Your Travel Guide to Santa Fe, Bantayan Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Santa Fe, Bantayan Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers planning a trip to Santa Fe, Bantayan Island, reaching this beautiful destination involves a few key steps, primarily involving air and sea travel. From Manila, the most efficient way to get to Bantayan Island is to book flight to either Tagbilaran Airport (TAG) in Bohol or, more commonly, to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) in Cebu.

Flights from Manila to Cebu are frequent and offered by various airlines, with fares typically ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on booking time and airline. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Upon arrival at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), your journey continues overland and then by sea. You will need to take a taxi or a bus to the Cebu North Bus Terminal. This bus ride takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic, and bus fares are generally around PHP 150-200. From the North Bus Terminal, you can catch a bus bound for Hagnaya Port in San Remegio, which is the main jump-off point for ferries to Bantayan Island.

This bus journey takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, with bus tickets costing around PHP 200-300. Alternatively, you can arrange for a private van transfer directly from the airport to Hagnaya Port, which is more convenient but also more expensive, typically ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 4,000.

From Hagnaya Port, you will take a ferry or a fast craft to Santa Fe, Bantayan Island. Ferries are the most common option, with trips taking about 1 to 1.5 hours and costing around PHP 180-250 for a one-way ticket. Fast crafts are quicker but more expensive. It's important to check the ferry schedules in advance, as they can vary, especially during off-peak hours or bad weather.

Once you arrive at the Santa Fe Ferry Terminal, Hoyohoy Villas is just a short tricycle ride away. For travelers coming from other major cities like Davao, the route would involve flying into Cebu first, then following the same steps as outlined from Manila.

Best Time to Visit Santa Fe, Bantayan Island

The climate in Santa Fe, Bantayan Island, is tropical, characterized by warm temperatures year-round. The island experiences two main seasons: a dry season and a wet season. The dry season, generally from December to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, lower humidity, and calmer seas, making it ideal for beach activities, island hopping, and exploring the island's natural beauty. The weather is consistently pleasant, with average temperatures hovering around 28-30°C.

This period attracts the largest crowds, so expect more people at popular spots and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season typically runs from June to November. While this period is characterized by rainfall, it doesn't mean constant downpours. Often, the rain comes in short, heavy bursts, usually in the afternoon or evening, leaving the rest of the day clear and sunny. The advantage of visiting during the wet season is that there are fewer tourists, leading to a more relaxed atmosphere and often lower prices for flights and accommodation.

This can be a great time for budget-conscious travelers or those who prefer a quieter island experience. However, it's always wise to check weather forecasts before and during your trip, as typhoons can occasionally affect the region during this season.

For most Filipino travelers seeking a fitting choice for Bantayan Island experience with reliable beach weather, the dry season from December to May is the recommended period. Specifically, the months of January to April often offer the most stable and pleasant weather conditions.

If you prefer a more tranquil visit and don't mind the possibility of occasional rain showers, the shoulder months of the wet season, such as June or November, can also offer a good balance of decent weather and fewer crowds. Ultimately, the "best" time depends on your priorities, whether it's guaranteed sunshine, fewer people, or better value for money.

Many local restaurants grill their seafood over charcoal, imparting a smoky flavor that complements the natural sweetness of the fish.

Often served with a side of soy sauce, calamansi, and chili, or a simple garlic butter sauce, grilled seafood is a simple yet profoundly satisfying dish. Many beachfront eateries offer this, allowing you to dine with a view of the ocean.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is a classic Filipino dessert that you’ll find readily available. While it's a nationwide favorite, enjoying it on a tropical island like Bantayan adds a special touch. This shaved ice dessert is a delightful concoction of sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, ube halaya, and topped with milk and ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down and indulge after a day of sun and sea.

You can find vendors and small eateries serving Halo-Halo, each with their own slight variations, making it a fun treat to try from different places.

Don't leave Bantayan Island without trying the Dried Mangoes, even though Cebu is more famous for them, you can find good quality ones here too. While not a dish, these sweet and chewy treats are a popular pasalubong (souvenir) and a delightful snack. They offer a taste of the Philippines that you can easily take home. Look for reputable shops to ensure you get the best quality.

For a more substantial meal, try the Pork Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that is a staple in Filipino households. The tamarind-based broth, filled with tender pork and fresh vegetables like kangkong and radish, is comforting and delicious. Many local carinderias (eateries) serve this, offering an authentic taste of home-style Filipino cooking.

The staff were great and very attentive. We really enjoyed the pool. The location was very convenient, and easy walk to the main centre of town.

It’s truly a paradise here. More than I ever expected the experience to be. Nice staff, excellent food and a very quiet atmosphere. Rooms were amazing and has hot running water for bathing or showering. Sea is very close and has beautiful beaches.

The place was the worst place ive been to in 20 Years. It looked abandoned. No water for hours . A/C didn't cool the villa. No food or drink available even though charged for same. The pool was an algea color green. The grounds nor the beach were sweep. After we got our key the only staff lady left We left the next morning. The property looked abandoned in the morning. We arrived about 8 pm. Even then it looked scary. Worse in tbe light. It should not be on any travel service. A refund was refused even after all the complaints The one lady that took our key when we left said she understood our reasons for leaving

The property is well thought out and designed. Just that some glass panels have spaces for bugs to get in. The staff was marvelous and very accommodating. The air conditioning unit was plenty strong in our room and comfortable. The beach is too close to the Ferry landing and debris from it is frequent along the beach. It was secluded and you have very good privacy. Some re touching and remodeling will make it shine again, for this I am sure.

Air conditioner didnt cool the room. The room was full of mosquitoes, . The pool had not been cleaned. The grounds needed landscaping. There was trash down by the beach. The water was not accessible from the property, so really no private beach as advertised. They swept the road, but left trash everywhere else on the property.

In a word... Neglected. The facility as a whole is in much need of repair. Not just the thatched roofs of the villas, but the wood rot on the eves as well as much of concrete that has broken away from the rusting rebar. The staff was courteous and location was quiet. The entrance to the resort is not clearly marked so is easy to miss. Swimming pool is small, easy to mistake as a koi fish pond. Wi-Fi only accessible outside on grounds or lower level of the villa, not inside the villa. Villa appeared clean, though still managed to contract HFM Disease, had to cut our stay short because of needing medical attention on mainland. Resort refused to reimburse/refund for unused days. In the end, a not so romantic, romantic retreat. Will not be returning.

The resort is nice and secluded. It is within walking distance from the ferry and the the town if you chose. The property is well maintained and the lodges are spacious and comfortable. Some items could be upgraded but overall, the next time I go to Bantayan I will once more stay at Hoyohoy Villias.

Very relaxing and and has big open spaces. Not a lot of people walking by the beach which makes the area relaxing. Only downside I saw that its 5 minutes by car to Santa Fe center where the good restaurants are.
