Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers coming from Manila or other major islands, flying is the most efficient way to reach Cebu City. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on booking time and season, but budget-friendly options can often be found for as low as PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 for a round trip if booked in advance.

If you prefer land and sea travel, you can also take a ferry to Cebu. Shipping lines like 2GO Travel offer routes from various ports, including Manila, to Cebu City. This option is more time-consuming, often taking 20 to 36 hours, but can be a more economical choice for those with ample time and who enjoy the journey. Bus travel within Mindanao also connects to ferry services that reach Cebu.

For those driving from nearby Visayan islands, you can utilize the various bridges and ferry services that connect to Cebu. The travel time will depend heavily on your starting point and the ferry schedules. Once you arrive in Cebu, you can then navigate towards Cebu City. Planning your route and booking your flight or ferry in advance through Traveloka can help secure better prices and ensure a smoother travel experience.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate, meaning it's warm and humid throughout the year. The dry season, generally from December to May, is considered the most popular time to visit. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. The Christmas season and Holy Week are peak periods, so expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices.

The wet season runs from June to November, characterized by higher humidity and a greater chance of rain, often in the form of short, intense downpours. While this period might see fewer tourists, it can offer a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially lower prices for flights and hotels. Despite the rain, many of Cebu's attractions remain accessible, and the city's indoor attractions and dining scenes are always available. For budget-conscious travelers, visiting during the shoulder months of the wet season can offer a good balance of favorable weather and affordability.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Cebu is complete without trying its famous Lechon. Cebu's lechon is renowned for its crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat, often seasoned with a unique blend of spices. You can find excellent lechon stalls and restaurants all over Cebu City, with many locals recommending places like CNT Lechon or Rico's Lechon for an authentic taste. It’s a celebratory dish that embodies the spirit of Filipino feasting.

Another must-try is Kinilaw, Cebu's version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is "cooked" in vinegar, mixed with onions, ginger, chili, and other aromatics. The tangy and spicy flavors are incredibly refreshing, especially in the tropical heat. Many local eateries and even higher-end restaurants offer their own take on this classic dish, providing a delightful culinary adventure for your palate.

For seafood lovers, grilled seafood is a staple in Cebu. Fresh catches from the surrounding waters are often grilled to perfection and served with various dipping sauces. Restaurants along the coast or even in the city center offer a wide selection of grilled fish, squid, and prawns. It’s a simple yet delicious way to enjoy the bounty of the Philippine seas.

Don't forget to sample some local delicacies like Puto Maya and Sikwate. Puto Maya is a sticky rice cake, often served with a rich, hot chocolate drink called Sikwate. This combination is a popular breakfast or merienda treat, offering a comforting and traditional taste of Cebu. Many local markets and cafes serve this delightful pairing, providing a genuine local experience. Exploring these culinary delights can be part of your plan when you book attraction packages.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. Filipinos, in general, are respectful of elders and traditions. When interacting with locals, a friendly demeanor and a smile go a long way. While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic Cebuano phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can be appreciated. Be mindful of local customs, especially when visiting religious sites, and dress modestly.

Cebu City is generally safe for tourists, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid displaying expensive items openly, and be cautious of petty theft in crowded places like markets or public transport. It's recommended to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps. Keep your hotel details handy and inform someone of your itinerary. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used for convenient and often more affordable transportation compared to regular taxis. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are popular among locals. Having these apps can make your stay smoother and more connected.

The accommodation is how we expected it to be. Location wise, it's near the city center and walking distance if you want to grab some food. The only downside is the internet/wifi connection, we couldn't connect during our 5day stay. They had a problem with their provider, hope it would be fixed soon.

The shower head only had 2 holes with water coming out of the God-knows-how many holes there were. The hotel can be better-maintained.

The rate can be lowered to match the space. Or add a kettle, slippers, and a bidet.

No parking available. Front desk in charge doesn't know how to handle a customer. And when We got our room I was very disappointed because the shower is not functioning well. Room is old. I was there 2018 my stay was perfect but recently it was the worst.

The Hotel is simple, yet elegant. Over all it is clean looking. The lobby itself is relaxing. WIFI is exceptional in speed (perfect score for that), the only suggestion I can give is that hope soon, tootbrush, toothpaste & bottled water will be free of charge. :) overall my hotel experience in stella hotel was amazing. I will give you perfect score with a bit of suggestion. 😉 thank you and see you next time soon

the place is actually good for back packers and the location is very accessible. one thing that I won't forget is how they help me retrieve the items I left form their hotel. they've been very persistent trying to reach me and extend their help. they even make an effort to send it to a courier that will deliver me the items here in Manila. they are indeed trustworthy. thank you guys!

The accommodation is how we expected it to be. Location wise, it's near the city center and walking distance if you want to grab some food. The only downside is the internet/wifi connection, we couldn't connect during our 5day stay. They had a problem with their provider, hope it would be fixed soon.

The linens and towels are a bit torn and off white and seems old already. We requested for new towels and linens because our stay there is for 4 nights.

The staff was unwelcoming, the room was old, the hot & cold (shower) was not functioning. We paid in full prior to our reservation dates. We were supposed to check-in at 2pm but came at around 5:20, but our room wasn't available so we waited for 30 minutes. They said our room was being cleaned. Super bad service.
