Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach El Nido from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights to El Nido Airport (ENI) are available, with fares typically ranging from PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. The flight duration is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. You can easily book flight tickets through Traveloka for competitive prices.

Alternatively, you can fly into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), which often has more frequent and cheaper flights. From Puerto Princesa, you can take a van or bus to El Nido. This journey takes about 5 to 6 hours and typically costs between PHP 500 to PHP 800 for a one-way ticket. While longer, this option is more budget-friendly for those looking for a cheap hotel experience.

For the adventurous traveler, driving to El Nido is possible, though it's a very long journey, especially from Manila. The route involves driving through various parts of Luzon and then taking a ferry or driving down to Palawan. This option is best suited for those who want to explore the Philippines by road and have ample time. The total travel time can exceed 24 hours, and costs will vary significantly based on fuel, accommodation, and ferry fees.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit El Nido. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with minimal rainfall, making it ideal for island-hopping tours, swimming, and other outdoor activities. The seas are usually calmer, offering better conditions for boat trips to the famous lagoons and beaches.

Peak season falls between December and April, when the weather is at its finest. However, this also means higher prices for flights and accommodation, and more crowds at popular spots. For a balance of good weather and fewer tourists, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or May. The wet season, from June to October, can bring rain and rougher seas, which might disrupt tour schedules, though you can often find better deals during this period.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Filipino cuisine is diverse and delicious, and El Nido offers a chance to savor local flavors. One dish you must try is fresh grilled seafood. Given its coastal location, El Nido boasts an abundance of freshly caught fish, squid, and prawns, often grilled to perfection and served with soy sauce, calamansi, and chili. Many beachfront eateries offer this simple yet satisfying meal.

Another local favorite is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili, creating a tangy and refreshing appetizer. It’s a perfect dish to enjoy on a hot day, offering a burst of flavor that complements the tropical setting. Look for it in local carinderias or restaurants.

Don't leave El Nido without trying La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular nationwide. This rich broth filled with pork, offal, and crispy garlic is a comforting meal, especially if you've had a long day of travel or exploring. It’s a taste of home that many Filipinos appreciate when traveling.

For a sweet treat, try Halo-Halo, a fitting choice for Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream is a delightful way to cool down. It’s widely available in most eateries and is a perfect end to any meal.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and El Nido is no exception. A common local custom is "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority, showing respect. Always greet locals with a smile, and be mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. While El Nido is generally safe, it's wise to be aware of your belongings.

For safety, it's advisable to drink bottled water and be cautious with street food if you have a sensitive stomach. Keep your valuables secure, especially when on crowded tours or in public transport. In case of emergencies, local police can be contacted, and it's good to have their numbers handy. Familiarize yourself with the local currency, the Philippine Peso (PHP).

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for finding your way around. Nothing’s unique in this hotel. Bed is good, clean and comfortable; breakfast is a buffet which is also good same as the other hotels. The only thing that i don’t like is when we are going to our island hopping tour. The front desk staff told as a day before that we will leave the hotel at 8:30am. The next day at 8:30 we are at the front desk and the staff told us “ma’am, since there are only 2 of you who are going, you will take the tricycle to the port”. I was shocked, since I paid for the trip including the van ride to the port. I asked if she can arrange for a van, but she kept on saying no, you will take the tryc. As if to appease me, she said, no worries ma’am, you don’t need to pay for the fare, we’ll take care of that. I understand that they are the employee and they are just following the hotel’s policy, but at least she should try to solve the issue. But no, she went to the easiest way out. For the amount I paid for the tour, it’s not fair and not worth it. There are still other things that I noticed about the hotel but I this is just me, the price of the hotel is not worth my money…I will not recommend this hotel to my friends or to anybody.
