Your Travel Guide to Legazpi City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Legazpi City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Legazpi City from Manila is most efficiently done by air. Several airlines operate regular flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Legazpi International Airport (LGP). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares varying based on booking time and airline, often ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip. Booking your book flight in advance through Traveloka can secure better prices.

For those who prefer a more scenic and budget-friendly journey, bus travel is a viable option. Buses depart daily from various terminals in Metro Manila, such as Cubao and Pasay. The trip is considerably longer, taking approximately 10 to 12 hours. Ticket prices generally range from PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,800 for a one-way trip, with different classes of service available.

Driving from Manila to Legazpi City is also possible, covering a distance of about 500 kilometers. The journey primarily utilizes the Pan-Philippine Highway and involves several hours of driving, typically 9 to 11 hours without significant stops. Toll fees will add to the overall cost of the trip, which can be a factor for budget-conscious travelers.

Best Time to Visit Legazpi City

The ideal time to visit Legazpi City generally falls within the dry season, from November to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with less rainfall, making it perfect for outdoor activities and exploring the region's natural attractions, including the iconic Mayon Volcano. Temperatures are warm, averaging around 28-30 degrees Celsius.

The period from June to October marks the wet season, characterized by increased chances of typhoons and heavy rainfall. While this time might offer fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, it can disrupt travel plans and limit outdoor excursions. For travelers prioritizing clear skies and comfortable exploration, the dry season is highly recommended.

Visiting during local festivals can add another layer to your trip. The Ibalong Festival in October, for instance, is a major cultural event. However, be aware that accommodation might be more sought after and prices could be higher during these peak periods. Planning your visit outside of major holidays can offer a more relaxed experience.

Food and Dining Near Legazpi City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Legazpi City, and Albay in general, is renowned for its distinct culinary offerings, with Bicol Express being a standout. This spicy stew, made with pork, coconut milk, and an abundance of chilies and shrimp paste, is a flavorful representation of the region's love for heat. You can find authentic Bicol Express in many local eateries and restaurants throughout the city.

Another local delicacy you must try is Pinangat. Similar to Bicol Express in its use of coconut milk and chilies, Pinangat features shredded taro leaves or other local greens, often stuffed with fish or shrimp, and slow-cooked to perfection. The result is a rich, savory dish with a subtle kick. Look for this in traditional Filipino restaurants.

For seafood lovers, the proximity to the coast means fresh catches are readily available. Grilled fish, squid, and other marine delights are popular choices. Many restaurants along the coast or in the city center offer these, prepared in simple yet delicious ways that highlight their freshness. Don't forget to try Laing, another dish featuring taro leaves cooked in coconut milk, often with dried fish or shrimp.

Consider exploring the local markets for unique snacks and delicacies. From freshly made pili nut candies to various kakanin (rice cakes), these offer a taste of everyday Albayano life. Engaging with local vendors can also provide insights into the ingredients and preparation methods that make these dishes so special.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Legazpi City

Filipino travelers visiting Legazpi City will find the local culture warm and welcoming. Albayanos are known for their hospitality. It's customary to show respect to elders and use polite language. When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dressing modestly is appreciated. Understanding basic Filipino greetings and phrases will also enhance your interactions.

Safety in Legazpi City is generally good, but as with any travel, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings. Keep valuables secure, especially in crowded areas or public transport. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your hotel readily accessible.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city and its attractions. Ride-sharing apps can be useful for convenient transportation, and a translation app might be helpful if you encounter situations where language barriers arise, though English and Tagalog are widely understood.

Staff at check in made me feel uncomfortable, almost not welcome. Our room on 5th floor (highest in hotel) was facing road/front of hotel super noisy with road traffic, car alarms etc, not hotel fault but beware. House keeping need to check and replace what been used. Otherwise room was pleasant, rest of staff friendly, Breakfast nice variety, special shout out to Joseph in the bar, thank you for making us feel welcome.

Be aware only that they might give you a room with a suffocating drainage smell bathroom. Doesn't have big towels, needed to request. Guest Service was helpful when planned to stay another night and they gave me a better room. A variety of breakfast was fine, staffs were attentive, comfy place and easy access to city.

Would certainly stay again! Front desk and dining staff were excellent. Only quibble would be the remodeling going on during the stay. Was supposed to be from 8 am until 5 pm. Often it continued on into the evening, but I was in the Philippines. Island time is a real thing after all.

I had never stayed at a hotel with no toilet paper or tissue in the bathroom. It was just terrible with just two towels in the bathroom. In addition, after we checked out, we had to hang around until the room was inspected. I would not recommend this property to anyone.

It smelled sour? The sink filled up when u left the tap on and had a smell of sewer.. the breakfast was better than I expected tho had a decent selection of food(Filipino food). Staff were accommodating and polite.. but hey you get what you pay for. Not THAT bad. A 2-3/5 rating..

The staff at the reception and breakfast area were accommodating and helpful. The shuttle bus ride to the airport was relaxing. Hotel was walkable to malls and restaurants.

This property, though centrally located, a little dated...needs upgrading. Room given to me had terrible smell.

Good service, clean rooms. Free breakfast was good and the free shuttle service to the airport was a bonus. Lots of restaurants to eat and shopping malls are walkable. We had a lovely stay.

The hotel has no hot water.. I’ve been here a number of times and the sheets always have some sort of smell the other time it smelled like smoke and this time is smelled like it wasn’t washed properly had a faint smell of a dirty dish rag if that makes any sense? It smelled sour? The sink filled up when u left the tap on and had a smell of sewer.. the breakfast was better than I expected tho had a decent selection of food(Filipino food). Staff were accommodating and polite.. but hey you get what you pay for. Not THAT bad. A 2-3/5 rating..
