We stayed at Kokomo for a week and were really pleased with our cottage with a wrap-around porch by the ocean. The landscaping and gardens in the resort are lush and beautiful. Our room was air-conditioned, had free wifi, with lots of hot water in the shower. Every morning we had breakfast included, which was cooked to order. Visitors could easily sign up for a snorkelling or dive expedition at the property, which has its own boat. If you are looking for a smaller resort with a boho vibe, this is the place.

Your Travel Guide to Mambajao as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Mambajao from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Mambajao, Camiguin from Manila typically involves a combination of air and sea travel for the most efficient route. The quickest way is to book flight directly to Camiguin Airport (CGM). Flight prices can vary, but budget-friendly options can often be found if booked in advance, with fares potentially ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and airline.

Alternatively, you can fly from Manila to Cagayan de Oro City (CDO), which has more frequent flights and often lower fares, typically between PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000. From CDO, you would then take a bus or van to the Balingoan Port (approximately a 2-3 hour journey, costing around PHP 150-250). From Balingoan, a ferry or RORO vessel will take you to Benoni Port in Camiguin (about a 1.5-2 hour trip, costing around PHP 200-300). From Benoni Port, Mambajao is a short tricycle or multicab ride away.

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Davao, similar options exist. Flights to Cagayan de Oro are common, or direct flights to Camiguin might be available. The journey via Balingoan Port remains a popular and cost-effective method for reaching Camiguin Island. Planning your travel in advance, especially during peak seasons, is recommended to secure the best fares and schedules.

Best Time to Visit Mambajao

Camiguin Island, including Mambajao, generally experiences a tropical climate with two main seasons: a dry season and a wet season. The dry season, typically from March to May, offers the most favorable weather for outdoor activities, with sunny skies and lower chances of rain. This period is considered peak season, so expect more crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season runs from June to February, with rainfall being more frequent, especially from November to January. However, even during the wet season, rain showers are often intermittent, and you can still enjoy many of the island's attractions. The shoulder months, such as June or October, can offer a good balance of decent weather and fewer tourists, making them attractive for budget-conscious travelers.

For those interested in specific events, the Lanzones Festival, usually held in October, is a major highlight. If you plan to visit during this time, book your accommodation and transport well in advance. Overall, the period from March to May is ideal for beach activities and exploring the island's natural beauty, while the rest of the year offers a more laid-back experience with a higher chance of rain.

Food and Dining Near Mambajao — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Camiguin Island offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects its local produce and Filipino flavors. One of the must-try local delicacies is the Lanzones fruit itself, especially when in season (typically around October). This sweet and tangy fruit is a specialty of the island, and you'll find it sold in abundance during its harvest.

Another local favorite is the Pastel de Leche, a soft, sweet pastry filled with creamy custard. These are perfect for a snack or dessert and are widely available in local bakeries and pasalubong centers. They are a delightful treat that captures the sweet essence of Filipino baking.

For seafood lovers, Camiguin offers fresh catches daily. You can find various preparations of fish, squid, and other marine delights in local eateries and restaurants. Grilled fish, kinilaw (Filipino ceviche), and sinigang (sour soup) are common and delicious options. Don't forget to try the local version of La Paz Batchoy or other noodle soups for a hearty meal.

Finally, Camiguin is also known for its unique dishes like the Camiguin White Island Shrimp. While specific restaurants might vary, seeking out local carinderias or small eateries will often lead you to authentic and delicious meals that showcase the island's culinary heritage. Exploring these local flavors is a significant part of the travel experience for many Filipino visitors.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Mambajao

Camiguin Island is known for its friendly and hospitable people. The local culture is deeply rooted in Filipino traditions, with a strong sense of community. When interacting with locals, politeness and respect are highly valued. Learning a few basic Tagalog or Visayan phrases can go a long way in fostering positive interactions.

Safety is generally not a major concern in Camiguin, as it is considered one of the safer destinations in the Philippines. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions: be aware of your surroundings, secure your valuables, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, local police and medical services are available, and it's good to have their contact numbers handy.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around the island. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used. If you plan to book local tours or transport on the go, having the Traveloka app installed will be beneficial for managing your bookings and discovering new attractions.

Quiete place, except some guests are shouting in the middle of the night in the swimming pole. The most funny part is, they have two dogs that greet the guest with their loud,,,aw, aw, aw,. Although the dogs are friendly but their bites are no jokes, a greeter dog is not good for business,,,,,aw, aw, aw. The owners are two foreigners, with foreigners look, that can actually speaks the local dialects,,,,hehehehehe. The local helpers are nice enough to give us some places to go.Swimming pole is dirty but owner cleaned it the next day. We are resting and all of the sudden we hear a machine for grass cutter, so loud and anoing. Over all they can improve on customer service using human as a greeter and not animals.
