Your Travel Guide to Davao City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Davao City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to travel to Davao City from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate regular flights to Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but you can often find round-trip tickets for as low as PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 if you book flight tickets strategically.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby Mindanao cities, bus services are available. Buses from cities like Cagayan de Oro or General Santos City to Davao City are common. The journey can be quite long, often taking between 6 to 10 hours, depending on the origin city and road conditions. Bus fares are considerably cheaper than flights, typically ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 for a one-way trip.

Driving to Davao City is also an option, especially for those embarking on a road trip across Mindanao. The Pan-Philippine Highway connects Davao City to various parts of Luzon and other islands, though this is a very extensive journey. For those within Mindanao, well-maintained roads lead to the city. Be prepared for long driving hours and potential toll fees along the way. Planning your route and stops is essential for a comfortable road trip.

Best Time to Visit Davao City

Davao City enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with temperatures generally ranging from 25°C to 32°C. The city does not experience a distinct dry or wet season in the same way as some other parts of the Philippines, as it is located outside the typhoon belt. However, there is a slightly wetter period from June to October. For the most pleasant weather, consider visiting during the months of March to May, when the climate is typically drier and less humid.

The Kadayawan Festival, celebrated every third week of August, is a major highlight and a peak season for tourism. If you wish to experience this grand celebration of Davao's indigenous cultures and bountiful harvest, plan your visit accordingly. However, be aware that accommodation prices may be higher, and attractions can be more crowded during this period. For a more relaxed and budget-friendly trip, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as February or November, when the weather is still favorable.

Food and Dining Near Davao City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Davao City, you absolutely must try Kinilaw na Malasugi, a local take on ceviche using fresh marlin or tuna. Unlike other versions, Davao's kinilaw often features a generous amount of ginger, onions, and chili, giving it a zesty and slightly spicy kick. You can find excellent versions of this dish in local seafood restaurants and carinderias, offering a true taste of Mindanao's coastal flavors.

Another local delicacy that deserves a spot on your must-try list is the Durian. Davao is famously known as the "Durian Capital of the Philippines." While its pungent aroma is notorious, its creamy texture and unique sweet-bitter taste are an acquired pleasure for many. Sample it fresh from street vendors or in local markets, especially during its peak season from August to October. Be adventurous and give it a try!

For a hearty and flavorful meal, seek out Sinuglaw. This dish is a delicious fusion of "sinugba" (grilled pork) and "kinilaw" (raw fish marinated in vinegar). The smoky flavor of the grilled pork combined with the tangy, spicy marinade of the kinilaw creates a complex and satisfying taste profile. Many local eateries and restaurants serve this popular Mindanaoan specialty.

Don't leave Davao without trying the local version of La Paz Batchoy. While originating from Iloilo, Davao's rendition often incorporates local ingredients and flavors. This hearty noodle soup, typically made with pork, pork offal, and shrimp, is a comforting and filling meal, perfect for any time of day. Look for it in local eateries for an authentic taste of Filipino comfort food.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Davao City

Davao City is known for its generally peaceful environment and strong community spirit. Locals are often friendly and welcoming. When interacting, a polite demeanor and respectful attitude go a long way. While Davao is considered one of the safest cities in the Philippines, it's always wise to remain aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Avoid displaying excessive wealth and be cautious when walking alone at night in unfamiliar districts.

For emergencies, the local emergency hotline is typically 911, which is standard across many Philippine cities. It's also advisable to have the contact numbers of your hotel and the local police station readily available. Familiarize yourself with the general layout of the areas you plan to visit. Understanding basic Filipino phrases can also enhance your interactions and show respect for the local culture.

To navigate Davao City efficiently, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable ride-hailing app like Grab is invaluable for transportation, allowing you to book cars and track your journey. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, helping you find your way to attractions and restaurants. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Having a local SIM card can also be beneficial for data access and local calls.

Some of the staff were not that knowledgable of what their doing. We were given a different room when we arrived and they were fullybooked that time. Got a bit disappointed but we were transfered the next day. Nevertheless, some staff were very accommodating. Toilets need improvements specially the shower area.

First time staying in Jotel inn and once you step in the hotel you felt pleasant. During check in or check out is smooth. Front desk staff are very polite, friendly and very patience explain everything very clear. Room surrounding is okey quite clean and tidy but just only to improve on laundering bed sheet and pillows cover as has a kind a bad smell and bathroom surrounding is clean but only just the shower set that kind of old as water doesn't spray much but water heater is good enough. Wi-fi maybe need to upgrade as a little lagging. One thing I like Jotel inn for this kind of standard budget hotel has a restaurant at the ground level and also room service although has a charge of 10% service charges for sending up the food to the room but that is alright to me cause that is part of services. Overall still acceptable. I would love to come back to stay Jotel inn next time. Highly recommended!

Room was clean, staff were accommodating. They were very responsive to our concerns. We stayed at 3rd floor. During our stay, there was one simple concern, noise from the water drops of ac from the upper floor and we told to the front desk. They immediately sent their technicians to check and repair the leak. Convenience wise, this hotel is very good for travelers who find comfort. It is also near to various places like night market, our favorite place to eat our dinner. For only 8 pesos riding a jeep, you can reach the night market or you can take a taxi to and from that will range from 44 to 50 pesos per way depending on the traffic. There is a supermarket at the back of the hotel, on the right side there is a restaurant names penongs, I think this resto is famous in davao city since we have seen more of it during our tour in davao. Food there is also delicious. Move some steps away, there is a carinderia if you're on a budget. The hotel also offer a buffet breakfast for only 110. This hotel is suit because of their low room rate with good quality service.

Room was enough for two - not very spacious yet not too tight also. Bed was comfy & the bathroom was sparkling clean. Staff was very accommodating. They had limit parking space though.

The room was clean. Location was everything as almost all the places we went to, there's already a jeepney or suv that passes by the hotel. Customer service was good. When we complained about the aircon of our first room, they have transferred us to another immediately.

Toiletries aren't complete we have to request toilet paper, from the FO, the shower is damage. There are no electric plug on bedside and some of the plugs available are not functioning, the room service for food we have to wait almost an hour before your food will be delivered. Other than that the hotel was clean.

Very affordable place. Mejo is noisy in the morning because of coconstruction by the side. But all in all it was great.

Room is clean and smells good; the hallways as well. 10-15min walk to Gaisano mall, Aldevinco, Roxas Night Market, and People’s Park! There’s also a Penong’s restaurant beside it. Location is superb!

The room was nice and clean although it was a little small. Not bad for 2 people staying in one room.

I was expecting a big bed for a double room. But instead, it was two single beds. Other than that, our stay was good! 😊
