Your Travel Guide to Quezon City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Quezon City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer frequent flights to Manila from various provincial capitals. Fares can range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 5,000 or more, depending on the origin city, airline, and booking time. From NAIA, you can take a taxi, ride-sharing service, or airport bus to reach Quezon City, with travel times varying from 45 minutes to over an hour due to traffic.

If you are traveling from Luzon, bus travel is a practical and economical option. Numerous bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes to different parts of Quezon City, including Novaliches. Companies like Victory Liner, Genesis Transport, and Five Star offer services from Northern Luzon provinces such as Baguio, Pangasinan, and Pampanga. Bus fares typically range from PHP 400 to PHP 900, and travel times can vary significantly based on distance and traffic conditions. You can also book flight tickets for longer distances if time is a constraint.

For those traveling from the Visayas or Mindanao, flying into NAIA is the most efficient way to reach Metro Manila. Once in Manila, you can then utilize the extensive public transportation network, including buses and jeepneys, to reach Quezon City. Alternatively, for a more direct route, you can look for flights that might land in smaller airports closer to Quezon City if available, though NAIA remains the primary gateway. Planning your journey in advance, especially during peak seasons, can help secure better fares and ensure a smoother travel experience.

Best Time to Visit Quezon City

Quezon City, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season from November to April and the wet season from May to October. The coolest months are typically from December to February, with average temperatures around 27-28°C, making this period pleasant for outdoor activities and exploring the city. The hottest months are usually from March to May, where temperatures can soar to 32-34°C, so staying hydrated and seeking air-conditioned spaces is advisable.

The wet season, from May to October, is characterized by frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this might disrupt some outdoor plans, it also brings lush greenery to the surrounding areas and can offer a respite from the heat. Traveling during the shoulder months, such as November or February, can offer a good balance, with generally favorable weather and fewer crowds compared to the peak holiday season.

For Filipino travelers, visiting during off-peak seasons, outside of major holidays like Christmas and Holy Week, can mean better deals on accommodation and fewer crowds at popular spots. The period from June to October, despite the rain, can be a good time for those who prefer a more relaxed pace and don't mind occasional showers. Ultimately, the best time depends on your personal preferences for weather and crowd levels.

Food and Dining Near Quezon City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No culinary exploration of the Philippines is complete without indulging in Adobo. This iconic dish, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, offers a savory and tangy flavor profile that is a staple in Filipino households. You can find excellent versions in local eateries and even in some of the larger dining establishments around Quezon City.

Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, is another must-try. Made with a tamarind base and usually featuring pork, beef, or seafood along with various vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes, it’s a comforting dish, especially on a rainy day. The distinct sourness is a characteristic flavor that many Filipinos love, and it’s widely available in carinderias and restaurants.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is the ultimate Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream is a refreshing treat, perfect for the tropical climate. It’s a popular item in many dessert shops and restaurants, offering a delightful mix of textures and flavors.

Lechon, a whole roasted pig with crispy skin, is a celebratory dish that is a favorite at parties and gatherings. While a whole lechon might be too much for a solo traveler, many restaurants offer lechon kawali (crispy fried pork belly) or lechon paksiw (pork belly stewed in a sweet and sour sauce), which provide a taste of this beloved dish. Exploring the local markets and smaller restaurants in Novaliches can lead you to authentic and delicious Filipino cuisine.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Quezon City

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor, a friendly smile, and respectful language are always appreciated. It's common to use terms like "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. Understanding basic Filipino greetings can also enhance your interactions.

When it comes to safety in Quezon City, like any large urban area, it's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like markets and public transport terminals. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It’s also wise to use reputable transportation services, such as accredited taxis or ride-sharing apps, and to avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night.

For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also helpful to have the contact numbers of your hotel and any local contacts readily available. Staying informed about local news and advisories can also be beneficial during your stay. Having a reliable mobile connection is key, so consider getting a local SIM card if you plan to stay connected frequently.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. Grab is the go-to app for ride-hailing and food delivery services. GCash or Maya are useful for mobile payments and money transfers, which are widely accepted in many establishments. These tools can make getting around and managing your daily needs in Quezon City much smoother.

The hotel was small. Entrances and hallways are narrow. Good in public safety for customer to book a room. Don’t have a good value of food in the menu. If an individual/group are to stay for temporary rest it is recommended, but for long stay such as quarantine purpose, I highly not suggest to book this hotel. Overall opinion, 3 out of 5 I will grade the hotel I have book on.

Not recommended for longer stay. The bed has only the fitted sheet on. They provided a top sheet but it's folded together with the towels inside a plastic bag. We requested a blanket to keep us warm but they gave us an extra top sheet instead. So, we ended up buying warm blankets to keep us warm in an air-conditioned room. Also, we requested to be transferred to another room because it smells like smoke all over, including the hallway. The rooms doesn,t seem to be sound proof ,could hear laughter and some commotions from outside & the other rooms. The parking area is very small, could hardly find a parking space. Also, they should replace their coffee cups, which has a break at the tip, & their serving trays,it looks very old & sticky. Anyway, thank to the staff who were very accommodating and polite. Thanks also for the excellent service.

Over all this place works for me. The location is directly across from my girlfriend’s store in the Nova Plaza Mall. The rooms are clean, bed is comfortable enough but the cleaning staff are extremely loud and inconsiderate in the hallways. Especially in the second floor. Another extremely negative thing is the Hotel Staff is not very nice or respectful towards my girlfriend. This place is obviously a place for short stay sexual encounters and they seem to believe my girlfriend is some hooker off the street. The front desk staff always greet my with respect but unfortunately they never extend the same treatment to my girlfriend. Instead she is subjected to dirty looks and not afforded the respect she deserves.

As always the Filipino people are very friendly equally the staff are very helpful. Hotel was clean service little slow with food but too and always made up for delay with a smile. It was very busy outside the hotel and you need to be alert at all times as vehicles of all shapes and sizes come at you from all directions. Lots of shops and not much stopping you to buy and you can look as much as you like and no one bothers you.As always traffic is the big problem if you think you need an hour to get from A2B give yourself 3 hours you will need it. overall good value for money and surprisingly room was very quite.

Novaliches is not an inspiring area of Manila. As a visitor, I doubt you come here unless you were meeting friends or had a business reason to be here. I was visting friends. There is nothing in the way of food and entertainment to excite a visitor. It is quite a run down area. However, the SOGO hotel was a surprise, being well presented inside. Smart clean room. The one surprising fact is having no windows, so you are never sure if it is day or night. I would stay here again if necessary. They offer a reasonable room service menu and it is brought quite quickly, usually within 15 minutes. . For any decent shopping or eating, you need to go on to SM Fairview... 10 peso by Jeepney or 200 by taxi, if you can find one..

The Hotel service is Good. Staff are very nice and approachable. The Room was in excellent condition. My concern is the Room next to me is keep on renovation til midnight up to early morning. Renovation is too noisy. I cant sleep well. The rest are all excellent.

Strange enough there was no refrigerator available, even in the more expensive 'Regency' room. And no sugar-free (=black) coffee also. The Japanese training of the staff to bow for every guest is a bit embarrassing. In Japan the guest would bow back, but at least it's a formalization of showing good manners, albeit a bit weird.

The staff is wonderful. Very polite and friendly. the food is terrible, always cold. Plan on eating out most of the time. Very good security. Unfortunately this hotel is used mostly by couples of all ages that want to have a private room for a few hours. You can rent rooms for as little as 2 to 3 hours. This means that the cleaning staff is working around the clock. This makes for a very noisy stay. also there are not any windows in the rooms.
