Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers heading to Baguio City, the journey typically begins in Manila. From the bustling terminals in Cubao or Pasay, numerous bus companies like Victory Liner, Genesis Transport, and Partas offer direct routes to Baguio. These buses are a popular choice for their affordability and frequency. A one-way ticket usually costs between PHP 800 to PHP 1,200, and the trip takes approximately 6 to 8 hours, depending on traffic and the number of stops.

For those who prefer to fly, the closest airport with regular commercial flights is Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga. From CRK, you can take a direct bus or van service to Baguio, which can sometimes be quicker than traveling from Manila. Alternatively, you can fly into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila and then proceed to the bus terminals. Booking a book flight to either NAIA or CRK is the first step for air travel.

If you're coming from Cebu or Davao, flying is generally the most practical option. You would book a flight to either NAIA or Clark International Airport and then connect to a bus service bound for Baguio. Direct flights to Baguio's Loakan Airport (BAG) are infrequent and usually limited to smaller aircraft or charter services. The combined travel time, including the flight to Manila or Clark and the subsequent bus journey, will be significantly longer than starting from Luzon.

For instance, a flight from Cebu to Manila is about 1 hour and 15 minutes, followed by the 6-8 hour bus ride to Baguio. Driving your own vehicle is also an option, especially from nearby provinces in Luzon. Major highways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) connect to routes leading to Baguio, such as Marcos Highway or Kennon Road.

The drive from Metro Manila typically takes 4 to 6 hours, with toll fees adding to the overall cost.

The choice of transport often depends on your budget, time constraints, and origin city. Buses offer a cost-effective way to reach Baguio, especially for groups or families traveling together. Driving provides the most flexibility, allowing you to stop along the way and explore other scenic spots in Northern Luzon. For those prioritizing speed and comfort, flying to Clark and then taking a bus or van is a good compromise.

Regardless of your chosen method, planning your journey in advance, especially during peak seasons, is highly recommended to secure the best fares and ensure a smooth trip to the cool city of Baguio.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a generally cool climate year-round, a welcome respite from the tropical heat of most of the Philippines. The coolest months are from December to February, with temperatures sometimes dropping to as low as 10-15 degrees Celsius, especially during the early morning and late evening. This period is considered peak season, particularly around Christmas and New Year, when the city is adorned with festive decorations and attracts a large number of visitors.

The weather is generally dry and pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. However, expect larger crowds and higher accommodation prices during this time.

The months from March to May mark the warmer season in Baguio, though "warm" is relative, and it remains significantly cooler than the lowlands. This period also sees a surge in visitors, especially during the Holy Week and summer breaks. The Panagbenga Festival, celebrated every February, is another major draw, transforming the city into a spectacle of flowers and parades.

For travelers who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and fewer crowds, the months of June to November offer a different experience. This is the rainy season, and while Baguio can experience heavy downpours, the rain often comes in intermittent bursts, leaving plenty of time for sightseeing. The landscape becomes lush and green, and accommodation prices tend to be lower.

Visiting during the shoulder months, like late May or early June, or late November, can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

For a truly authentic Baguio experience, consider visiting during the cooler, drier months from November to May. This period aligns with the city's most popular festivals and offers the most comfortable weather for exploring. However, if you are a traveler who values tranquility and budget-friendliness, the rainy season from June to October might be more appealing. The city takes on a different charm during this time, with mist often shrouding the hills and a more intimate feel to its attractions.

Whichever season you choose, Baguio City offers a unique highland experience that is distinct from the rest of the Philippines.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City's culinary scene is a delightful fusion of highland flavors and Filipino favorites, offering a unique gastronomic journey for every visitor. One dish that stands out is the **Sinigang na Baboy** or **Sinigang na Baka**, but in Baguio, it often has a distinct sourness from local ingredients like kamias or even a touch of strawberry, giving it a unique regional twist. You'll find excellent versions in local eateries and restaurants scattered throughout the city.

The cool weather makes a steaming bowl of sinigang particularly comforting.

Another must-try is **Pinikpikan**, a traditional Cordilleran dish. It involves a unique preparation method where a chicken is lightly beaten with a stick before cooking, supposedly to tenderize the meat and enhance its flavor. The resulting stew, often cooked with etag (smoked pork), is rich and savory. While the preparation might sound unusual, the taste is deeply satisfying and offers a genuine glimpse into the indigenous culinary heritage of the region. Many local carinderias and specialty restaurants serve this dish.

For those with a sweet tooth, **Strawberry Taho** is an absolute delight. While taho is a common Filipino snack, Baguio's version is elevated with fresh, locally grown strawberries. The warm, silken tofu, combined with the sweet arnibal and chewy sago pearls, is topped with a generous serving of fresh strawberries, creating a delightful contrast of temperatures and flavors. You'll find vendors selling this refreshing treat throughout the city, especially near tourist spots.

Don't leave Baguio without trying **Ube Jam** and **Peanut Brittle** from the Good Shepherd Convent. These are iconic Baguio pasalubong items that have gained nationwide popularity. The ube jam is creamy and rich, made from purple yams, while the peanut brittle offers a satisfying crunch and nutty flavor. These are perfect for sharing with family and friends back home, serving as delicious edible souvenirs of your trip.

Exploring the local markets and smaller shops can also lead you to discover other regional delicacies like smoked meats and various fruit preserves.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly and generally respectful local culture. The people of Baguio, often referred to as Igorots, have a rich heritage rooted in the Cordillera Administrative Region. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to greet elders with respect. While Baguio is a progressive city, traditional values are still held in high regard. Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas or during late hours.

When visiting religious sites or the Good Shepherd Convent, dress modestly out of respect.

Safety in Baguio City is generally good, but like any urban area, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of petty theft, particularly in crowded tourist spots or public transportation. If you encounter any issues, the local police can be reached at their emergency hotline.

It's also advisable to have the contact numbers of your hotel and any local friends or acquaintances readily available. Walking around Baguio is common, but be aware of traffic, especially on busy roads.

For essential apps, consider downloading ride-hailing apps like Grab, which operates in Baguio for convenient transportation. Navigation apps such as Google Maps are invaluable for finding your way around the city and locating attractions and restaurants. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by Filipinos. If you're interested in local events or promotions, checking the Traveloka app for activities and dining deals can also be very useful.

Having these apps on your smartphone will enhance your travel experience, making it easier to navigate, communicate, and discover the best of Baguio.

We stayed at the hotel Dec 26-28, 2017. The stay was fine. Nothing extreme happens. I mean everything is normal. Nothing bad and nothing more than what we are expecting. Although when it comes to cleanliness, I'm gonna give 8/10. The room smells like an old wooden cabinet. At first, there's no doormat which is very important when you came out of the bathroom but at least on the second day they provide one after their daily room cleaning. No slippers too, not sure if we need to request for it but not a big deal since we really stayed there when it's already bed time. Staff are okay. Breakfast is okay but will not recommend for long time stay because of the limited menu.
