J7 plaza hotel was amazingly nice. We enjoyed everything it offered, from courteous staff willing to help, the beautiful infinity pool on top with city view, and the free breakfast was superb. The restaurant servers were very polite and helpful. The front desk reps were very accommodating, and a beautiful artistic lobby was neat. The hotel was close to shopping places, like the Mega Mall, restaurants & walking distance to FUNDADOR museum was a plus. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone.

Your Travel Guide to Iloilo City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Iloilo City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Iloilo City from Manila is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Iloilo International Airport. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options can often be found for as low as PHP 2,000 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip if booked in advance.

For travelers preferring a more economical, albeit longer, journey, bus travel is an option. Buses depart from various terminals in Metro Manila, such as Cubao and Pasay, heading to Iloilo City. This trip usually involves a ferry crossing from Luzon to Panay Island. The total travel time can range from 18 to 24 hours, with fares typically falling between PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500 for a one-way ticket, depending on the bus company and service class.

Driving to Iloilo City is also possible for those who enjoy road trips. The journey from Manila involves navigating major highways and potentially taking a ferry. The total distance is substantial, and the travel time can exceed 20 hours. Toll fees will add to the overall cost of the trip. This option is best suited for groups or families who prefer the flexibility of having their own vehicle throughout their journey.

Best Time to Visit Iloilo City

Iloilo City enjoys a tropical climate, with generally warm temperatures year-round. The dry season, typically from November to April, is considered the most pleasant time to visit. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring historical sites, and enjoying the city's festivals. The period between December and February often offers the most comfortable weather.

The wet season runs from May to October, characterized by higher rainfall, particularly in the afternoons. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it's advisable to pack an umbrella and be prepared for occasional downpours. Despite the rain, Iloilo City remains accessible, and many indoor attractions and dining experiences are unaffected. The city also celebrates its major festivals, like the Dinagyang Festival in January, which is a peak season for tourism.

Food and Dining Near Iloilo City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Iloilo is renowned as the "Food Capital of the Philippines," and a visit is incomplete without sampling its culinary delights. A must-try is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork, offal, and shrimp. The rich, savory broth is a signature of Iloilo, and you can find authentic versions in local eateries and markets. It’s a comforting and flavorful dish that truly represents Ilonggo cuisine.

Another local specialty is KBL, which stands for Kadyos, Baboy, and Langka. This is a flavorful stew made with pigeon peas, pork, and young jackfruit, simmered in a savory broth. The unique combination of ingredients creates a distinct taste that many locals and visitors rave about. It’s a dish that showcases the region's agricultural bounty and culinary creativity.

Don't leave Iloilo without trying their Pancit Molo. Unlike other pancit dishes, this is a wonton soup filled with ground pork and shrimp, served in a flavorful broth. The delicate dumplings and savory soup make it a delightful and satisfying meal, perfect for any time of the day. It’s evidence of the refined flavors found in Ilonggo cooking.

For seafood lovers, Iloilo offers an abundance of fresh catches. Grilled fish, oysters, and various shellfish are readily available in local restaurants and markets. Enjoying these fresh from the sea, often prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors, is a characteristic Ilonggo dining experience. Many restaurants along the coast or in the city center offer excellent seafood dishes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Iloilo City

Ilonggos are known for their hospitality and gentle demeanor. A common greeting is "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you). It's polite to use these phrases when interacting with locals. Respect for elders and public spaces is highly valued. When visiting churches or other religious sites, dress modestly out of respect.

Iloilo City is generally considered a safe place for travelers. However, like any urban area, it's wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or public transport. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your hotel readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city and finding your way to attractions and restaurants. Ride-hailing apps or local transport apps can be useful for booking taxis or tricycles. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by Filipinos.

Learning a few basic Hiligaynon phrases can also be helpful and appreciated by locals. While English and Tagalog are widely understood, attempting the local dialect shows respect and can lead to more engaging interactions. Familiarizing yourself with the local customs and having these practical tools at your disposal will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable trip to Iloilo City.

It was very hot throughout the hotel and they only provide one key to the room which you also need to turn on the power. All the other hotels I’ve been to have provided at least two keys if one is needed to power the room. Whenever you have to leave you have to turn off the A/C to your room and it will become extremely hot.

Stayed here in 2 separate dates back in january. Location was great for me due to close close proximity to where i used to live. Staff were friendly and helpful. But rooms are too small, management needs to invest on new towels. Toilets are a pain, always does not work properly. shower floors was slippery. Beds were stiff. Pool on the top floor was a plus, negative thing about is there is no one up there during the day if you need assistance and no phone to call front desk. on my first stay my door did not have a key card (stayed for 5 days) and they did not have it fixed. My second stay ( 3 days) the AC took a long time to get cool and bathroom was too small. Overall it was an "ok" stay.

This was a night out of a horror movie. All was well until bedtime. Then the people in the room next to us decided to have an all night fight. They were slamming doors and turning over furniture. At 11 pm i notified the front desk we could not sleep. The front desk apparently did nothing because at 3am we still couldn't sleep so i called again. This time they sent security i guess because it finally stopped. We got maybe 3 hours sleep and in the morning the front desk apologized. I think the hotel owes us a free nights stay along with the apology.

From the time that we arrived in the hotel it felt like we had to call the front desk to report issues a lot of times. Sink with drain closed off, not enough tissue roll, no foot towel in the bathroom, etc. Why can’t the cleaner just provide everything we need instead of having to call (and of course tip them when they come and provide what we need) over and over? The hotel is really beautiful, very convenient, close to everything, nice pool and bar at the roof deck, the rooms are beautiful, decent buffet breakfast, awesome dining area. can’t complain. BUT the quality of their bath tissue paper isn’t good. It disintegrates so easily. It’s like you are in a one-star hotel. And also maybe train the staffs/cleaners to make sure the guests have everything they need in the room? Thanks.

Clean hotel. Friendly staff. Housekeeping response to concerns we addressed immediately. Found it a bit strange tho to have pancit molo, pork estofado and halo halo for buffet breakfast menu. Our room had no hot water the first night and by the 2nd night we had requested to transfer rooms. Initially we were given a much small room with a terrible view. We had to demand same sized room as what we had first before they moved me to one. Why they did not do that in first place is quite annoying - we felt we were being short changed when in fact there was an available room

The location was not the greatest as it is next door to a squatter area. However, it is not far from the Megaworld Shopping Complex and a supermarket. The dining staff service was also inconsistent. The first breakfast was excellent and the second day was sub-standard. The bathroom was also a bit weird. When you shower, everything gets wet as there is no shower curtains or bath enclosure. Other than that, the hotel is only 7 months old so it has a new hotel feel.

Thanks.
