Your Travel Guide to Coron as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Coron from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For many Filipino travelers, the journey to Coron begins in Manila, the country's bustling capital. The most efficient way to reach Coron is by air. Several airlines operate flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila to Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) in Busuanga, Palawan. Flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for around PHP 3,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip if booked in advance. To secure the best prices and schedules, it's advisable to book flight tickets through platforms like Traveloka.

From the airport, you'll take a van transfer to Coron Town Proper, which takes about 45 minutes to an hour and costs around PHP 150-250 per person.

Travelers coming from Cebu City have similar options. Direct flights from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) to Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) are available, though they might be less frequent than those from Manila. The flight time is comparable, around 1 hour and 20 minutes. If direct flights are not available or are too expensive, connecting flights through Manila are a common alternative.

For those in Mindanao, particularly Davao City, flying via Manila is usually the most practical route, as direct flights to Coron are rare. The total travel time, including layovers, will be longer, so planning and booking well in advance are crucial.

While flying is the most practical method, it's worth noting that there are no direct ferry services from major Philippine cities like Manila or Cebu to Coron. The closest you might get to a sea voyage is by taking a ferry to Puerto Princesa or El Nido and then arranging onward travel, but this is a significantly longer and more complex journey. For most travelers, especially those on a tighter schedule, flying directly to Coron is the recommended approach.

The ease of booking flights and the relatively short travel time make it the most accessible option for experiencing the wonders of Palawan.

Best Time to Visit Coron

Coron, Palawan, experiences a tropical climate, with distinct seasons that influence the travel experience. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking sunny skies and calm seas is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to May. Within this period, the months of December to April are often considered prime time due to consistently clear weather, making them ideal for island hopping, diving, and snorkeling.

The seas are typically calmer, offering excellent visibility for underwater activities and smoother boat rides to popular spots like Kayangan Lake and Barracuda Lake.

The shoulder months, such as November and May, can also be excellent times to visit. You might encounter slightly fewer crowds compared to the peak months of December to March, and the weather is usually still very favorable. Traveling during the dry season means you can expect warm temperatures, so packing light clothing, swimwear, and sun protection is essential.

While the weather is generally reliable, occasional rain showers can occur even during this period, but they are usually brief and do not significantly disrupt travel plans.

The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rainfall and occasional typhoons. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, travel plans can be more susceptible to disruption due to weather conditions. Boat trips might be canceled or rerouted for safety reasons. However, for the adventurous traveler who doesn't mind the possibility of rain and seeks a more tranquil experience with fewer crowds, the wet season can still offer its own charm.

The landscape appears lusher, and you might find more opportunities for spontaneous exploration. Ultimately, the choice depends on your priorities: guaranteed sunshine and calm seas during the dry season, or a potentially more laid-back and budget-friendly trip during the wet season.

We booked the place for three nights, only got a refund for one night. We were referred by family friends to stay at this place but when we got to our “grand” room (for 6) it was the opposite of grand. The cooling unit was terribly slow and the inconvenience of taking the stairs with luggages and kids was horrifying. We came during non-peak season so it was hard to believe that there are no vacant rooms in the first floor. Would not highly recommend the place, we left and booked another hotel in the same day. Not a great experience for first timers in Coron, Palawan.

Enjoyed our stay, staff was awesome and friendly and accommodating. Very helpful. Everything was nearby and walkable. The AC was very loud and hard to sleep. It took a while for the room to get cold. There were lots of ants but otherwise the room was acceptable

Great location, spacious room for the cost. Water pressure in the shower in average but to be expected at cheap costing room. Would stay here again though, on cost and location.

Clean place, lacks water pressure though, may be a common issue though. Had a problem with toilet and maintenance was there in 5 minutes and took care of it. If you want to stay downtown this is the place, nightclub around corner plenty of places to eat and shop within couple blocks. Television, AC and fan worked great. If you are going to want a big breakfast and layout by a pool then look for somewhere else, no pool and a huge breakfast is hard to come by unless you stay at larger resort. Tours leave at 8:00 so town and restaurants open later and no buffet that we found except Two seasons.

Keep in mind that there is LITERALLY NOTHING to do in Coron town aside from the island-hopping tours and hiking Mount Tapyas. There are no beaches, no shopping, no nothing. I personally recommend only staying for each island tour and a day of hiking, and leaving. Unfortunately I did not know this and was bored with nothing to do for a few days. Aside from that, Jazmine's Place was very nice. I had arranged a pick-up van from the airport via email which was 150 pesos and was waiting for me upon arrival which was great. The room is very nice, with decent air conditioning and a fan. I also had a small flatscreen TV with a few English stations which was great. You have a few options for breakfast which they come to your door the night before and ask you to choose from a list. I don't eat fish, so there are options like chicken hot dog and a dish called tocino which is almost like thick candied bacon - and it's DELICIOUS! All breakfast items are served with plain white rice and a fried egg. There's also water and instant coffee available. Sunshine at the front desk was wonderful and arranged all my tours for me. I recommend tours A and C, those were my favorite. You can also book the ferry to El Nido from there, but I personally would book it directly at the Montenegro office (if you're booking the express) because the cost is 1750 pesos and I paid 2000 because I was told there was a "booking fee", and nobody else on the boat had to pay that so that was a bit upsetting.
