Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, Manila is accessible through various modes of transport. Flights are the quickest option, with numerous airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offering daily flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from major cities such as Cebu, Davao, and Palawan. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 8,000 or more, depending on the origin city, airline, and booking time. It's always wise to book flight tickets in advance for better rates.

Long-distance bus travel is a more economical choice for those coming from Luzon. Major bus terminals like Cubao and Pasay cater to routes from provinces like Baguio, Pampanga, and Bicol. Bus fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, with travel times varying significantly based on distance, from 4-6 hours from Baguio to 10-12 hours from Bicol. These buses usually arrive at terminals within Metro Manila, from where you can take a taxi or public transport to your specific destination.

For those driving from nearby provinces in Luzon, the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) are the primary highways leading into Metro Manila. Toll fees will apply, varying based on the entry and exit points. Navigating Manila itself can be challenging due to traffic, so using navigation apps is highly recommended. Planning your route and considering off-peak travel times can make the drive more manageable.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Manila is no exception. The best time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity and less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's numerous attractions. Temperatures usually range from 25°C to 35°C.

The period from December to February is often considered the most pleasant, with cooler temperatures and less intense heat. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower costs, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or late April. The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers and typhoons, which can disrupt travel plans.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. Adobo, a national dish, is a must-try, featuring meat (often chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. You can find excellent versions in traditional Filipino restaurants and even in casual eateries across the city. Its savory and tangy profile is a true representation of Filipino home cooking.

Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, is another beloved dish, typically made with tamarind broth and various meats and vegetables. Its comforting warmth and distinct sourness make it a favorite, especially on cooler evenings or after a long day. Many local carinderias and restaurants serve this hearty soup, offering a taste of authentic Filipino comfort food.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-halo is an iconic Filipino dessert that is perfect for Manila's warm climate. This colorful concoction is a mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a refreshing treat that offers a delightful explosion of textures and flavors. You can find this popular dessert in many restaurants and dessert shops.

Lechon, a whole roasted pig with crispy skin, is a celebratory dish that is a staple at Filipino gatherings. While a whole lechon might be too much for a solo traveler, many restaurants offer lechon kawali (crispy fried pork belly) or lechon paksiw (pork stewed in liver sauce), which provide a taste of this beloved delicacy. Exploring local markets and restaurants will reveal many opportunities to sample these dishes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. While generally friendly, it's always wise to be mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, to avoid petty theft. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your personal space.

For safety, it's recommended to avoid displaying expensive items openly and to be cautious when walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas. In case of emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact numbers of your hotel and any local friends or acquaintances readily available. Familiarizing yourself with the general layout of the city and sticking to well-lit, populated areas will enhance your safety.

To navigate Manila more effectively, several apps can be very useful. Waze or Google Maps are essential for real-time traffic updates and navigation, which is crucial given Manila's notorious traffic. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are also indispensable for booking transportation, offering a convenient and often more affordable alternative to taxis. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are widely used by Filipinos.

When I arrived at this hotel I had a room that first had broken roof and then water leaking from pipes and TV was poor so got upgraded into a room where the TV was really poor also and also rats running across the roof every night. Even I spoke to staff to sort out these issues the staff didn't seem to want to communicate any of these problems to 1 of the 4 managers there so when I spoke to the manager on my last day before leaving the manager upgraded me to VIP room and gave me free meal and breakfast for the last morning. I feel very dissatisfied with this hotel because when booked the hotel it told me breakfast was included but then when arrived at hotel and I asked about this the staff told me I was not intitled to breakfast.

The room is very clean and amazing interior design . I love also the T&B..The foods are GREAT!!! But the staff when we checked out was annoying. My husband and I were asking for the official receipt at the reception..The staff who attended us (I forgot the name but he’s a guy) said “pahintay na lang po”..after 5-10minutes I asked the other staff at the reception to ffup our receipt, then few minutes after the Guy (i think manager) explained that they not issued any receipt bec it is attached to our Voucher(i don’t know what he’s referring to). To make it short WE ARE WAITING for NOTHING.. Suggest to train more their staff to communicate with their clients well..

Very clean room with basic amenities. A heads up that this hotel is commonly used for males who have recently met local females.
