Your Travel Guide to Davao City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Davao City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to travel to Davao City from Manila and other major Philippine cities like Cebu is by air. Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) serves Davao City. Flight durations typically range from about 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours from Manila. Fares can vary significantly depending on the airline, booking time, and season, but budget-friendly options can often be found if you book flight tickets in advance, with prices sometimes starting from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip during promotional periods.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from closer islands in Mindanao, bus services are available. Buses from various points in Mindanao, such as General Santos City or Cagayan de Oro, arrive at Davao City's integrated bus terminals. The travel time can be considerably longer, ranging from 4 to 10 hours depending on the origin. Bus fares are generally more economical than flights, typically costing between PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 for a one-way trip.

Driving to Davao City is an option for those who enjoy road trips, particularly from other parts of Mindanao. The Pan-Philippine Highway connects Davao City to many major cities and towns. The journey can be extensive, requiring multiple days of travel for those coming from Luzon. Toll fees and fuel costs should be factored into the overall expense. Planning your route and stops is essential for a comfortable long-distance drive.

Best Time to Visit Davao City

Davao City enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with temperatures generally ranging from 26°C to 31°C. The city does not experience a distinct dry or wet season in the same way as some other parts of the Philippines, as it is located outside the typhoon belt. However, rainfall is more frequent from June to October. For travelers who prefer drier weather for outdoor activities, the months from November to May are generally considered more favorable.

The peak tourist season in Davao City often coincides with major festivals and holidays, such as the Kadayawan Festival in August and the Christmas season. During these times, expect higher hotel rates and larger crowds. For a more relaxed and potentially budget-friendly trip, consider visiting during the shoulder months or outside of major holidays. Regardless of when you visit, Davao City offers a welcoming atmosphere and plenty to explore.

Food and Dining Near Davao City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Davao City, a culinary adventure is available, and sampling local delicacies is a key part of the experience. One must-try is the Durian, often called the "King of Fruits." While its strong aroma is polarizing, its creamy texture and unique sweet-tart flavor are beloved by many. You can find fresh durian at local markets and fruit stands, especially during its peak season from August to October.

Another local favorite is the Kinilaw na Malasugi, a Davao specialty. This dish features fresh swordfish (malasugi) marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and zesty appetizer that showcases the freshness of the seafood available in the region. Many local restaurants and carinderias offer their own versions of this delicious dish.

For those with a sweet tooth, try the local delicacies made from Pili nuts. These nuts are often candied or made into pastries, offering a rich, buttery flavor. You can find Pili nut bars, cookies, and other treats in souvenir shops and local bakeries, making them perfect for pasalubong (take-home gifts) for family and friends.

Don't leave Davao without trying the local coffee. The region is known for its high-quality coffee beans, particularly the native Barako coffee. Enjoying a cup of freshly brewed local coffee at a café is a simple yet satisfying way to experience a part of Davao's agricultural heritage. Many coffee shops and restaurants serve locally sourced coffee, allowing you to savor its distinct taste.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Davao City

Davao City is known for its generally peaceful environment and the politeness of its residents. Locals are often friendly and helpful, so feel free to ask for directions or recommendations. A common practice is to greet elders with respect, and it's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to them or in formal situations. Understanding and respecting these local customs will enhance your interactions.

Safety is a priority in Davao City, and it is considered one of the safest major cities in the Philippines. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places, and avoid displaying expensive items openly. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious when walking alone at night. For emergencies, the general emergency number is 911.

To make your trip smoother, consider downloading a few essential apps. A ride-sharing app like Grab is very useful for transportation within the city, offering convenience and transparent pricing. A reliable navigation app such as Google Maps will help you find your way around Davao's streets and locate attractions. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger installed to stay in touch with contacts back home.

Additionally, having a local currency converter app can be helpful for managing your budget. Familiarizing yourself with basic Tagalog or Bisaya phrases can also be beneficial, although English is widely understood and spoken in tourist areas and hotels. Embracing the local culture and staying informed will contribute to a more enriching and secure travel experience in Davao City.

The staff was great. They moved me to a new room quickly when the air conditioner in my original room failed. Price per night was pretty low but they still offered free breakfast for two people. Very cool. Would recommend if You don't need something super fancy.

I have a conflicted view of Hotel Uno, but I stayed there for several nights & rebooked a room twice when I could have changed hotels, so on balance I'd give the hotel a reasonable pass. I'm traveling on a budget & Uno was reasonably priced for me. I originally booked through Expedia, which I've used quite a bit, and was given a room overlooking the main road, with 2 single beds. The room was functional & the bed sheets, towels etc clean. They provided soap and there were glasses provided. Two power points by the bed, and free wifi. When I wanted to extend my stay a price was listed on Google Maps, but when I asked if I could have another room at that rate they insisted I use 'Expedia'. However, the water from the shower didn't get away & the bathroom floor flooded. And wifi didn't reach that room. I went to the front desk & the young woman there promptly sent a maintenance person to check things. I was also promptly relocated to another room. So full marks to the front desk on that issue. I booked another night with Expedia & no problems. Overall I had 3 sticking points. First, not being able to just go to the front desk & pay the tariff for a room directly. Second, I thought breakfast was very average. Some room tariffs qualify for a free breakfast. I paid 135p for an egg & toast, and coffee. The egg was, in my opinion, average. Three slices of toasted bread sliced corner to corner & some scrapings of butter. My review must end here because of character limits.

There was no refrigerator, which is a must in your climate. And the the fact that I paid for the highest quality room. The floors in the rooms I stayed in were unclean (room 605 and room 609). The shower bracket in room 605 was installed up-side-down, it looks like it has been like that forever. The water for showering was constantly cold. There was no plug in the hand basin. There was no bed light switch, so one had to get up and go to the entrance door to turn of the lights, to go to sleep, I had a torch to achieve this. The curtains were unclean and stained. Other than above, you are in a great location. If you cleaned up the rooms on the top floor you would be well on the way to giving a better product to your customers. It would cost very little..

If you're looking for a quiet and nice place to stay, this is not the place to be. Location is next to the main road and you can hear the sound of cars and jeepneys. Toilet is expected to be wet, there's no division between the toilet and shower. Building is old. Not recommended for guests who want to stay in the room. Hotel Uno is recommended if you're looking for a place to stay in the city where everything is accessible (7 eleven, jeepneys/taxi (transportation), Ateneo, Roxas). Enjoy your stay in Davao! Don't forget to visit Roxas night market, it's very close to Hotel Uno.

The staff was great. They moved me to a new room quickly when the air conditioner in my original room failed. Price per night was pretty low but they still offered free breakfast for two people. Very cool. Would recommend if You don't need something super fancy.

The internet connection and speed was horrible and unreliable. The air conditioner was old and noisy. There was a broken window that couldn't open. The room felt suffocating and depressing. The cable of the TV had bad connection. The heater of the water doesn't work.

I booked a room for for 900pesos when I added two adults it went to 1,700p. First room they gave us had no toilet seat. Gave us new room. Same type room. Asked for extra bed, they wanted 300p more. Room did not have enough room for a cot anyway. WiFi was useless. I will never go back
