicy chicken or beef dish served with a special sauce and rice cakes) can sometimes be found in more traditional eateries on the island or in nearby Davao City.

Exploring these regional specialties offers a deeper appreciation of the diverse culinary landscape of the Philippines.

For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger to stay in touch. Lastly, a currency converter app can be handy for quick calculations if you’re dealing with local vendors or planning your budget.

Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may speak Visayan dialects, although English and Tagalog are widely understood in tourist areas. Having offline maps downloaded can also be a lifesaver if you encounter areas with spotty internet connectivity. These digital tools, combined with a spirit of adventure and respect for the local culture, will help you navigate Samal Island with ease and make the most of your visit.

Darrel and the rest of the staff was more than accommodating. They could not have been friendlier or more helpful with your every request. The electricity went out two times not the fault of the resort, but the backup generator was not working. We had a beachfront cottage which had wonderful views.

The accommodations were very nice and the staff was excellent. They were very responsive to our requests and went above and beyond to make things extra special for Valentine's Day. Our personal butler,G.R. handled everything thing from a motorcycle rental to flower bouquets and extra special margaritas. It will always hold a special memory and I plan to visit again.

The room was very clean.and nice. Victorian style. So many steps to walk to the beach unit. Nice sandy beach. We were not informed of any tour options, but their were. The food was good. A very romantic getaway. Not recommended if you can't walk 300+ steps.

This place is a little piece of paradise. I love how it’s all placed inside the natural landscape. I would stay here before any other place on the island. I prefer how clam and secluded it feels compared to a busy beach resort. I went snorkelling, swimming and ate the best food here the island has to offer. My butler/attendent (Leng Leng) was amazing and made the stay here even better. She was a fantastic lady to talk with and have around to make this experience even better for us. As far as I am concerned God lives here and I was happy to join him for a visit.

Only stayed on night, I think we were the only ones there. Very nice resort, quiet and peaceful. Steps getting to and from bungalow to main office and parking lot are crazy steep, with lots of steps, no elevator. You bell boy is an actual bell boy and will respond when you ring the bell, while on duty, he clocked out at 8pm which was fine. But bell boy Carrie’s luggage up and down stairs for you. Try to limit the amount of luggage you bring

Very beautiful older resort. The property and beach are breathtaking. It is down a very steep hill so plan accordingly. A long hike up to the parking and taxi. Excellent food served at your room, at the bar or on the beach. Very romantic. Many tours available. And very inexpensive. I will definitely return for a longer visit.

We had Very nice stay. The entrance in a little rough. Was not prepared for so many steps up and down getting into the property. Do not remember it being listed in property information.. But once down into the property it was everything we had hoped for. Quiet, tropical, lots of exotic birds and so many beautiful plants. The Bungalow we stayed in was perfect size for 2 people, very romantic. The service is casual and relaxed but still attentive. Our Room Butler Jerlyn was amazing. So friendly and answered any questions we had. Overall we loved our stay. Thank you

The experience was atrocious with the exception of the fact they assign you a butler Mickey who tries to help you in Every way he can. Beside that all was atrocious! To begin with the bathroom facilities are in a separate little Hut you have to walk out of your room out into the public outside and then enter a room and that room was overrun with ants and I complained and they claimed that they sprayed it but I am sure they did not spray it or maybe they did but it still was overrun with ants everywhere. Disgusting. Also there is an owner and her name is Jane. I told her that I need a ride to the boat and I told her I had received an email from her hotel telling me it would cost me $150 Philippine pesos. She denied any such email had ever been sent to me. She called me a liar! And she came to me personally and she aggressively waved her hands at me in a threatening manner. I am going to be 80 years old on December 20th and this frightened me. She is a horrible human being and doesn't belong in business. Anyway I sent that email to her and I told her she needs to apologize to me because here is the email that she claimed never existed and she called me a liar and I proved I did receive such an email. Also to get to the beach you have to walk down many many concrete steps and to get back to your room you have to climb up many many steps. Also on the last night there was a wasp flying around in my room and I was terribly frightened I would never stay here again ened. Also

Normally we take a boat over to the island but due to the pandemic it was not available at this time. The boat trip makes the ambience even more special. That did not interfere with our trip, the service is impeccable, the ambience is really romantic it’s a sweet little place talked away on the island
