Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers looking to reach Manila, flying remains one of the most efficient methods, especially from distant islands. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from key cities such as Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. Travel time from these cities typically ranges from 1 to 2 hours.

Traveling by bus is a more economical option for those coming from Luzon's northern and southern regions. Major bus terminals like Cubao, Pasay, and Buendia serve numerous routes to Manila. For example, a bus trip from Baguio City can take approximately 4 to 6 hours, with fares ranging from PHP 500 to PHP 800. Similarly, buses from Bicol can take 8 to 10 hours, with ticket prices between PHP 800 to PHP 1,200. These options are ideal for budget-conscious travelers who don't mind a longer journey.

Driving to Manila offers the most flexibility, particularly for families or groups traveling from nearby provinces. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to Metro Manila. Toll fees can add up, typically ranging from PHP 300 to PHP 600 depending on your starting point and the specific routes taken. The travel time can vary significantly based on traffic, but it allows for stops along the way.

Best Time to Visit Manila

Manila experiences a tropical climate, characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, generally from November to April, is considered the most pleasant time to visit. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and sightseeing. Temperatures usually range from 25°C to 33°C, offering comfortable conditions for enjoying the city's attractions.

The peak tourist season often coincides with the dry months, particularly from December to February, due to the cooler temperatures and holiday festivities. This is also when you might find higher hotel rates and more crowds at popular spots. For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or March. These periods still offer favorable weather while potentially providing better value for accommodation and flights.

The wet season runs from May to October, bringing with it higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this season might deter some travelers, it also offers a different perspective of the city and can present opportunities for lower travel costs. If you plan to visit during this time, it's advisable to pack an umbrella or raincoat and be prepared for potential travel disruptions due to heavy rain.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila is a culinary melting pot, offering a diverse range of flavors that reflect its rich history and cultural influences. A characteristic Filipino dish you must try is Adobo, a savory and tangy stew typically made with chicken or pork, braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. Its comforting taste and widespread availability make it a national favorite. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries and even in more upscale restaurants around Manila.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that is a staple in Filipino households. Its distinct sourness comes from ingredients like tamarind, guava, or calamansi, and it's usually prepared with meat (pork, beef, fish, or shrimp) and a variety of vegetables. The comforting warmth and unique flavor profile of Sinigang make it a perfect dish, especially on a cooler or rainy day. Many restaurants near Hotel Sogo Malate will offer this hearty soup.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an iconic Filipino dessert that is perfect for Manila's warm climate. This refreshing concoction is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's a visually appealing and deliciously sweet treat that offers a burst of flavors and textures. Finding a good Halo-Halo is part of the Manila experience, and many local spots serve this popular dessert.

Don't leave Manila without trying Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its crispy skin and succulent meat. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, many restaurants offer Lechon as a regular menu item, served in portions. The rich, savory flavor and the satisfying crunch of the skin make it an indulgence that is truly Filipino. Exploring local markets and carinderias can lead you to some of the most authentic and delicious Lechon experiences.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. While Manila is generally welcoming, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, to avoid petty theft. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of your belongings.

For safety, it's recommended to use reputable transportation services. Stick to official taxis or well-known ride-sharing apps like Grab, which is widely used in the Philippines. Avoid hailing unmarked vehicles. In case of emergencies, know the local emergency numbers. Having a local SIM card can be very helpful for communication and accessing mobile data. It also allows you to easily contact friends, family, or hotel staff if needed.

Several apps can enhance your travel experience in Manila. Grab is essential for transportation and food delivery. Google Maps is invaluable for navigation, helping you find your way around the city and estimate travel times. For currency conversion and language assistance, apps like XE Currency and Google Translate can be very useful. Having these tools on your smartphone will make navigating Manila much smoother and more enjoyable.

When exploring, be respectful of local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites like churches. Be mindful of noise levels in residential areas. Manila is a city of contrasts, and embracing its unique rhythm will lead to a more rewarding visit. By staying informed and prepared, you can fully appreciate the cultural richness and dynamic energy that Manila has to offer.

Booked at sogo new hotel Manila, when we got there we found it had been closed for a month before I booked a room. I was not happy, they had us stay at there adults only hotel not a good place to stay when you have your wife with you.

its a false advertisement, malodorous scent in the room, dirty and disgusting blanket , old/dusty/ noisy Airconditioner, No sense of Privacy - not a sound proof room- you can hear all the noises around and all the activities going on . They dont know about people who booked and paid online before checking In - So disapointing and Upsetting !

Upon arrival my already booked with Expedia the room there they look at me like I'm from outer space don't even recognize what expedia is even after I show them the confirmation I'm told to wait and then another person comes with the same dazed look it's about an hour before I finally get into the room which is disgusting smells musky and full of smoke it's late so I end up staying anyway check out right away the next morning look at my photos there's the safe broken too we have more chances on getting those things back then getting anything to compensate my terrible stay and you will see how they will reply it will be some generic we're sorry we'll work on it take note when these hotels give those kind of replies it means absolutely they will do nothing and our of no credibility if they were they would reply with we want to compensate and will but you will never see that they have no credibility only good thing the young lady who checked me out was very quick and pleasant but that's the only thing

This particular hotel is not an ideal hotel for families due to the amount of prostituion in the area. This reflects in the overall service of the hotel. It makes the room service very slow and the noise level is beyond where it should be. If you like microwave food then this hotel is for you. The guys who greet you are very friendly but always looking for a tip. Overall, very dissappointed.

Terrible!!! The hotel is false advertising... free international call. We stayed for 16 nights and the international call was never available. The internet connection was crappy. It was dropping off every 10 - 15 minutes. Employees cannot remember our food order so many times. Employees kept disturbing and reminding us about checking out early in our stay. The building has old smell. The hotel is beside an establishment where a full bench of ladies are sitting in front of the building in the evening.

I appreciate that the staff is very helpful, always polite and accommodating. I enjoyed all the food options, especially the breakfast buffet promotion they had at the time of my stay.

I just want to Thank everyone you guys have a very friendly and helpful staff and compared to other expensive hotel you are way cleaner. If it’s smoke free I said it’s perfect hotel for us. I can recommend you to have a smoke free floor for your non smoker guest. Thank you and merry Christmas
